For this activity you will need a stack of papers that are the same size, three staples, a ruler, a pencil, a needle or push pin, a heavy book, a pair of scissors (optional), an exacto knife (optional), and a cutting mat (optional).
Fold papers in half across the long side. Line the creases of the paper up against each other. Clip the short sides of the papers together. Take a single unfolded staple and line it up against the seam 1½ inches from the edge. Mark where the points of the staple hit on the seam with a pencil. Line the staple 1½ inches from the other side of the seam and mark the points. Do that one more time in between the other marks. It should be about 1½ from the other marks. Poke the holes with either a needle or push pin. Unfold three staples and push them through the holes, the points should be inside the seam. Use the eraser of a pencil to fold down the staples. Fold the book and place a heavy book onto it. Keep the book there until the book stays closed while laying flat.
You can stop here and use the book as it is or cut the edges, so that they are even. With the book folded and flat. You can use a pair of scissors to cut the edges straight. Or you can place the book on a cutting mat and place a ruler on the edge of the book. Use an exacto knife to cut the edges straight.
For this activity you will need paper, at most 20 sheets, a cereal box, aluminum stringing wire, a pen, ruler, scissors, small hole puncher, wire cutter, and binder clips.
Cut all your papers in half on the long end. Take one of the papers in portrait orientation and draw a line 2 mm down from the top edge. Using the hole punch, punch holes 2mm apart where the top of the hole meets the line you drew. Repeat that for all the other papers individually or use the binder clips to keep them centered with the punched out paper on top and punch holes on the same spot.
Cut out two pieces of cardboard on the cereal box the same size as the papers. Punch the holes into the cardboard pieces at the same place as the papers. Stack your cardboard and papers where the cardboard forms a cover and all the holes line up. Binder clip the stack together.
Wrap your wire around your pen making the number of spirals equal to the number of holes in your book. Cut off the excess wire and pull the coiled wire off the pen. Stretch the coils slightly. Starting at one end of the book, twist the coil into the holes until you reach the end. Cut the sticking out ends of the wire.
