Hello Families!
It is crazy to think that we are almost done with the month of November! We have had so much fun this month with all of our different activities and with our first Field Trip to the Science Museum! It has been a busy month introducing new clubs like DEILab and KidStock while also getting used to the colder weather. Our schedule has also changed a little by making sure we are indoors by the time the sun goes down. We have loved getting more use of the gym in order to get our physical activity time!
Our AFAS After School students enjoyed their first field trip to the Science Museum! We were able to spend Election Day exploring all of the different exhibits and trying out the different activities. While at the Museum, our 3rd-5th grade students were able to enjoy the lightning show and the snow exhibit that was debuting that month. Our PreK-2nd grade students enjoyed playing with all of the interactive exhibits and having their lunch with each other in the museum cafeteria!
Our K-2nd students have been enjoying their clubs this month! In the Song & Dance club, they were able to enjoy the beautiful weather and go practice a dance routine in the outdoor classroom while the sun was setting! In Shake it Up club, our friends were able to try a smoothie with sun butter and gave very mixed reviews. We love that our students are always willing to try something new by taking a “thank you bite”! In the Super Heroes club, our students enjoyed some beautiful weather outside and drew their favorite superheroes on the ground using some chalk.
Our PreK learned about the changing leaves and colors this month and were able to go for a walk around Lincoln Park to collect leaves in order to make a Fall collage. They enjoyed exploring the big field and collecting as many interesting leaves as they could. We also went to the library and read books about this beautiful fall season. Our PreK also chose the book of the month, Dragons Love tacos, and were able to create their own dragon masks!
Our 3rd-5th graders have enjoyed exploring DeiLab and creating awesome LEGO structures with the instructor, Matheus! They have also taken advantage of the beautiful weather we have had this month and have played outside when they finish their homework. In Smart Cookies club, our 3rd-5th graders have learned how to make some very delicious snacks and treats that they always quickly devour when club is over!

Time seems to be moving very quickly here at the Healey as we begin to prepare for Thanksgiving break. Students are wrapping up with session 1 clubs in the coming weeks and are eagerly anticipating sign-up for session 2 clubs. We are still enjoying as much time outside as we can get even with the colder weather approaching. Please remember to send your children with weather appropriate clothes as we will continue to use the playground through December. Thanks to daylight savings it is getting darker but an investment in some solar powered flood lights has made it possible for us to remain on the playground for pick-up. The students and staff are enjoying the fresh air in place of the stuffy gym.
In room 107 we have been continuing our fun with Miss Suri. We enjoy daily stories and free choice. We have plenty of fun conversation during our snack time and the children are quickly forming new friendships daily. We’ve enjoyed creating kindness clouds with reminders of ways we can be kind to one another during our day. We’ve also had tons of fun with painting activities Miss Suri has created for us. We’ve also had some super busy days and needed to take a pause and just play. Students brighten up when they hear we get to eat snacks outside and have a “play day” instead of an activity every once in a while.
In 207 we’ve been hard at work in all of our clubs. With Mr. T absent this past Around the World club, and Miss Heather stopping by as our substitute, we learned about the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Students were then challenged to build the tallest tower they could in teams using legos. We witnessed amazing teamwork among the PreK, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders. Students also learned about the very first Olympic games hosted in Ancient Greece as well as the ancient architecture. We used logos again to try and replicate such designs as the Parthenon, amphitheater, and other column structures. Newspaper club has been practicing their interview techniques. We learned how to ask open ended questions to avoid short answers of just “yes” or “no”. Next week we have set up interviews with some of our teachers! Creative writing club has been hard at work on their stories and will be getting ready to ship off our final project very soon.
208 has continued to enjoy the games that were graciously donated by one of our families. Students have been laughing so much while playing Apples to Apples with their small groups. One group decided to try playing as if it were “opposite day”. Students giggled and enjoyed themselves as they tried to find the best card to fit the “opposite” of what was placed down. Perler beads focused on shapes related to gratitude and giving thanks. We saw lots of colorful heart shapes as we remember to spread love! Soccer has been ramping up their tasks with Mr. Henry teaching us how to cross the ball between our legs while running and also learning how to shoot the ball while running. Our Creative writing club has been diligently working on their rough drafts for their stories and everyone has officially begun working on their final drafts to be published.
As always, thank you for being such wonderful families to work with and helping to make this year a success. Please continue to check your balances on EZChildtrack and I hope you all enjoy every moment with your families this holiday season.

Group 1 and Group 4 are doing a new reading buddy program. During homework and reading. Our second graders invite the K students down to do short stories. So far it is a hit. All our second graders want to be reading buddies. Our kindergarteners LOVE to be read to.
Group 5 are getting real close to finishing up there masterful dioramas for two clubs. Some of these master pieces are really taking form. Mr. Will brought in a lot of shoe boxes to create these cool sets for climate crusaders and creatorspace. And soon we’ll share the new link to the website the 3-5 graders created!
Happy November! This has been a wonderful start to our fall adventures. The kiddos are enjoying nature walks, games called turkey turkey cross my field, and creating fun fall crafts. We kicked off our fun adventures this month by visiting the trampoline park for November 2. While folks were out voting our crew went to Altitude and got all our jumpy energy out with two other after school programs from Somerville. It felt a little like summer all over again.
Group 2’s creative wall is growing! They are really a creative bunch. I’m sure the families with kiddos in this group are filled to the brim with perler bead crafts. If you are curious what to do with all of these wonderful crafts, they can be lovely gifts to regift! Or make them into magnets and decorate the fridge! Lots of options.
Group 3’s enjoying all the fun fall activities with Ms. Ashley’s fall turkey creations. As soon as November hit the kids started creating turkey turkey everything. We tested out their turkey crazy by playing turkey turkey cross my field. And it’s true. They have gone gravy for turkeys.
As the months of holiday festivities commence, the Brown afterschool teachers want to express their gratitude to the families and kiddos for being the best silly billys and heartwarming adventurers. We are thankful every day to be your afterschool teachers!

Room 202
During November, we have been enjoying the beautiful, unusually warm fall weather. We have been spending plenty of time outside because the weather has been so pleasant. On the playground, students can play with an expanded selection of friends from both room 202 and from other After School rooms.
Inside the classroom, our weekly themes have been Transportation, The Ocean, and Harvest. The children enjoyed the activities related to these themes.
For example, we have read Native American stories that explain shooting stars, the colors and shapes of various animals, and why boulders are scattered across the Great Plains. We have discussed the modern explanation for these phenomena as well. We have also been talking about pro-social behavior in the context of these stories.
Room 108
During November, After School room 108 at the Capuano has been learning about Native Americans. We have been reading Native American Legends connected to natural phenomena, and have been using those legends to explore how Native Americans explained the world around them. We have been expanding on the concept of explanation of natural phenomena to explore what science is, and have learned about modern explanations for these phenomena.
We have used the Native American stories as the basis for a wide selection of activities such as learning how to use scissors and water color painting.
Leading up to Thanksgiving, we will be reading and talking about the holiday. We have read about how Native Americans helped the Pilgrims and how this is related to the selection of traditional Thanksgiving foods.
Room 137
Happy November! Amazing! There is a lot to learn and explore. It’s been a wonderful fall season. The kids have been enjoying some exciting activities. We tasted and compared the taste of yellow, red and green apples. We have been drawing and painting yellow, red and green trees, and we have learned a bit about pumpkins.
With the weather in our favor, we have been able to collect lots of leaves. We have done projects with the leaves we collected. Jumping in piles of dry leaves was also very exciting and enjoyable for the children.
Room 218
Room 218 has been focused on numbers. We have been cutting out numbers and pasting them onto construction paper. Let’s count pumpkins was another math activity the whole class enjoyed.
Jack was so very proud of the Spiderman figure that he built using slot a shape builders that he insisted that we share a photo of his creation in the newsletter!
November has been lots of fun in room 218. Thank you all. We all come together, parents, students and teachers, to create a fun and exciting atmosphere in After School.

Fall has been a very busy time for all of us in Afterschool at East Somerville Community School.
As most of the leaves have already fallen and the ones remaining are turning exciting colors of red, yellow, and orange, everyone at the East Somerville is making the most of the few warm weeks left before Jack Frost comes nipping at our noses! November is an exciting month -- marking the middle of session one and our extraordinary clubs! Each and every day the kids at ESCS continue to grow and prosper in everything they do, accomplishing goals they never thought to achieve before. It is a remarkable pleasure to see the kids of the ESCS engaged in their astounding clubs, all of which enable them to make their days from 2:30 – 5:30 more fun, productive, and educational.
The Strong Women Strong Girls club also makes Mondays exciting, where our ESCS girls are able to embrace their girl- awesomeness by learning and focusing on Caring through Kelly Yang, a bestselling children’s book author. They learn about her immigration journey from China to America and what it is like to move to a new place to live a new life. The mentees have been learning and focusing on both confidence and competence through identifying their strengths and the importance of self-care when decision-making, and the importance of knowing personal limitations and self-care. They also decorated a medal to represent one of their strengths or a point of pride that they feel confident about and advocacy and what it means to be an advocate for the natural world.
Session One has already fulfilled all of our expectations of educational and exciting fun, our students are all very anxious to know what the next session will bring. Hand-outs for Session clubs will be sent home in early December.
Teachers read a number of books about pumpkins, including Pumpkin, pumpkin, Pavo Para El Dia de Accion de Gracias and I am a seed, to help us learn how they grow. They did a pumpkin investigation, which was a lot of fun! In the month of November, we discuss Thanksgiving and complete festive activities such as Cornucopias and turkey “color by numbers and Pumpkins and watercolors. In time to talk students had discuss and asking questions and reflecting on all the things they are personally thankful for.
Days are getting shorter…weather is getting colder…Afterschool activities are still outside but soon starting to move indoors! As the cold weather approaches, we would like to stress the importance of students wearing the appropriate outerwear. Our goal is to have students go outside everyday if weather permits. Students must wear a winter jacket, gloves, scarves, hat, etc.
We are certainly thankful for having such a wonderful team at the ESCS and for you ALL. We look forward to an exciting holiday season! Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving with your families and friends.

Hi Everyone!
It is so hard to believe we are almost to December. All things considered for how different a school year this has been and also challenging in some ways we are moving right along and having a lot of fun in after school in the process! I am so proud of how flexible and resilient our students are too. Changing the pickup/dismissal location because of Daylight Savings and winter coming posed some confusion at first for our students, but like everything else it is now becoming a routine and they are getting used to it!
The beginning of November was a lot of fun with a trip to the Museum of Science for those students who attended the Professional Development day on November 2nd. We had such a fun time exploring, creating, and learning. I think the kids all really liked the bus ride too. Check out some of the fun things we did in these pictures:
We have been having so much fun in our clubs as well! I believe the Kennedy students will all be engineers someday for how much they love to build with legos! It is truly amazing to watch their creations come to life from our 4 year old pre-k students to our older 3rd-6th grade students. They truly are so creative and imaginative. Take a look at some of their creations:
In pre-k, Ms. Dana taught her students about Kindness Week and they created lovely Kindness rainbows as well as became kindness super heroes. They really enjoyed working on this project!
In board game club students are given the opportunity to play a game with Mr. Ethan that he guides or they can choose to play a game with a friend in which they know how to play. For example, on this day in the board game club, two of our students (one in kindergarten and one in 1st grade) sat down and just started playing chess. Mr. Ethan was in awe!
Lastly, while we do have a lot of fun always, we can’t forget about our homework and getting in some good quality reading. Whether this is reading independently as an older student or having a read aloud in our younger grades. Here is a picture of two second graders getting their homework done before going to free choice such as drawing.
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and quality time with family. As always, please let Ms. Alison know if you have any questions about anything.

Hello families! This month we welcomed our new Assistant Coordinator, Ms. Deijah! She has been getting to know all of our kiddos and working very closely with our first graders.
The Afterschool team here at WHCIS have been making sure the students are having the best time ever. The kids have also been working so hard towards earning tickets to achieve their goals and earn super fun prizes! We have all been beginning to adjust to the incoming cold and have recently made the transition to indoor dismissal. This means more games and activities in the cafeteria.
Pre K/ K
Ms. Latifa/Ms. Ari
This month the Pre-K and Kindergarten friends focused on gratitude and what this means to them. They made ‘Thankful Flowers’ and talked about the things they are thankful for. The kids also mastered some meditation and practiced their counting!
Grade 1
Ms. Deijah/Ms. Alaa
Our First Graders got to experience a variety of different activities throughout the month. For the first time they learned how to make their own playdough using cornstarch and conditioner. The softest playdough ever!
The students also built their very own lego worlds in Lego Club.
We also pinned our Thankful Feathers on our Turkey Board!
Grades 2nd-5th
Ms. Yolking
Let’s Read: Students read the book, Mix it Up, and learned about different colors and what the world of things they can create! They then used their new knowledge to mix up colors on noodles to invent a creation of their own.
Veggie Circus: The children had an awesome time learning how to juggle using handkerchiefs, SO cool!
Puzzle & Games: Students had the opportunity to create their own board games and then let their friends try them out.

Hello Families!
Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year!
We hope you are all having a wonderful November! We are in the full swing of things in our third month of After School programming and we are having a lot of fun! Our students have been enjoying some of their favorite clubs, crafts, reading and much more! We have been very fortunate with the weather so our students are still able to spend a lot of time outside… that being said we ask that you send your students to school with warm clothing and layers!
Over the Election Day PD we took our students to American Flatbread where they enjoyed some yummy pizza and candlepin bowling! Our students showed us their bowling skills and did a great job cheering on their friends!
Ms. Jane is leading out Pre-K kiddos in lots of fun activities such as; talking about feelings, singing songs, going to the park, yoga/Zumba and much more! On rainy days they get to explore the after school classroom activities and play with Legos, board games, playdough and a new Barbie mansion! On the long awaited Fridays, they get to amaze their friends by bringing one of their favorite items for Show and Tell!
Our Kindergarten, First and Second grade friends have been very busy with their clubs. Whether they are exploring the garden with the Farrington Nature group, learning about dinosaurs and the Jurassic period or participating in mindfulness meditation, we have seen great participation and fun attitudes from our students! After clubs, our Kindergarteners go off with Ms. Jane to join their Pre-K friends in games and activities. Our First and Second graders then head to the homework club where they finish any existing homework or can pick a book from our extensive collection of books to do their 20 minutes of reading!
The third through fifth grade students have had a busy month with clubs, homework time and even a field trip. They have been participating in clubs like soccer, Strong Women Strong Girls, science and much more! These kiddos have been very dedicated during homework time to make sure they get all of their homework and reading done before going on to an activity. Some of our third through fifth graders went on a field trip with our Biobus club to collect water samples at the Alewife Greenway pond to observe and learn about the ecosystem.
