To create the swirls you want, you will need to wrap it around a toothpick, pencil, or quilling tool. You may also want to use a pencil and a toothpick to get varying-sized swirls for your art.
Understanding basic quilling shapes allows you to make more designs. While it is not necessary to creating the shapes you want, the techniques will make it easier to acquire the wanted shape.
For this activity you will need strips of paper around the same thickness of your choosing, your choice for a quilling tool, and glue.
Wrap one strip of paper around the quilling tool until you reach the end of the spiral. Glue the end of the paper to the spiral. This is a basic spiral and is used as a base for the rest of the shapes. Shapes come from pressing the spiral in a specific way for the shape you would like. Be sure to press gently when making shapes.
To make a teardrop, press on one of the sides with two of your fingers. To make a diamond shape, press on sides opposite from each at the same time. To make a triangle, pinch one of the sides together like with the teardrop but use another finger to make the bottom flat at the same time. To make a square, press the 4 sides of the spiral flat.
Other shapes can be made in similar ways and gluing multiple shapes together can make more complicated outlines like flowers and butterflies. Depending on how loose of tight your spirals are can also affect the way the paper looks.
For this activity, you will need a background piece of paper of the color of your choice, strips of paper with around the same thickness of colors of your choice, your choice of a quilling tool, a pencil, and glue.
On your background paper, draw out the design you want. Take your quilling tool and wrap a strip of paper around it. Spread a thin line of glue on the end of you strip of paper and gently squeeze the glued part to the point your swirl ends. You can use knowledge from activity one or through experimentation on pressing the swirl into your desired shape. Glue the shape you want onto the paper. For open ended swirls repeat the process without gluing the end.
Finish the art piece you want to create and let it dry.
For this activity you will need a mirror with a frame, paper cut into strips around the same thickness of different colors, your choice of a quilling tool, a pencil, and glue.
Draw out the design you want for your mirror on the mirror itself or on a piece of paper. Curl the paper into the shapes you want, gluing the edges of any shapes you create. Glue the curls onto the mirror in the desired pattern. Let the glue dry and hang up the mirror.
For this activity you will need a frame, paper cut into strips around the same thickness of different colors, your choice of a quilling tool, a pencil, a piece of copy paper (depending on the darkness of your frame), and glue.
Draw out the design you want for your frame either on the frame or cut out a frame shape the same size as your frame and draw it on there. Curl the paper into the shapes you want, gluing the edges of any shapes you create together. Glue your shapes onto the frame in your desired pattern. Let the glue dry, place a picture into the frame and stand or hang it up.
