use calculator to do the multiplication of integers
Content:
Students:
multiply integers using mental and written strategies
Working Mathematically:
Students:
investigate, by developing patterns or using a calculator, the rules associated with multiplying integers (Reasoning)
Classroom activities:
1. Intention (2 mins):
Teacher introduces learning intention.
Today I will figure out the rule for multiplication of integers with and without the same sign
So that I can do the multiply positive integers, negative integers, one positive and one negative integer
I know I got it when:
watch a video of integer multiplication
play multiplication game
do the multiplication maze
2. Video and Give One, Get One activity (ICT) (20 mins)
students will:
divide a paper in their notebook into 2 columns and then labelling as Give One and Get One.
watch the video and note down 4-5 key information into the Give One column
share with at least 4 other students what they noted down in the Give One column and note down the others information in the Get One column.
share to the whole class the rule of multiplication for each case.
note down the rule of multiplication
Teacher.
turn on the video
play music to inform students that they need to change the partner
write the rule of multiplication on the board and do some examples to prove the rules are right.
3. Multiplication game (WM) (20 mins)
students will work in groups of 3.
How to Play:
Each player rolls the plus/minus die and the regular die. This is the first number in their equation (e.g., if a player rolls a + and 3, their first number is positive 3). The same player rolls the two die again. This is the their second number (e.g. -2). Now the player multiplies the two numbers (e.g. 3 x -2). The answer is -6, so the player will have to move their game piece back six spaces, or back to the start if their fewer than six spaces in. If they are at the start, they simple stay put.
Players take turns, moving forward when the answer is positive, and backwards when it's negative. If the answer is a two digit number, players use the digit in the ONES place to determine how many spaces they move.
Use paper and pencil to record the numbers and equations as you play. The winner is the first player to make it to the finish.
