Hello Families!
It has been a snowy and cold few weeks! We’ve had our fair share of fun out in the snow, with snow days included! Our students have enjoyed playing outside and building mini structures in the snow. Here at AFAS, we have gotten into the routine of our new and old Session 2 clubs. We have also been lucky to start having more light outside in the playground and the opportunity to keep playing outside for longer periods of time! There are also starting to be a couple of “warm” days where our students can fully enjoy playing outside while the rest of the snow melts.
Our PreK students have enjoyed an ocean theme for this month! They read The Rainbow Fish with Ms. Mandee and made their own rainboWfishes in the class! They have also been exploring different colors and have worked on other fun projects to explore different combinations of colors. Group 1 has enjoyed walks to the library where they are able to choose their own books to look through and have Ms. Mandee read out loud to them! Our PreK were also able to work on their own science experiment as they combined shaving cream, glue, and food coloring to create puffy paint pictures!
Our K-2nd grade students have been very busy in their clubs! In Future Artist’s club, our students worked on kind valentine’s day cards to give each other and their families. In Farrington Nature, our students were able to go outside and explore the snow and learn about different conservation ideas they can do at home! In Weird Science club, our students worked on making volcanoes in the snow and exploding them outside. They also worked on learning about density and how different liquids have different levels of density. In Lego challenge, our students created replicas of some of the most well known flowers and showed off their creativity and imagination!
Our 3rd-5th grade students have been enjoying the Session 2 clubs as well! In Weird Science club, they tested out their engineering skills as they built their own catapults. They tested out different objects to launch with their catapults and observed which objects flew farther and which objects just dropped when flung. This year, our 3rd-5th graders have also been very into Connect Four challenges with each other! In previous years we’ve been dominated by chess, rubiks cubes, and even beyblade tournaments! This year, it is ALL about Connect Four and outsmarting your opponent!

Hello Hawk families!
Our students have been hard at work this second session of clubs. We got to bring in some new providers and the students are truly enjoying the experience. New to us this session are 2 art clubs! Students have been using a variety of materials to explore the world of art. They have experimented with still life, drawing “bad” art, and learning about perspective to make some really cool aquarium pictures. Another new to us club is CinemaKidz where students are having SO much fun exploring the world of cinema. They have worked with green screens and collaborated together to come up with an awesome idea of a movie. We’ll have to stay tuned to discover what that idea is!
Finally, our younger group of K-2nd graders have been enjoying their time with our Mini Movers club. Mini Movers provides students with another opportunity for storytelling. Students read a story each week and then get the opportunity to act them out. We also had a few of our favorite clubs return this session. Miss Suri has been enjoying her time with students at MetroRock and tells us each week how awesome and quickly they are learning. We love seeing our students challenging themselves and climbing to new heights every day.
For our teacher-led clubs Mr. T and Mr. Henry are keeping students active! In karaoke club, kids have gotten the chance to familiarize themselves with the karaoke machine and perform songs of their choosing. Additionally, students have been keeping plenty active, as many choose to dance along to their classmates’ lovely singing!
We also got to welcome back KidStock for another session of more story acting. Students have been getting very engaged in the creative process of acting out a story and ideas are constantly being spewed. Chef Michael is back this session and has unfortunately only seen our friends a few times due to snow storms interrupting our routine. Students have been enjoying the quesadillas and the delicious brownie cookies they got to make so far.
In film critics club, we watched “Inside Out,” a movie that tells the story of a child as she manages different emotions. We discussed how Riley, the movie’s protagonist, had many different feelings all at once. Students learned that it is ok to experience several emotions at the same time, and we discussed strategies on what to do in those situations.
In Master of Games, students have been introduced to new games and problem solving strategies. From chess, to Uno, to Scrabble, students are being exposed to a wide range of games. Throughout the club, students are learning how to win gracefully and how to respond appropriately when losing. Additionally, students are learning new strategies to familiar games from their peers.
In Imagination playground we worked together as a group to build a house and to build the Eiffel tower. In master of games we learned the different strategies in chess and in Harry Potter monopoly. In Around the World we learned about the carnival in Brazil and the students made their cariño al face masks. In perler beads they are making their own design such as creating cats out beads. In just dance this week they are dancing to Spanish music from just dance.
Master Chefs club has learned all about the wonderful ways bell peppers, blueberries, broccoli, cantaloupe and cucumber are good for us. Students have used a new fruit or vegetable each week to create delicious recipes including Garden Ratatouille, Berry Yogurt crunch, Rockin’ Broccoli Salad, Melon Fruit Salad and Apple and Cucumber Salad. One week Miss O forgot to go to the grocery store so instead of making food we got to do a food art craft and made our very own buttered popcorn buckets! Our little STEAMers club has had a ton of fun exploring engineering, coding and magnets. We worked in teams to make aluminum foil boats, we used binary code to solve a puzzle to color pictures and we got to make magnetic slime!
Miss Suri and our PreK friends have been thoroughly enjoying the snow. Students have enjoyed playing in the snow during their recess time. We also took advantage of the snow for some fun art activities. Students took jars of paint and went wild painting beautiful patterns and designs on the snow in the front of the school. We received many compliments from teachers the next day. We also explored creating art with salt and water colors. Students have continued to work with their letters exploring U and V. We made beautiful unicorns and umbrellas. We turned our letter V into a giant volcano that had lowercase v’s as lava. Students were introduced to “The Purple People Eater” through a conversation about the color violet. We used our hands to make our very own purple people eaters.
As always the after-school staff at the Healey appreciate all of your patience and kind words that have been offered to us. A reminder that pick-up is between 5:10-5:30 and please remember to check your balances on EZChildtrack.

SPOTLIGHT ON CLUBS
GAMEMAKERS
Every Friday our 3-5 graders work on new and exciting games. Our future game designers work with cardboard, magnets, clay, and lots of recycled materials. They started in January and are now inviting “game testers” from the k-2 grade groups. Do these games look familiar? Many of them are based off video game and classic board games! This group is excited to take the gamemakers club to a whole new level when spring time hits. They may even create large scale games to play outside! This awesome club was created by Mr. Will, one of the lead teachers for SCS. He is also a prolific artist as well as an educator for SCALE.
Happy February! The season of hearts and good feelings. Here at the Brown we are sending the love out to all our sister schools! We have friends all over the city who we get to see at February Camp and we can’t wait to meet them! Our community is a lot more connected when we come together. Though not everyone comes to camp, we see each other at different programs throughout the city too! Here’ is a shout out to all our awesome networks that connect the students of Somerville!
BINGO
Oh the thrill of a good bingo game! In this club the kiddos get their own score cards and cubes to play the classic game of bingo. Ms. Marie calls out a number and the kiddos look on their board to see if they have the number. Sometimes she’ll call out a letter and a number and they’ll have to trace to find the number in the column with the letter. This is number and letter recognition with the suspense of a game.
I think the big hit is using the cool colored blocks and or markers :) Sometimes the group plays to get all in a row, blackout, four corners, or box. The best part, is when you get to yell, “BINGO!”
LET’S BUILD IT
In this club we build lots of objects out of, objects! And some of those buildable objects are dominos, cards, linq-n-logs, legos, stuff around the room, etc. First Ms. Kelli gives the group a challenge then they work with the materials she gives them. Fostering little engineers starts with fun challenges like this. Build bridges and structures with cards! Here they constructed a stable house of cards supported by the beam of the school. They managed to stack and build it further throughout the club time. Not your typical house of cards!
YOGA
Another popular club! These kiddos are all about downward dog. Before club, we turn the artroom/music room/ afterschool room into a yoga studio. All the kiddos come in, push the desks to a corner and prepare for some asana poses. They’ll remove their shoes, go to their spot on the rug and wait for yoga to begin. What better way to un-wind from the long school day, than doing a few relaxing poses. If you ask me, their best pose is childs pose.

This month we have been very busy finding ways to make sure students have fun indoors as it is still winter, but we do take advantage of the days where the weather is beautiful to take them outside and play. Kindergarten through 2nd grade students are exploring their new inside environments, working on fun arts and crafts, science and many different STEM projects. We have activities based on books read to the kindergarteners such as The Mitten, The Hat, Wake up Groundhog, and Be Kind that helped brighten our bulletin board. The 1st and 2nd graders have focused on making special cards for their friends and families, while others made friendship bracelets, art pieces, and playing their favorite sports in the gym! Groups have continued to have fun outside as the sun is starting to set a little bit later on in the day; the students have also been able to stay outside for longer periods!
Hello Families!
We have had a great start in after school for February! It may be cold outside, but the students are really having it up with their learning, exploring, and overall having fun in clubs and all the activities.
At East, we show one another how to be kind and how to support one another. Students have also been making different scenarios using fresh fruit!
Our 3rd-5th grade students have also been learning to see their interests and strength by connecting with one another, having conversations, and sharing their thoughts and ideas on different topics in groups with teachers about love, friendship, and kindness. We have been learning about how to be super friends to one another by using kind words, helping each other in a different way, and respect the point of view of others and taking turns.
Important Reminder:
Please do so each day. Dress up your child appropriately for the outdoor weather and think how cold it can get. Snow pants, winter boots, gloves, and hats are the best way to stay warm.
They also, have learned all things about winter including winter weather, and arctic animals. We learned about Penguins and Polar bears. Penguins are flightless seabirds that live almost exclusively below the equator and how their bodies stay warm due to their insulating layers of blubber, which lies just beneath the skin.
Students were very interested in facts, asking questions about why polar bears, are opposites! Mr. Ray explained that in Greek Arctic means bear while the Antarctic means the opposite of Arctic or opposite of bear. That is why polar bears and penguins will never meet as they are found in the north while penguins are found in the south. They are literally on opposite sides of the earth!

During February, our themes have been Chinese New Year and Friendship. We have read numerous books about each theme, and have done crafts related to the themes.
To learn about Chinese New Year, we read books about Chinese customs and did activities like making dragon puppets and paper lanterns.
For our Friendship theme, we are reading stories from the Yoko and Friends series and stories about Valentine’s Day such as Franklin’s Valentine, and Little Bear’s Valentine. We are making Friendship Bracelets and Valentine’s Cards.
As usual, our thematic material was generously punctuated by plenty of play in the gym, in room 108, and outdoors, weather permitting.
Room 202
Hello families!
This month we have been keeping very busy with many fun themed activities.
We started the month off with learning about groundhogs in honor of Groundhog Day. The children then participated in a groundhog art project. We started with making our own predictions on if the groundhog will see its shadow or not. Then the class made groundhog crowns and “pop-up” groundhogs using a cup and popsicle sticks!
Other themes we explored included shapes, friendship, and movement! During our shape week, the children identified various shapes and used them to create things such as boats, houses, and even a fish. The children all worked so wonderfully on their shape creations! For our friendship week, we got pretty crafty with art activities and made love bugs and friendship cards for friends. With the lingering snow mounds from our last blizzard on our playground, we haven’t been outside much. As our movement alternative, we have been going to the gym and playing games like Fishy Fishy- Cross My Ocean, Mr. Fox, and Freeze Tag.
We look forward to sharing all the fun things we do in March in our next newsletter!
Until next time…!
Room 137
Hello families,
The month of February has been full of fun!
In our class we learned about Chinese New Year and one of our friends gifted all of us special red envelopes to celebrate!
We learned about penguins and explored the different foods that they eat and practiced even waddling like them. Now our class has mastered the penguin waddle!
When we got the chance, we went outside and played on the playground. We took with us some chalk and the children drew beautiful pictures.
We are continuing to enjoy spending time with each other and building friendships in our class.
We Love Afterschool!
Room 218
Room. 218 has been learning and practicing kindness! In our kindergarten class, we have implemented “100 Acts of Kindness.” Whenever a friend demonstrates an act of kindness, we will document it on our chart and when we reach 100, the class will be rewarded with a special prize! We have already seen so much kindness in our class. Some examples are: friends helping each other out with activities and while playing during choice time or gym time! They also have been greeting each other everyday with kind words and actions. Kindergarten has also been working on a special project that will be going out to parents on Monday, February 14th! Stay tuned, Room. 218 sends everyone in the community schools newsletter a happy February!!

Hello everyone and Happy February!!
We have been having so much fun in our clubs this session. Students have enjoyed learning a variety of new things and engaging in fun and exciting activities. We are also enjoying the fact that the days are getting longer in no time at all we will be back to dismissing outside and in the front of the school! (be on the lookout for communication from Ms. Alison in the next month when this change will occur! Until then, take a look at some fun things our different clubs have been doing! )
In science club we have been getting our hands dirty making volcanoes and planets out of paper mache! Everyone worked hard on their replicas even if they thought the paper mache goop felt funny on their hands!
During Half day Wednesdays students have the opportunity for a lot of time to build and create different lego structures. This is a bunker made by one of our 4th graders. It really is amazing to see what these children create!
Here we have a few 2nd grade friends hanging out, taking a break from some fun gym time. I thought they looked great so I had to snap a picture!!
Students work together in the board games club to build this tree structure as tall as they possibly could! Cooperation and teamwork is always so great to see. Some of the games the students play are great for dealing with and learning about winning and losing and how to do it gracefully and not boastfully. I’m glad they are able to work on these skills in after school!
Three of our 3rd grade students worked on this comic during their free time and put it all together. They were really proud of it and honestly it was really neat to see them all work together and come up with this all on their own without being prompted! Way to go boys!
Last but not least for this month, students in the Cinema Kidz club are working hard learning about filming, acting, how to put a movie together, and working on the greenscreen. This has definitely been a hit as a new club for our school this session. We look forward to welcoming this club back next session!
