Artur Kapp International Cello Competition

Rules of the Competition

  1. The competition is open to cellists up to 30 years of age (born on or after June 17, 1989)
  2. The competition consists of two rounds that are open to the public:
    • first round – June 17, 2019, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Church in Suure-Jaani (Järve 4, Suure-Jaani)
    • second round – June 18, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Hall of Kondas House (Ilmatari 9, Suure-Jaani)
  3. The organizer will ensure a rehearsal with the organist in the evening of June 16 and in the morning of June 17 at St. John's Church in Suure Jaani and, for those who advance to the second round, a rehearsal with Pärnu City Orchestra in the morning of June 18.
  4. The performing order will be drawn at the opening ceremony on June 16 and it will remain the same throughout the competition.
  5. The repertoire performed by the contestant must comply with the requirements set out in the Annex to these Regulations.
  6. In both rounds contestants are allowed to use sheet music during their performance.
  7. One must take into account that the orchestra will play the second round using the editions by Bärenreiter (more detailed info here).
  8. The contestants will be assessed by the jury that comprises of the following members:
    • prof. Alexei Vasiliev – cellist, rector of the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg Conservatory, head of the jury
    • prof. Thomas Wall – cellist, Music School of the City of Linz (Austria)
    • Aare Tammesalu – cellist, International Artur Kapp Society
  9. The jury's decision is final.
  10. Up to 50% of participants will be allowed in the second round. If necessary, the jury has the right to make exceptions.
  11. Prizes:
    • the jury will award three prize winners that will receive a cash prize (1st prize – €1000, 2nd prize – €600, 3rd prize – €400);
    • the jury has the right to redistribute prizes, award diplomas and special prizes.
  12. Organizers have the right to make audio and video recordings of the competition.
  13. The entry fee is €30. Participants will cover all transport and accommodation costs related to the competition.
  14. The entry fee must be paid to the bank account of International Society of Artur Kapp (Beneficiary: Rahvusvaheline Artur Kapp'i Ühing; IBAN: EE641010220023617017; SWIFT/BIC: EEUHEE2X; Bank: AS SEB Pank; Reference: "cello competition" and competitor's name).
  15. Registration is open from March 1 to May 31, 2019.
  16. To participate in the competition you must complete the registration form on the competition website no later than May 31, 2019, pay the entry fee and send a copy of the payment order to konkurss2019@gmail.com.
  17. In addition to personal and contact information, it is necessary to submit your biography, photo and sheet music of the work by a contemporary composer (as PDF files) via registration form.


ANNEX

Repertoire

1st round

  • Johann Sebastian Bach – Cello Suites BWV 1007–1012 (two movements with different characters at the selection of the participant will be performed)
  • one freely selected work from a contemporary composer (written in 1980 or later), duration up to 5 minutes
  • Artur Kapp – Prelude for Violoncello and Organ (will be performed with the organist provided by the organizer)

NB! The works of Bach and the contemporary composer will be performed in front of the altar and the Prelude of Artur Kapp in the organ loft


2nd round – with Pärnu City Orchestra (conductor Kaspar Mänd)

  • Joseph Haydn – Cello Concerto No 1 in C Major, Hob. VIIb/1, or No 2 in D Major, Hob. VIIb/2
