Hello Families! Happy New Year!
Session 2 is off to a great start! Our students are excited about trying out all of the new options and finally being able to experience some of our most popular clubs! We are happy to receive Smart Cookies, Parkour, and DeiLab back as they are some of our most beloved clubs! The weather has kept us inside more often and we have enjoyed playing in the gym and creating beautiful works of art with fuse beads! Our students always get so excited when we bring out the fuse beads!
Our PreK students excitedly met their new Group 1 Teacher, Ms. Mandee, and were so kind to welcome her into the group! While getting to know their new teacher, our Group 1 students enjoyed working on the art projects Ms. Mandee had already planned! They made beautiful paper fish bowls, complete with a tiny pet fish! Our K-2nd grade students have enjoyed trying out their new clubs. In Crafty Books, our students read a fun book about snow and winter and then made their own snowflake mobiles! In Weird Science, our students started off with learning all about volcanoes and then began to construct their own! This club was able to go outside and see how their volcanoes exploded!
In Yoga club, our students learned some fun new yoga positions and meditation tips! Our 3rd-5th grade students were excited to try their new club options and go back to their favorite clubs as well! After homework, our students have also enjoyed participating in Connect 4 challenges and drawing with each other! In Weird Science club, the 3rd-5th graders were able to make slime and decorate it with their choice of glitter! They were able to learn what made the slime stickier or firmer as they experimented with the recipe! In KidStock, our students learned awesome improvisation skills as they acted with each other.

Hello Healey families and welcome to 2022! We are off to the races and enjoying the ride. Students were so excited to fill us in on all the fun things they did during winter break from trips to enjoying trips and time with families to all the new shows they got to watch.
Before break began we started a new free choice station in our 3rd-6th grade room: The Imagination Creation Station. Students are able to access this station after completing their homework. A variety of art supplies are available for students to use without needing to ask permission first. Any students that are having a tough time deciding what to make can take a free spin from our imagination gumball machine. Inside are plastic containers that provide a variety of pictures to draw, stories to write and objects to create. A few final touches were added once we returned to break and students have been hard at work creating away. We even have an entire bulletin board in the school hallway to showcase our art and writing!
The start of the new year also means the start of our second session here in after-school. Students got to pick their clubs before break and have been eagerly waiting for them to begin. We have so many wonderful providers working with us this session. Two separate art clubs give students the opportunity to learn a surplus of techniques as they explore different mediums. One art club is even teaching us to speak Spanish. Students were excited for another new provider to join us as they explore acting and filmmaking with CinemaKidz. Metrorock is back for a second session and our newest set of students are already enjoying all that they’re learning. Students were also excited to learn Kidstock and Smart Cookies were back for another session. We’re looking forward to creatively acting out stories and learning more delicious recipes.
Mr. T has his friends ready to rock and roll with his Karaoke club starting this session. Students will learn all about what karaoke is and why their parents find it so fun as they explore with their favorite Disney and pop songs. Mr. T is also challenging students to think critically and objectively with his Film Critics club. Students will take a look at short scenes from various movies and discuss what makes a movie, poor, good or great. In Master of Games club students will learn strategizing and technique to best play a multitude of popular games ranging from UNO to ‘Smath. Master Chefs encourages students to learn about why and how the assortment of fruits and vegetables they eat are good for them. They will learn how the plants grow and what vitamins they contain as they use them in mouthwatering recipes provided by the UMASS extension nutrition program. STEAMers club offers students an opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, art and math as they intersect in a variety of experiments and activities.
Mr.Henry’s students are looking forward to getting more opportunities to beat him in UNO as they use the strategies they learned last session in this second session of Master of Games. We have a few harder games for students to try this session and can’t wait to keep you updated on their progress. A favorite and classic club, Perler beads, is back for session 2 and students were hard at work this week creating a variety of free form animals. Students get in a nice work out with Mr.Henry’s Just Dance club in the library. Students get to explore a variety of songs as they try to learn the dances that go along with them. In Around the World club students gebagn creatiung their passports as they get ready to travel through different countries and cultures over the remaining 10 weeks. Imaginations are ready to soar in Imagination Playground as Mr.Henry challenges students to use an assortment of large blocks to build a variety of structures and scenarios.
Miss Suri’s friends are continuing to SOAR through the alphabet tackling the letters K and L.. They made kangaroos and lizards and did such a great job learning to write the letters in capitals and lowercase letters. They’ve enjoyed a variety of gross motor activities with Go Noodle and enjoy plenty of playground time. Our PreK friends are excited to have Miss Suri all to themselves as our Kindergarten friends started club and moved to an older classroom.
We can’t believe we’ve already made it through the first session of after-school and thank you all as always for your patience and support as we continue to navigate the daily updates and challenges. Please remember to check your balances on EZChildtrack and a reminder that pick-up is between 5:10-5:30 unless otherwise noted. Healey staff wish you a happy and healthy 2022!

Happy January Somerville
Spotlight on Clubs!
We started clubs the first week of January. So far we’re enjoying all our new clubs. We welcomed back Parkour Generations after not having them for 2 years! They have a indoor classroom for the really chilly, slushy, snowy days. We’re not missing a beat! We use the classroom and the hallway to get the most out of our space! The Brown school sure is unique when it comes to flexibility! Here they are playing “floor is lava”. These kids had the option to jump from each spot, or step jump to each tire. They all did really well. Both our K-2 graders and 3-5 graders are able to participate.
We’re also welcoming back Angelina, our Art in Spanish teacher. This session the kids are super excited to learn art through spanish immersion instruction. They are very focused and learn new words each week. They will be walking away with amazing art work, so clear the fridge for special works of art! They also make great gifts for family members!
Ms. Angelina is happy to start here as an outside provider. We’re so happy for her to bring her wonderful art skills.
This is one of those highly picked clubs, but not all of the kiddos can fit in it. So next session, if the Brown gets them again, we will put students who did not get in, to participate!
Fantasy Disney
We’re exploring fun crafts inspired by some of our favorite movies. We’re making fancy frozen wands to bring on some of the frozen weather. Don’t worry, we made some warm wands too :) Of course, we should have made them in the beginning of the week to ward of all the frozen weather we’ve mustered through.
We’re working on cutting out delicate stars, dinosaurs, ears for baby yoda, and even making fancy ribbon curls. It’s a fun way to connect with our favorite movies.
Codebreakers
“You can make anything into a code.” Says Mr. Will. The kiddos are crafting and cracking their own codes! They are mastering the art of code making. It’s like an insane version of scavenger hunts for your mind. Each week Mr. Will helps the kiddos come up with cool codes to decode. Now they’re taking it to a whole new level by making their own codes. Their plan is to have the younger grades crack their codes at the end of the session. Please be gentle big kids! We’re still learning numbers for us K students!
Tune in next month as we highlight more of our creative clubs at the Brown School!

We hope everyone had a lovely break and hope that you were able to take some time to just enjoy one another. We will take some time to review procedures and expectations to help make the second session as successful as the first and to continue to keep everyone safe.
New Year & New Clubs! We are excited about adding several new activity clubs! New club offerings include; DeiLab, Art in Spanish, Soccer, Fun with Puppets, Art with Fruit, Hands-on Science, Comic Book Creation, Pinta-Pinta water colors and more.
Soccer of course is a very high-demand club by our kiddos and as we know, soccer is more than just playing a new game each day but it helps students learn how to work in teams and communicate with one another. Art with Fruit club is where students will be able to make different types of artistic creations by using a variety of fruits. In addition, not only will they have the chance to explore and create art by using all different types of fruits and vegetables, they will enjoy those fruits once they finished the project! We love healthy treats and I’m sure they will too!
Our 3rd-5th Graders have been enjoying a variety of different clubs ranging from Parkour to Gym Games and Comic Book Creation. In Gym Games, students kicked off the session by learning how to play kickball and using teamwork skills to play and have good sportsmanship. Students in Comic Book Creation were introduced to learning how to tell stories through different ways such as graph art and words. We cannot wait to see what they are able to create!
In Hands on Science, students were able to do their first experiment where they were able to make a mini volcano eruption using baking soda, water and candy cane candies to bring colors for the volcano. In Pinta-Pinta (with watercolors) and Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”, students learned how a 4x5” large format film camera works.

Since Christmas break, we have been learning about dinosaurs. We are playing with plastic dinosaurs in the sand table. We are coloring, cutting and pasting dinosaurs, and reading all kinds of books about dinosaurs.
We are also investigating the time of the dinosaurs from a more scientific vantage point. We are learning about how fossils form, and using shells, stones, and plastic dinosaurs to make imprints similar to how fossils form in the real world. We are learning about what dinosaurs ate, and where they lived. We are learning the names of lots of dinosaurs. We paced out the lengths of some medium and large dinosaurs to understand just how enormous they were. We are learning that the world was different during the time of the dinosaurs - the Earth was warmer and wetter and more of the Earth was covered by shallow seas. Because there was more volcanic activity during the time of the dinosaurs there is a popular association between the dinosaurs and volcanoes, so we will make and erupt model volcanoes. Finally, we will learn a few hypotheses about what caused the age of the dinosaurs to come to an end, with emphasis placed on the currently favored belief that a large asteroid impact disrupted life on Earth 65 million years ago.
Room 202
Happy New Year from room 202.
We have been very busy while settling back into our After School routine after Winter Break. For most of January, we are learning about various aspects of winter. We have made snowflakes with Q-Tips, snowflakes with coffee filters and snow globes. We did a winter art project and a snowman art project.
We are continuing the Winter theme by talking about how animals have adapted to winter weather. We will make a coloring book called, “Where do animals sleep in the winter?” We will also do craft activities related to penguins, owls, walruses and other animals that live in cold climates.
Room 137
Hello families!
We hope that your winter break was enjoyable and eventful.
As we settle into the new year, the children have been showing interest in snow especially since we experienced snowy weather recently. With that being said, we had some “snow” fun in the classroom with shaving cream! The children used their amazing imagination and used cars and trucks to drive on and through our shaving cream snow. The children spent a significant amount of time squishing the shaving cream between their fingers and making tire tracks on the table.
We also spent some time drawing snowy pictures and practicing making snowflakes and snowmen. As we wait for our next snowfall, we will continue to engage in various snow themed activities and read lots of books about winter and snow!
Room 218
Friends in Room 218 enjoyed a nice hot cocoa party! Our kindergarten friends were rewarded for their excellent work in afterschool. The class has been doing amazing with being kind, lending a helping hand, and following directions!
We also have been working on winter activities. Our kindergarten friends worked on finishing up their snow wardrobe art activity which involved coloring, cutting, and lots of glue.
In addition to our winter themed activities, the children have spent time playing and building with other materials. One of our kindergarten friends used Legos to make Spiderman, which is his all time favorite superhero!

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!
What an interesting start we have had to 2022. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during what seems to be one of the more challenging moments of the pandemic. With that being said I do want to ask all of you to remind your children how important it is to wear your mask properly and sit with enough distance while eating at after school. We have spots to mark where to sit, we just sometimes need extra reminders! I think sometimes with our more laid back approach to after school than school, students sometimes forget they still need to follow those same guidelines to keep everyone as safe as possible no matter what time of day it is in school! Thank you in advance for your help and support with this!
While we have been reminded of how careful we still need to be in school with large groups, we are also still having as much fun as possible and learning so many new things in our new clubs in session 2 of after school.
They learned how to juggle with scarves and balance peacock feathers on their hands. They also worked in small groups or alone if they wanted to perform for the group with these circus props. Everyone has really enjoyed themselves in this club.
We have started some new clubs and welcomed back some tried and true clubs that many students seem to love. In Veggie Circus students had a wonderful time in both the K-2nd grade club and the 3-6th grade club learning some of the basics of circus performing.
Our Kidstock theatre club has been having fun these first couple of weeks in after school. They have learned the practice of charades and acting things out while getting their fellow classmates to try to guess what they are acting out. It is fun to see some students who maybe wouldn’t have necessarily chosen Kidstock as their first choice seem to really enjoy themselves. We’ll look forward to learning more fun things as the season goes on!
Kindergarten has been up to some arts and crafts lately! With the cold weather we thought it would be fitting to make some snowman art to compensate for the lack of snow this winter!
Our pre-K students have been having a lot of fun learning all about winter and focusing on winter themed activities. They have done some winter coloring pages, made igloos out of cotton balls, and made really neat painted snowflakes. This was a fun activity for them because they got to use paint which we don’t always do!
In Mr. Ethan’s space explorers club students have learned about the planets and constellations. It was really neat to see how much they already knew about outer space. They did a fun activity connecting the dots to create different constellations. The students in this club are definitely enjoying themselves.
In our board games and cards clubs students are learning new games or playing some fan favorites such as candy land, chess, uno, and jenga. They all got really into the games they were playing and the teamwork and comradery I see take place during this club is really great tos see. There is also conflict resolution happening which is another great thing to see!
In the science club we spent time outside cloud gazing! Learning about the different types of clouds but also drawing what we see in them!
In the Mixed Media Art club we started making art with recycled materials, like these mushrooms made out of egg cartons!
We are looking forward to making more memories and learning more new, fun things as session 2 continues!
Food and Friends club showing their plates in the above photos as well as an awesome lego creation!
Cinema Kidz club brainstorming ideas about a movie they’ll be making!
Mini Movers club getting ready to start their club!
As always, please reach out to Ms. Alison if you have any questions.

Pre K/ K
Ms. Latifa/Ms. Ari
The Preschool students are learning about winter and snow by counting using snowmen and playing snowman counting games. They have also been working on their gross motor skills with a super entertaining snowball toss and catch game. Something else fun, they’ve been making different winter projects like igloos, and a fun science experiment of making snow!
P.S. We are still keeping up with their Yoga and meditation time/social emotional learning.
Grade 1
Ms. Deijah/Ms. Alaa
In First Grade we started some new and fun clubs. The children have really enjoyed Farrington Nature club where Mr. Bee allows them to explore outdoors! We have also had fun in safari art by learning different facts about different animals around the world. Ms. Alaa, our high school helper, has started an academic club with the children during homework time where they work on their math and grammar.
Grades 2nd-5th
Ms. Danielle
Our older kiddos have started a couple of new clubs. They have enjoyed the new cooking club with Chef Micheal and making so many yummy treats! They have also enjoyed the change up of going outside with Farrington Nature and getting more familiar with the environment. Safari Art has been joyful with different animal crafts.

Hello Friends and Families!!
Welcome to Session 2!
We hope you all had a happy, healthy and restful New Year! We are back in the swing of things with some new clubs for Session 2! We are excited to announce the start of a couple new clubs by outside providers, JAE (Haitan Dance Club) and KidStock (an acting and theatre club). We also started new clubs taught by our very own after school teachers. These clubs include; Arts and Culture, Lego Club, SELF, Crafty minds, Kindness Club, Karaoke, and Origami. Speaking of after school teachers we would like to introduce Seana who is a new full time after school teacher who will be working with our 3-6th grade friends! Please introduce yourselves and say hello!!
Our Pre-k pals have started the year out strong with the help of their teachers Ms. Jane and Ms. Darley! They have been playing in activity stations, making arts and crafts and even getting outside to enjoy the winter weather (as long as it’s not too cold)!
Our K-2nd kiddos are having a fantastic time with the start of new clubs! We have created a healthy balance between clubs, activities and homework/reading time. We are enjoying our club time with our after school teachers; Ms. Vanessa, Mr. K and Ms. Christine as well as some new teachers coming to use through outside providers! Whether the kids are becoming dance professionals through JAE, superstar singers with Karaoke, or becoming an origami artist, everyone is having an amazing time and learning new skills!
Our 3rd-6th grade friends were very excited for the session 2 clubs and having a super fun time! They have homework time down and love talking about their favorite books they are reading. With the addition of our new After school teacher Seana we will be able to provide more club options for the 3rd through 6th in the coming weeks and we can’t wait! Stay tuned for new club options!
