Hello Families!
It’s finally April! We are so excited to start outdoor dismissal again and increase the amount of time our students play outdoors! We have all been basking in the sun and enjoying having some clubs outdoors. Our students have settled into their clubs and are enjoying trying out all of the new ones we had to offer for this third session. This month, we welcomed our new 3rd-5th Teacher, Mark! Our students are enjoying getting to know him.
Our PreK students have enjoyed working on spring time projects for their theme of the month! Ms. Mandee made some cool spring themed slime where each of the PreK and Kindergarteners got to help mix a different part of the slime. The PreK also got to make their own bumble bees as they learned about how bees help the flowers grow in the springtime. Our students also worked on some cute springtime animal puppets and came up with their own stories for their puppets! Ms. Mandee has also taken our smallest friends to the library to read some books about the spring and all the beautiful changes that come with the spring season.
Our K-2nd grade students are enjoying their different clubs! In Animal Planet, our students have been learning about a different animal each week. This week, they were able to go outside and use chalk to draw their own favorite animal and create a background story for them! In the Outer Space club, our students are learning about our vast solar system as they create fun crafts about space. They have learned about astronauts and about the different planets that make up our solar system!
Our 3rd-5th grade students are enjoying getting to know their new Teacher, Mark! They have also been enjoying their new clubs, with students exploring fan favorites like Deilab and Soccer! In DeiLab, our students were able to work on building a whole city and explaining the theme behind their cities! In Soccer club, our students are able to test their abilities in different teams as they learn to work together and build up their soccer skills. Our 3rd-5th students have also been learning how to create their own animations in CinemaKidz while practicing their Spanish skills as they learn to paint in Art in Spanish club.

Happy Spring everyone! We’re in the final months of our school year and have so many fun- filled weeks to look forward to. Our 3rd session is off to a great start and the students have been so engaged in their activities.
Our social-emotional learning club, EmotionScape, has been off to a fantastic start. Students worked to create fortune-tellers with positive affirmations inside, we played a skittles get to know your feelings game and we participated in a fun board game that challenges us to be honest on what our reactions would be to various situations. Students have thoroughly enjoyed their escape rooms as well and have done an AMAZING job working as a team to solve all their puzzles. This past week students watched a short movie from Miss O’s childhood called “Kids for Character” where they learned the importance of the 6 pillars that hold our character. We explored trustworthiness, responsibility, caring, citizenship, fairness and respect. The students are showing great growth in their understanding of feelings and finding safe ways to handle them.
Branching off of citizenship, our Community Helpers club has been hard at work. We first discussed the meaning of the term “community” and reviewed some of the communities that we are part of. Our club focuses on different, unique ways that we can give back to the school and greater Somerville communities. We cleaned the grounds of the school and our teachers and fellow students were very appreciative of our hard work. We began correspondences with some elderly friends at a nursing home in Cambridge, sharing stories, pictures and kind words with each other. We created positive affirmation cards and delivered them anonymously to the neighbors in our community. We have also been hard at work collecting donations daily for the last 3 weeks to create care bags for the homeless residents of Somerville. Together we collected enough materials to put 20 bags together to be delivered by Miss O over the weekend. Students are already asking when the next schoolyard clean-up is and have begun creating their next set of nursing home cards.

Karaoke Club
Chess and basketball with Mr. Henry, has students learned the names of each piece in a game of chess and where they can be moved on the chess board. We also learned the basics of how to dribble and shoot the basketball. Once some of the students learned the basics, they were already playing a basketball game.
In Karaoke we have been encouraging the students to explore a variety of music genres. This week the students were singing k-pop music and hip hop music. Students have also shared their favorite songs and sung with partners versus individually.
In Imagination playground the students have been working as a team each week to build different kinds of buildings or statues, This past week the students played castle ball, where they build a castle in two teams and once the castle is built they run up to grab the balls and throw it at the other castle to knock it down!
Nutrition 101 has us talking about what kind of smoothies are our favorite and what ingredients are your favorite to use. We have made several smoothies together using pears, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, yogurt, milk, water and pineapple juice. We also talk about what kinds of food and fruit are healthy to eat and which ones we should only eat sometimes. This past week students drew themself as their favorite fruit or vegetables and had to explain why they chose that fruit or vegetable.
Puppettering Club:
In this club we are learning about the world of puppeting through creating shadow puppets, felt puppets, Marionettes and the creation of our very own puppet theatre.
Lil Theatremakers: In this club we are diving into character work through acting exercises, improv exercises, and dress up. Once we solidify our characters, we will create a play with all of these characters included.
Comic Book/ Cartooning Club:
In this club we are delving into the world of comics through creating cool comic book characters, through delving into how to create a comic book story and through enhancing our drawing skills by learning how to draw actual cartoons with the help of a real online cartoonist.
In Puzzle Masters club, students have been exposed to different types of thought-provoking puzzles. We have done escape rooms as an entire class, jigsaw puzzles, and some matching/logic games.
In Art with Fruit club, students have been learning about different types of fruit and their benefits to the human body. Additionally, we have been using the fruit to make small creations. We have made snakes, caterpillars, rocket ships, and dolphins all while using bananas, watermelon, strawberries and other delicious treats.

Escape the Room
“It took all weekend to come up with this escape room” The level our teachers go to create fun and engaging activities doesn’t surprise anyone. We love what we do and it’s for moments like this picture here. Kids opening up the box after spending 40 mins trying to escape the “mine”, props and all!
Escape the room is the new 3-5 grade club that has students puzzling over codes pepped by their teacher. It was one of the highly sought after clubs this session. I have a feeling it will come back next year. Hopefully we’ll meet some escape the room creators from central square! These kiddos love to create fun and interesting adventures in the library.
Carnival
All sorts of carnival games for carnival. The students are challenged by large group games. They get their bodies moving and minds thinking when they play “lava floor’ or ‘hulu hoop pass’. We love to play games that have the whole class working together to solve challenges. The best part of this is we get to be outside on the blacktop and now that it is closer to spring we are enjoying the wonderful weather together.
Move it Move it
In this club we, you guessed it, move our bodies. From large group games, to fun dance parties. One of their favorite dace parties has us moving our bodies to Just Dance moves. Just Dance is a video game that we play from youtube. The kids follow the dance moves to some of their favorite songs. Can you guess how many times we played the disney hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno?” Thats right, 4 times. Something to make the dancing even better, we added a disco light for ambiance. Nothing like some fun lights to bring in some more energy.
Dirty Science
The best part about spring is we can take our clubs back outside. This session the 3rd-5th graders are learning about science in their favorite way, hands on! They were digging in the dirt searching for worms, learning about how to take care of a “pet” worm. Learning how to make salt crystals and why they are cubed. And of course, making volcanoes outside! Sometimes the best way to learn is to get your hands dirty and try it out.

Spring is here and excitement is in the air as we continue to have a wonderful year of learning in the afterschool program!
April brings more sunshiny weather and happiness to East Somerville Community School! We are so lucky to live in a place where the weather is so inspiring! In the spring, we experience winter, fall, and summer all in one day!
Take note of this and please make sure that your child brings a light jacket to school, every day! It is very cold in the morning and very cold in the afternoon. As always, we greatly appreciate the combined efforts of all as we support our students in successfully meeting the highest standards set before them.
I would like to introduce you all and formally welcome our new highschool helpers, Ms, Tashmeer and Ms. Estefani. Don’t hesitate to say hello! We are so excited to have two great additions to our amazing team.
Ms Estefani (Left) & Ms. Tashmeer (Right)
April is the month full of colorful activities and rainbows. Students look forward to baby animals, new plant life, and a lot of greenery and flowers are popping up all around us! Students are enjoying their arts and crafts activities and reading their favorite books like the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and the Elephant & Piggie books! In How to Draw, students are learning step-by-step how to draw different types of animals and flowers that we see most during the Spring Season.
We are in the fourth month of 2022; time just keeps passing by in a blink of an eye. The students have been busy learning, socializing with their friends in each grade level, working on a solution to problems, supporting each other with homework, reading, teaching one another new games, running around, playing on the playground, and living their life to the fullest. As each day passes by, we see our students growing and getting ready for the next upcoming grade with learning more about responsibility, honesty and kindness.
The planting and growing club will celebrate the spring by planting in the garden and learning all about plants and vegetables that can grow in our own backyard and what the benefit of healthy eating is. In the Art with Fruit club, students are also learning about all the rich vitamins and minerals in our fruits and vegetables. They celebrate each day by making their own creation of fresh fruit and enjoying it right after! Farrington Nature has also been teaching students about our environment and ways in which we can protect it.
Our 3rd-5th graders have been helping each other with homework and Ms. Nathalya has mixed multiplication with fun and created a game in which students compete to answer multiplication questions as fast as they can. This way, students are practicing their math skills while enjoying time with their peers. In the very popular Pokémon Club, students are not only learning about Pokémon but also creating their own Pokémon cards using their own creativity!

Capuano room 108 learned a little bit about spring during the last weeks of March. We read books about what happens during spring; that the weather gets warmer, trees and plants flower and get leaves, animals come out of hibernation and have babies. We did corresponding projects. For example, we made collages using bugs and flowers and also made collages using frogs, ducks and bunnies. For another example of an activity related to spring, we planted sunflower seeds and watched them grow.
Starting at the beginning of April we learned a bit about the watery environments of the world. Of course, we read books and did fun projects related to the topic of each book. For example, we read “Glow” by W. H. Beck and made coffee filter jellyfish.
The weather has also begun to improve and we have been spending lots of time outdoors.
Room 202
Our theme for the month of April is spring and all the fun and exciting things it brings such as insects, fruits, and vegetables.! For our insect week, the children dived into learning and exploring about what they do, how they help our environment, and where they live. Of course the children had the opportunity to participate in fun insect art activities such as making tissue paper bees, ladybugs and counting insect books.
Fruits and vegetables are always fun to learn about and explore because of their colors and shapes. We especially got a kick out of learning which fruits and vegetables the children like and dislike! We have read many books and learned that in our class, we have a lot of fruit and veggie eaters because “fruits and veggies are good for our bodies!” I’m sure you all have seen your childrens crafts for these weeks such as our carrot craft and fruit and vegetable baskets.
Lastly, we have been spending more time outside on the playground!. The children are very happy and enjoy playing together. We are continuing to remind everyone of the playground rules and look forward to all the warmer days that are ahead!
Room 137
Dear families,
Our theme this month was frogs, birds, and planting. We have been reading and learning a lot about them. We also have been able to enjoy some of the beautiful weather outside on the playground.
We have gone on several neighborhood walks where we looked for bird nests, listened for birds chirping, and found different types of birds in our environment. You would be surprised how much your children know about birds and how fast they are learning. Way to go 137!
Room 218
With the weather finally moving into warmer temperatures, Room. 218 kiddos have been enjoying playground time! The children are having a blast playing tag or just swinging on the swings. We love outside time! Kindergarten students were able to use chalk to make tic-tac-toe games and many cool art drawings!
The kindergarten class wishes everyone a safe and fun April vacation and look forward to wrapping up this month with many more fun activities!
The children were able to demonstrate their artwork while admiring other classmates at work! Room. 218 has been getting real creative with drawing and designing treasure maps! Students have demonstrated a lot of interest in designing map outlines of cities, roads and lots of gold!

Hi everyone! It is so hard to believe there is just about 2 months left of this school year. It is so nice to have things basically back to “normal” after such a long time.
We have been having a lot of fun during session 3; learning new things, creating, exploring, and working together. Take a look at some of the wonderful things our students have been doing here at the Kennedy After School Program.
Our students love to create and show off their lego creations. It really is so interesting to see how their minds work and to see them work together to build something really amazing!
In the Jewelry making club we have been making alot of fun things! We started off with beaded bracelets and then moved onto earrings. Everyone in the club took a strong liking to the earring making many making more than one pair, as gifts and for themselves!
Kindergarten students spent time last week making their own bugs in celebration of spring!
In the Stories and Art club we read “I Like Myself” by Karen Beaumont and then made self portraits to capture what we all like about ourselves.
Our Origami club has quickly become a fan favorite. The students love to create and follow the directions step by step to make some very interesting 3D creations. They have learned that origami comes from Japan. Ms. Alison was given a leprechaun hat origami creation from one of our talented students!
Our first grade students and Mr. Ethan have been hard at work on puzzle making these past couple of weeks. It has been nice to be able to leave the puzzle out each day and come back to where they left off the next day. They did finish this puzzle and another one! They were very excited about it.
Our Smart Cookies club enjoys making new types of food every week. They learn new recipes each week and have fun doing it. Here they made some bread to look like an animal. So fun!
World Travelers Club
Our World Travelers club has been learning about different countries, their cultures, and things unique to them. They have learned about France and the Eiffel Tower, Mexico and the Day of the Dead Holiday, and Japan and their festivals, the cherry blossoms and origami. We’re looking forward to what is next!
Our 3-6th grade students have been having fun in our new club Art in Spanish. They learn words and phrases in Spanish related to what they are creating. They have been working on canvas paintings of flowers in vases.
As always, please reach out to Ms. Alison with any questions, etc! Please make sure to check your EZ Childtrack Balances and pay any outstanding balances!
Thanks so much!

Hello Families!
As the weather has begun to warm up and we’ve welcomed Spring, we have been spending a lot more time outside! We’ve started session three and it has brought fun new clubs and activities to occupy our time. We’ve also welcomed a new Assistant Coordinator to our program, Ms. Daniela, make sure to say hello! This transition has also brought about a new spout of energy for the kiddos and staff!
Pre-K/ K
Our Pre-K friends have been focusing on Eco-Friendly Nature. This means they’ve had lots of outside time and so many environmental creations.
Ms. Latifa helped them understand ways we can recycle by making some egg carton goggles, so we can see the birds and creatures better! Alongside that we got to use actual pieces of nature to create an art project. And don’t worry we made plenty of time for some dress up fun and shaving cream art!
The Kindergarten have continued to be VERY into Pokemon. They love using this free time to create their own pokemon cards and have battle sessions with them. They’ve also been joining the first grade in clubs and have gotten to put their imagination and creativity to the test with clubs like Kidstock and Farrington Nature.
Also one of our new favorite activities is having Ms. Deijah push us on the swing until her arms give out haha!
Grade 1
Our First Grade buddies have been crushing it in club!
With Ms. Veronica’s help they’ve gotten to design their names using straws and making patterns. We’ve also been loving Art in Spanish and learning about various genres of art and getting to use all different types of professional artistic materials.
Grades 2nd-5th
Our older bunch of kids have been really invested in Farrington Nature club. They’ve gotten to enjoy so much outside time and really get in touch with nature! Art in Spanish has also made a grand reappearance and the students are learning so many new spanish words and doing art association. Ms. Ally has continued the art theme with the kiddos, bringing in the digital art aspect with Awesome Artists. So many unique and creative themes!

Hello Families and Friends!!
Happy April!
We hope you have all been enjoying the sunny weather we have been having this month because we definitely have been! We are well into session three and having an amazing time! If you haven't heard yet, then it must not be as exciting as we thought it would be, but we have introduced computer lab Fridays. This Activity runs every Friday for 30 minutes and our kiddos get to use the computer lab to play math and educational games! Something to keep us motivated during the week.
Our Pre-k buddies have been very busy with their teachers Ms. Jane and Ms. Darley! Each day they start out with sharing feelings and reading a book. This month they spent as much time as they could outside playing on the playground and doing activities such as soccer and yoga! I promise you by the end of this school year we might see our very next Megan Rapinoe, or our very own Cesar Corrales. Our young ones are always breaking records, from the top scorer, the fastest runner at our school, or even who can hop on one foot the longest. We might as well have our very own olympics and have our afterschool get the gold medal.
The K-2nd graders are loving their clubs and extra time they are getting outside! From acting club to cooking and everything in between we are having a great time and practicing kindness along the way. I would like to start off by saying we literally have our very own Picasso, Da Vinci, Frida, Basquiat but in spanish. Learning Spanish through the work of art. Not to forget but we have our very own club where we save the world dady by day by planting seeds for our garden, providing fruit and vegetables for the community to grab.
Every Friday, we tend to let our creativity come out and release our inner rockstar in our very own club of JAM. Not to get it confused with the spread! Run by our very own Teacher, MR. K we go through a list of genres to open our palette of creativity and enjoy the music from around the world. If you have any requests please send them our way! We always connect better with the sound of music.
3rd-5th graders have been having a fantastic time with Ms. Seana’s clubs and our outside providers. Some of our new clubs include Art & Spanish, Geek Squad, Super Sleuths and Film club! Watch out in the near future for the Film Clubs project… it will be coming to a theater near you! Not to forget
