ESCS Afterschool Staff
Shekina Beaucicaut will be moving and attending Rowan University in New Jersey with a major in History, Kelly Zelaya Perez will be attending UMASS Boston with a major in Nursing and a hopeful minor in Spanish and Christopher Thomson will be attending Bunker Hill Community College with a major in Marketing/Business. One of the greatest parts of working for the Community Schools program is the community that builds inside each school. The Healey was home to some of these students in their elementary years and will continue to be home for them even after they move on to bigger things. Thank you for letting after-school be a part of your high school years and I hope you know how proud we all are of you.
On Monday, June 6, three of our high school helpers successfully graduated high school. I want to take a moment to send a huge congratulations to Christopher Thomson, Shekina Beaucicaut and Kelly Zelaya Perez. These three students have shown up to work every day with an amazing attitude and have exceeded all my expectations as employees. It has been an honor to work alongside each of you and I am confident you will have great success in life.
As the school year comes to an end, we would like to extend our heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to our high school helpers on their graduation and wish them luck as they embark on the next chapter in life!
Joseph Amari, Gianna Amari and Carina Modesto are attending UMass Boston starting in the fall where Joseph will study Business Management, Gianna will study Health Science and Carina will study Nursing. It has been an amazing year working with our future CEO who will start a company that changes the world, our future doctor who will be saving lives, and our future nurse who will provide essential care for us someday.
Joseph, Gianna, and Carina: each of you has left a positive mark on our community and within our afterschool program, especially with so many students looking up to you as their future role models. It has been our pleasure to be working alongside all three of you.
Understanding your hard work, we all know that college will be a piece of cake for all three of y’all, but just know that you have the whole Somerville Community School backing you up.
Congratulations to our graduating High School Senior, Dianna Mendoza!
We can confidently say Dianna is a kind, smart, caring and a responsible young lady. She comes to work with a smile on her face every single day and laughs at every joke we make, even when they're not so funny.
The students at Winter Hill LOVE Ms. Dianna and her positive energy. We are so proud to see her accomplish her goals and are excited for what is to come for her!
The AFAS After School team would love to CONGRATULATE our H.S. Intern, Marisa Lopez, who just graduated high school this month!
Marisa has been an important part of Community Schools, starting as an intern during our Summer Adventure Program to being an intern for the AFAS after school program. Marisa has worked wonderfully with our Kindergarteners and always has a smile on her face as she answers endless questions and helps with every project.
The AFAS after school program would not have run as smoothly without her! We wish Marisa all the luck in college and hope to hear of all the wonderful steps and success she achieves on this new path!
Thank you, Marisa, for being a team player and all around joy to work with!

Hello Families!
We are in May! The weather keeps getting more and more beautiful! We are enjoying playing outside and officially starting up outdoor dismissal again. All of our groups are taking advantage of the weather and bringing our students to get some sun and enjoy the playground and Lincoln Park again. Our clubs are also in full swing and our students have settled into them nicely.
Our PreK students have been working hard on their spring crafts and experiments! This month, they made a spring themed slime that was a big hit with all of our students. A little magic was experienced in our PreK class as they made wands as well to cast their own spring spells! They’ve had so much fun reading books and working on their projects before going outside to enjoy the beautiful weather.
Our K-2nd grade students are still having fun in their clubs! In Drawing Club, they welcomed the warmer weather by making flowers! They also were able to paint some beautiful scenery. In Maker’s Space club, our students use all sorts of recycled materials to make owls and any creature their imagination could come up with. In Yoga club, our students enjoyed stretching and learning new moves to calm their bodies and stretch their muscles. In Weird Science club, our students were so excited to finally have the perfect weather to go outside and erupt their volcanoes! They each chose the color of their lava.
Our 3rd-5th grade students have been busy creating their mini animations in CinemaKidz club! They have been learning how to make their own characters and props while writing their storylines. In RUSH Soccer club, they have been busy practicing different defense and offense techniques while engaging in games against each other. In Art in Spanish, they have been learning more and more Spanish as they challenge their artistic skills and learn many new techniques. Our students are also excited for the better weather where they can restart their soccer games outside on the playground. Our new 3rd-5th Teacher, Mark, has also been busy introducing our students to classic card games and board games that have everyone excited to play!

Hello Healey families!
We have been enjoying the Spring season to the fullest here in after-school. Our last half day Wednesday we took a walking trip to Foss Park to enjoy some much deserved time in the sun.
In Community Helpers Club, students have been working diligently all semester towards becoming more conscientious members of the school and greater Somerville community. As of late, students have been making cards for the elderly, writing notes of encouragement to children in the hospital, and continuing their efforts in cleaning up the school. In addition students created birthday cards for Sargent Victor Butler, the last remaining Tuskegee Airman, who is preparing to celebrate his 100th birthday. While completing all of these tasks, students are asked to reflect upon why they believe their work matters and how they think they are positively contributing to the community.
Students have been learning about different types of fruits all semester long while getting the ability to make their own masterpieces in Art with Fruit.
After a brief discussion on what vitamins certain fruits have to offer, students are then asked to follow along to a guided activity. We have made dolphins, snakes, rocket ships, and many other objects while using pineapple, watermelon, grapes, etc. Most recently, students were given the latitude to make their own creation.
Emotionscapes club has been doing such an amazing job continuing their work with emotions and reactions.
Students have created mantra necklaces to use when they’re feeling stressed or low on confidence. Each student got to create their very own mantras that they felt would help them the most.
We then rolled them up and sealed them closed so our mantras are for each student alone to know and wear. Students wrote down phrases such as “I can do anything”, “I am brave” or “ I am kind”.
Students have continued working as a team to solve their escape rooms. We have focused on empathy and managing our emotions.
Students have worked on coloring books with a wide variety of facial emotion expressions. We have been really proud of our students work and love to see them using the strategies they are learning in real time.
Our students in Mr. Henry’s clubs have been hard at work in their clubs.
In Chess and basketball the students have been working on their strategies on how to move each piece.
In karaoke the students have been singing their favorite songs from the past 5 years.
In Imagination Playground the students have been working on building different kinds of homes that they can build with blue blocks. Students see sample pictures of structures beforehand and then try their hand at designing their own.
In nutrition class the students have been learning about making different kinds of smoothies and have been learning about what is healthy to eat and what isn't.
In Lil Theatermakers we have finished our play and we are working on creating a set. Students are learning about teamwork and being respectful of others' opinions. In our puppeteering club we have finished our puppets and we are working on creating a puppet show. Students used several strategies to create their puppets and needed to problem solve when our first tries didn’t work. In comics club the kids are working on creating 6 virtual panels for their comics on the computer. We have been utilizing the website Pixton and students have had so much fun creating digital versions of their characters and bringing them to life.
Please join us in celebrating the end of clubs and our school year on June 8.
Community Helpers will be hosting a bake sale from 12pm-1:30pm on the Meacham St sidewalk and we invite families to come and join us from 4:30pm-5:30pm for pizza and games on the sidewalk and tot lot of the school.
Thank you as always for your continued support of our program and our students, you've been an amazing group of families to work with.

May the spring time adventures begin! It’s happening, we’re gearing up for our water play days thanks to you parents of the Brown afterschool. We have a large order of water play toys coming for our big water play day ( most likely a half day. On those days be prepared to send your kid with a change of clothes, towel, swimsuit, sunscreen and water shoes!
Welcome Mr. Kasey! He is our newest team member to join the afterschool program. He will be with our 3rd-5th grade group. Kasey joined us in April but began an internship with the Brown school a few months before. He is finishing up undergrad at Lesley University! Here he is holding up one of the sweet Brown school mugs. Thanks for the teacher's appreciation gifts! We love them!
Group 5 was kind enough to help wrap and distribute the teacher appreciation gifts to all the afterschool teachers.
It took some stealth to get the signatures of all the kiddos, but none of the teachers even batted an eye when the older kids walked in their rooms.
They sneakily got the kids from each group to write their names on a card.
Ms. K’s Dance Club
What happens when one of our outside providers has to call out? Well, Ms. Kelsey teaches her favorite club: Dance! We move our bodies to the most upbeat hip cool kids bop version songs. Our favorite part is putting the disco lights on and jamming out. Its always a party here at the Brown school.
Spring Crafts
What better way to celebrate the spring by crafts! We love to be crafty using all the spring colors. Here the kids made spring wreaths featuring butterflies. They had to cut out the insects and color in their flowers. This beautiful wreath could hang on the door of a special someone on mothers day!
Art in Spanish
Has taken the club outside for some fresh air and fresh ideas.
Now that the weather is less April shower and more May flowers like, we’re having our clubs outside and enjoying the beautiful weather.
Here the kiddos are learning how to do the human figure. We’re way past the stick figures in this club.
Fun Friday
The beauty of Friday is that it starts with the letter F, which stands for FUN!
The kids get to enjoy some of their most favorite activities in this club. This can include a trip to the park, doing perler beads, having a dance party, or even doing a lego challenge.
We like to add a club that has a little bit of everything on Fri’Yay’.
Here we have our kiddos making their own puzzle! It’s easy! First draw a awesome picture then color it in, and afterward cut it out into puzzle pieces.
Pass it off to a friend to try and figure out what the picture is and, BAM, you got yourself a cool puzzle.

May and June were full of wonderful activities and fun for East Somerville Community School After School Program. All of our students are more energetic than ever and now that MCAS testing is over, we have even more reason to celebrate!! We are happy to report that the students continue to enjoy all of their clubs. With the nice weather coming, we hope to take more of our activities outside.
Students in Gym Games have been flexing their intellectual muscles playing Brainquest, Jeopardy, and 'Are you Smarter than a?'.
In addition, students learned about the sport of Cricket from the United Kingdom and played their own version of a Cricket match.
Our Water colors club has already completed two paper mache projects, making models of animals and masks to take home.
Students in Lego Architecture club have been learning about monorail transportation and geodesic domes, and started building their own spaceships out of Lego's.
Farrington Nature club has been having fun exploring nature and making their own rock family by using rocks that have been found near by.
In Shape Animals, our students have been learning about shapes and identifying and organizing visual information, including reading, math, and science. they also, learned that shapes can be found everywhere around us and in nature as well as in many different animals.
So far, they have been able to share an encounter with each other and how we can find shapes in each by reading the book All About Me and creating an art activity by making a person using all different shapes.
We also read other books like, The Shape of Me and Other Stuff, Wild About Shapes, The shapes of Things and more!!
Puzzles and Games club, Students have a great time building cognitive and fine motor skills, developing memory skills, as well as the ability to plan, test ideas and solve problems. While completing a puzzle, children need to remember shapes, colors, positions, and strategies to complete them.
In What’s the Difference Club, students learned about the eight phases of the moon and made a “phase finder” to help us identify what phase the moon is in and what is the difference. They also learned about the astronomical season that has been around for thousands of years and is based on the rotation of Earth around the sun. The Earth's tilt on its axis is what causes our astronomical seasons. The seasons have two solstices, which describe our shortest day in winter, and our longest day in summer of the year.
Sports and teams club students have been learning the rules and skills used to play different sports. Students also learned how to improve coordination and muscle control by performing a variety of movements, and developing proper skills to provide prevention against injury. In Overtime Athletics, the kids get to have a daily breath of fresh air as they play various games in the courtyard, playground and soccer field outside. The games can be anything from Fishy Cross My Ocean etc.
In honor of Earth Day, Kindergarten students spent a week discussing our planet. They discussed the importance of keeping our Earth clean and made a list of different ways to take care of our Earth. Some ideas included, recycling, picking up trash outside, and turning the water off while washing dishes or brushing your teeth. We continued our journey through space by learning about the different planets and watched a short video called “the solar system” and we read the book Goodnight Moon, “Cuidemos la Tierra”.
All in all it has been a busy session so far and we are looking forward to finishing out the year with lots of exciting activities to come!
Save the Date!
Please join us for our ESCS Afterschool End of the School Year Celebration on Wednesday, June 15 on the Pearl Street Playground from 4:30-5:30 PM, and enjoy Sundaes Your Way!

In Capuano room 108, we have been learning Bugs. We made bug collages and learned the difference between insects and other bugs. We drew ants and spiders to drill down on the difference between insects and other bugs – ants have 3 body parts and six legs as do all insects, whereas spiders have two body parts and eight legs. We read lots of factual and fanciful books about bugs and did bug yoga.
Mother’s Day fell at the end of our Bug Theme, so we also made a couple of presents for our moms.
Later this month, we learned about Outer Space. We made a scale model of the solar system called either “the Earth as a peppercorn”, or “the thousand yard model.” This exercise was developed by the education department at the Kit Peak National Observatory. You can read about it online by searching for, “the Earth as a peppercorn.”
Room 108:
As the year is coming to a close, it is time to look back to where we came from, and how we got to where we are today. We had a busy year, and over the year the children grew in innumerable ways. Children always seem to make remarkable social growth from age four to five. This year, our children had a wide array of social challenges to confront, from becoming older siblings to learning to deal with an active classroom environment. We hope that through our guidance, we, the staff, left them better equipped to deal with similar situations in the future.
We are delighted to have been a part of the life of your child during the past year. We wish both students and parents happiness and success in the future.

Hello families
Happy May. This month in Room 137, the children have learned about and explored butterflies!
We learned and talked about the butterflies life cycle and looked at pictures of all the fun bright colors they can be! To follow all the butterfly learning, the children participated in fun butterfly art activities where they picked their own colors to paint their butterfly wings.
In addition to making butterflies, the children got busy making special Mother’s Day cards for their mom’s and important people in their lives. This even included them getting their hands messy with paint!

Dear families, We made it to the end of the school year!
We want to take a moment and thank you for allowing us to work with your precious children. It has been a great pleasure having each and every single one of them in our class. We have built a community together and spent lots of hours playing, being kind, and most of all, learning while having fun! We enjoyed seeing the children's smiles, hugs, and happy friends. We wish you all a Happy Summer! Best of luck to all our friends on their kindergarten journey!
Ms. Silvana and Mr. Brian
Room 202
We have been continuing different weekly themes this month such as colors, zoo animals, birds, and butterflies. During our color week, we explored primary and secondary colors. We experimented with mixing colors and making their own color wheels.
The children really enjoyed the color themed song that followed which sparked a color hunt around the classroom!
For our zoo animal week, we went around the group and each friend shared a zoo animal that they know. We then played an animal guessing game where they got to act out an animal and their friends had to guess what it was.
The children got real creative with their acting and gave really great hints! The teachers also learned of a few new animals ourselves! Of course we did some arts and crafts which included giraffes and animal puppets!
In between all the crafts and games, the children continue to enjoy choice time and playing with each other. They have done some beading, made collages using various art materials , and enjoy going outside to the playground.
Room 202:

To our students, we want to say THANK- YOU for when we teach, we also learn. A little bit of each of you will always be with us.
To the parents, we say THANK-YOU for allowing us to be your child's teachers. It has been a wonderful and rewarding year for us.

Room 218
Happy May! Room. 218 wishes everyone a great month of May. Room. 218 has been busy with reading! Our kindergarten friends have been reading many books during choice time and sometimes did a class vote for a teacher read-a-load! Some of our class favorites consist of “Pete the Cat, I Love My White Shoes,” “Panda Kindergarten,” and “ Talk and Work it Out”. With all this reading, the kindergartners got extra creative and the idea of becoming authors of their own books was ignited! Students were able to draw out their favorite cartoon characters, princesses, and superheroes and put them on the pages of their books. Students did a spectacular job with their illustrations for their books! In other 218 news, our kindergarteners have been BIG on sports! All the friends have taken an interest in baseball, soccer, basketball and football! They have been going out to the field and playground to get active with sports as well as enjoy their outside play time!
Room 218
We want to congratulate our kindergarteners on a successful year and wish you all the best with your new adventures in first grade! We have shared many memories this year and grew a lot. It has been a great and very memorable year. We wish all the parents and our friends a safe and FUN summer!

Hi everyone!
We are wrapping up a fun school year and it is hard to believe how many changes happened during the school year. Thank you to all of our amazing students for being resilient and to our parents and families for being so flexible and supportive throughout it all!
Our students have had a lot of fun this year. They have learned different cooking recipes in Smart Cookies, how to film and act in Cinema Kidz as well as draw and animate. They have learned to dance and different dance techniques in Mini Movers. They’ve become engineers in lego club and DEILAB, as well as the Jewelry making club. They’ve been world travelers and have been to many countries in Mr. Ethan’s World Travelers club; learning about Japan, India, Mexico, Italy, and more! They have become great at working together, solving problems, and cooperating together.
Our 3-6th grade students have really enjoyed watching the Girls Basketball Team and Ms. Nicole coach them. They are the best cheering squad and some of them have learned a little bit on how to keep score. It has been a lot of fun. Take a look at a few more fun pictures of what our students have been doing this year!
We have used our imaginations and have gotten our creative juices flowing during all of our art clubs. Students have become artists and learned so much in Art in Spanish, Gardening and Art club, Pokemon Art club and Art from the Heart club. Our Gardening club has learned about flowers, vegetables, and other plants. They have planted seeds and hope to see some growth over the next couple of weeks.

Hello Families!
Warmer weather has arrived and we are excited to incorporate outdoor activities into our program. So far session three has been jam packed with clubs, art projects, reading and a variety of interesting activities. As a collective group here at Community School’s we continue to create a safe, fun and educational program where children and staff can grow and learn together!
Pre-K/ K
Our Pre-K buddies have used this time to study healthy eating habits, yoga and outdoor activities. They have become experts on healthy habits by reading books during circle time and engaging in hands-on activities. They even got to make their own applesauce! Another way Ms.Latifa teaches healthy lifestyle habits is through yoga/ meditation. This type of exercise is good for both physical and mental health using breathing techniques, coordination and balance. Art in Spanish also continues to be an exciting club that sparks the curiosity of the kindergarten.
Grade 1
Our First Grade friends have been continuing to express interest in Ms. Veronica’s space club. Ms. Veronica has jam packed space kids with different and innovative activities and creations every week. One being balloon rockets were made to be a race against “time” and classmates! Art projects have also sparked their creative minds, the kids express themselves through Art in Spanish and free drawing.
As a group we’ve also been spending loads of time outside enjoying the nice weather and being very active!
Grades 2nd-5th
Our 2-5 kiddos have been introducing outdoor activities to their daily schedule. We are taking advantage of the nice weather by doing homework and reading outside every Tuesday. This new addition to our schedule allows the older kids to enjoy the weather, while being productive and reaching their homework goals. It also allows the after school teachers the opportunity to engage with students on the playground through play based learning. This group also seized the occasion of great weather through planting marigolds, sunflowers and columbine flowers. This project was a great way to teach them gentleness, patience and responsibility among other qualities.

Hi Families and Friends!!
Happy May!!
We hope you have been enjoying this beautiful May!! We are in the home stretch of the school year Woo Hoo!! We have been celebrating the beautiful weather and fingers crossed this weather continues into June! Clubs have been going really well and we are thoroughly enjoying our time with outside providers and our After School teachers. We are also welcoming a new teacher to After School, Rodrigo!! Rodrigo is a West Somerville Alum and is excited to be back and spend time with the current students! He will be assisting Ms. Seana with our 3rd-5th grade students so please stop by and say hello!
Our Pre-K kiddos have been enjoying all the time outside that they can get!! Ms.Jane has kept them very busy with lots of activities such as; dance parties, yoga, arts and crafts and much more! Remember that every Thursday is Show and Tell so bring an item or a story that you would like to share and be ready to see some really cool Show and Tell stuff!
Our K-2nd grade friends have also been enjoying playing outside and all of their club activities!
We have introduced 30 minutes of optional computer time on Fridays to play some math and learning games online which our students are loving!!
All of our clubs are going great!
This month our K-2 friends had to say goodbye to Ms. Christine as she embarks on a new career path and we will miss her terribly!
The 3rd-5th graders have been very busy between clubs, playing four square and magic card duels but loving every minute of it! Some of our clubs this session include Art and Spanish, Dei Lab, Strong Women Strong Girls and Origami Economy! If you haven't heard from them, they have become the new J.K Rollings of WSNS. Currently in Film club, they came up with an idea of creating their own Wizard movie that takes place here at West Somerville. After many weeks I can confirm that on opening day we will reach at least 1,000,000 tickets sold. Make sure to ask to be on the V.I.P list for the premier.
We want to THANK all of our staff for the great job they did in this school year 2021-2022. Thank you for the help and support you gave our students at all times!
