French knitting is similar to the rubber band bracelet, but has more pegs. If girls enjoy making bracelets like that, then they’ll enjoy this style of knitting.
You will need a French knitting tool, it’ll need six pegs, multiple colors of yarn, a sewing needle (preferably plastic), and a crochet hook.
Start by grabbing one color of yarn, and bring it down through the knitting tool. Leave about a 1¼ inch (around 3cm) tail past where you can first see the yarn coming out from the bottom. You are going to think of every other peg being a number 1,2, and 3. Make a mark where you want your number 1 to be. The yarn that is still connected to the spool, grab it and bring it around the first peg to the front. Go behind the next peg, in front of the one after that, and repeat until you are back to the first peg. Wrap the yarn in front of all the pegs over the first yarn. Take your crochet hook, or if you don’t have one, you probably can use your hand and grab the bottom yarn on the pegs and lift it over into the middle of the knitting tool. Loop the yarn back around the pegs over the new bottom yarn. Lift the bottom yarn over into the knitting tool. Repeat this step until you have a sin inch length of knitted yarn. You will need to pull the tail to see the whole length of the section. Take the yarn off the pegs, but keep it together, and pull the new tail of yarn connected to the spool to close the butterfly body. Cut off a 1¼ inch tail.
Create two new knitted yarns that are 8 inches long preferably in a different color to the body. These will be the wings. Take the tails on one of the wings and tie them together to get a loop. Bring the ends of the knot around the opposite side of the knitted yarn and tie it to create a wing shape. Thread the needle with the yarn left over on the wing, and thread the wing onto the body with the bumps on the wings facing away from it. Repeat with the other wing. Tie the tails on the body into it and cut them off. Tie a 2-inch piece of string on the top of the body for antennas. You can add color stripes, patterns, or eyes onto the body.
You will need loop yarn, scissors, and a pin or some sort (safety pin, bobby pin, paper clip, or binder clips). Count out 65 loops of yarn for a base length and place a clip where the length ends. Place the working yarn under the first row and line the loops. From the left-most loop of yarn where your clip is, take the next loop in the line and pull it through the loop on your first row. Working to the right, do this to all the loops on the first row until each loop is connected to another one. On the next row, start to the right and loop the yarn through the row before it all the way down. Repeat this process until you are done. Cut the loop at the end where you want to stop. Take the tail of the yarn and pull it through the final loop. Weave the remainder of the tail through your final stitches to conceal it. Tie off the tail around a stitch of yarn and cut whatever of the tail is left.
Take a piece of yarn of any length you would like; the knots will make the yarn shorter, so keep that in mind. Thinner yarn works and looks better for this. Create a slip knot at the top of your yarn. You should have a small tail on one side and the rest of the yarn on the other. Take the longer side of the yarn and loop it in your established loop. You want to pull the loop, you can either make it into another slip knot for a tighter look or make looser loops for the bracelet to look more spread out. Loop the yarn back into the loop and make it the same amount of tightness. Repeat the process until you are almost out of yarn. Make one final loop and pull the remaining yarn completely through the loop to tie it off. Use the tails of yarn to tie the bracelet around your wrist.
This process can be used to create longer crochet projects by making one length while it is connected to a spool of yarn and going back to create a single stitch across the length in a loop. Then connect more stitches as you progress through your project.
