Hello Families! Happy Holidays!
We have officially finished Session 1! Woohoo! We are so excited to have made it through our first session clubs with all of the last minute changes! Thank you to everyone for your continued patience and support during this session. Our students have enjoyed every club this session and are excitedly looking forward to new choices in Session 2. While the weather has gotten much colder, we have enjoyed a couple of warmer days this month and have taken advantage of them with extended outdoor playtime. With the sun setting so early, we try to play outside as much as we can before the sun sets and we are back indoors!
As we finish up our clubs this Session, our kids have been enjoying practicing all that they’ve learned! In Parkour, they have been able to learn how to safely climb and jump off of everyday structures. It’s a great way to learn control of our bodies and get some fun exercise. In Lego Challenge, our K-2nd graders finished off the club with a fun sports logo challenge! Our students made awesome creations of the Green Bay Packers and of the Patriots logos! It was fun to see the different teams that were represented in the last challenge. In Drawing Club, our students ended the activities by drawing their own gingerbread houses and then decorating them. It was a lot of fun to see the different houses! In our Passport to Fun club, our students said goodbye to our teacher, Ms. Rachel, by making awesome holiday sugar cookies and decorating them in creative ways! Our students also made fun trees out of brown paper bags and decorated them as well in Earth Love club.
Our 3rd-5th graders said goodbye to MetroRock club with a last fun climbing party! It has been so much fun to be able to offer Metro Rock this session and see our students enjoy themselves! We also took advantage of the warmer days to go outside after hw time and play some soccer on the playground! In Smart Cookies club, our students were able to bring their booklets home and practice the recipes they have been learning all session!

We’ve finally made it to the end of 2021. Thank you all for your continued trust and support of our program, we are lucky to have families as wonderful as all of you. We have had such a fun start to our school year and are already looking forward to being back from winter break.
In master of games we are focusing on different strategies in uno. Miss O was witness to students using such strategies they’ve learned to beat Mr. Henry in the first round of several games. Students were quick to learn placing which cards down would be most beneficial to them in their conquest to win. In creative writing the students are writing their final drafts of their book and drawing pictures for the stories. We will be sending our completed manuscript out for publishing over winter break. In soccer and nutrition the kids talked about the food pyramids and the different kinds of healthy fruits and vegetables there are. Students also had their last soccer game using all the strategies that they learned.
Our students in clubs spent this last week wrapping up their clubs for the first session. We’ve enjoyed soccer, kidstock, metrorock, Haitian dance, veggie circus, smart cookies and farrington nature. Each class has sent us home with new skills and a love of a variety of topics. Mr. Henry’s clubs have been hard at work this last week. Perler beads has continued their focus on winter themed design. We’ve seen creations from just winter colored shapes to stockings and snowmen.
In Mr. T’s clubs students are expanding their knowledge on a wide range of topics. In Newspaper club students have gotten the chance to experience different types of journalism throughout this session. Early on, we focused on writing articles about the cafeteria food and the new playground. Students came into other classes to offer interviews and have the students body voices documented. We ended the year with our own mock “news broadcast” where students took on different roles such as anchor, sports reporter, etc. Miss O got to sit in and watch some of our takes and was very impressed with the “professionalism” students displayed on screen. Students have understood the importance of being unbiased when reporting and the need to stick to the facts.
Miss Suri’s friends have been continuing their work with letters focusing on N, M and H. We made nests for our colorful birds. We also helped our little n get ready for nighttime. We got all sorts of mixed up monster body parts that we got to use to create our very own monsters. Friends got very excited when they learned they were going to turn the little M into minions. We had bright yellow minions and so many rainbow minions. Our last week before break we are going to be making holiday cards for the staff in the building to send well wishes to everyone before break. Our kindergarteners are getting excited to move to the big kid room and join clubs next session.
In Around the world club students have gotten a taste of different cultures and the holidays celebrated around the world. We wrap up this last week reviewing all that we have learned and discussing what one specific tradition stood out to them. Finally, all semester long students have worked on their very own stories in Creative Writing. We began the year learning what a good introduction paragraph looks like, and throughout the session we have extensively reviewed the writing process and the importance of going back to edit. This week, students will submit final drafts and get the chance to become published authors!
As a reminder, our registration for next school year will be approaching fast after winter break so please keep an eye out for dates and announcements. Please continue to check your balances on EZchildtrack and a reminder that pick-up between 5:00-5:30 is ideal. We hope you all have a relaxing and safe holiday season, whichever holidays you celebrate, and look forward to starting 2022 with you all by our side.

December is our favorite month. The kids are excelling in their clubs, they are used to the routines and have begun to understand what it means to be in afterschool. We had a mini snow fall that coated the school yard, not enough for snow sculptures, but soon!
As we finish the fall session I want to share some of the highlights and insights to these groups.
The first and second graders hold a special spot in my heart. Last year they had us as their in-person teachers for a while, not to say we aren’t enough, but in my opinion, it takes a whole school and a neighborhood to round out a kid. I’m so proud of their adaptability and flexibility, I know they get it from you, dear readers. This group took on this first session with grace and curiosity. Already they are excited to be leaders and big kids. They made galaxies, slime, puppets, and learned some valuable dance moves. In the photo they are doing their relaxing meditation after dancing for 40 mins straight!
Our K students learned so much. Ms. Marie and Ms. Grace taught them how to get in line, be prepared for a fire drill, how to use scissors, and how to share stories about their day. I’m so happy these kids get a chance to be in person and learn these skills. Everyday a new opportunity to learn comes up. These kiddos played soccer, learned how to play heads up seven up, danced, colored, and listened to our big kids read stories to them. Here is a photo of them working together with an LIT (leader in training). We are excited to see what they will learn next session!
The perler masters, Inventors, webmasters, that’s what I am calling this group of 3-5th graders. This session they created their own website, created 3D perler crafts, and designed dioramas about climate change. They are very clever and hands on! They also are the most down to earth sweet helpers. All of them have helped out with the Leaders In Training one way or another. They’ve helped our K-2 students get to class, finish art projects, organize choice time, and most of the time- be a buddy to a kiddo. What warms our hearts is seeing this relationship continue into the day school. They really are a great group of kiddos.
One of my favorite games they like to play is Among us. I know what you're thinking, that's a computer game. Well, last year they created the game to work outside. They still play it! It is great to see them engaged and creating all new games. That's why, next session, we are excited to see what they come up with in Gamemakers! Below is a photo of them playing at Albion Park. Being cool on the beesaw.
Thank you so much for supporting Somerville Community Schools and it’s educators. Have a safe holiday and may it bring you joy and hope for the coming new year!

Seasonal Greetings from everyone at East Somerville Community School!
Session one of clubs has come to an end and we have already made so many memories in our program. Everyone did an amazing job and can’t wait for the next session to start! We hope everyone enjoyed their first session of clubs and we look forward to offering you some new and exciting activities next year.
All of our enrichment clubs have been enjoying end-of-session activities. Next week, we will be doing holiday-related activities, and we look forward to the beginning of our next session on January 3rd. Our clubs will range from old standards like Metro Rock, DEILAB, and Smart Cookies while incorporating new activities like High Tech 2.0, Just Dance under the Sea, Cultural Art Creation, and Art with Fruit, Gym Class Hero, Show and Tell, Shape Craft etc.
We would like to send out a HUGE thank you to all East Staff, our providers, families, students, Community Schools staff for supporting our program and helping us make the Afterschool an exciting, beneficial, magical and safe place to be for all of our students! We are grateful for the support you have shown us over the years.

Thank you!
We can’t wait to see you all after the break. We wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday!
While the chilly and rainy weather limits the amount, we can go outside, our creative students and teachers are finding tons of fun things to do inside. From reading stories out loud, sing-a-longs, homework and fun friendly games of four corners, we’ve experienced all the fun one can have indoors!
As the cold weather has arrived, we would like to stress the importance of students wearing the appropriate winter outerwear.
Students should come to school wearing a winter jacket, gloves, scarves, hats, winter boots, etc.
Please discuss with your child the need to wear jackets. Winter outerwear should not be removed when it is cold outside
Students will not be allowed to go outside if they are not wearing outerwear appropriate for the weather. A sweatshirt or hooded shirt is not considered appropriate outerwear for the cold weather.

Room 202
Happy December everyone! Here in room 202, we have been spending a lot of time outdoors.
For the past few weeks, we have been focussing on the weather. For arts and crafts activities related to the weather, each student made a cloud, a sun and a weather wheel. The children enjoyed these activities. Before that, we learned a bit about dinosaurs and did some interesting activities like “Baby Dinosaurs in an Egg”, “T- Rex Craft” and “Dig for Dinosaurs.”
Currently, we are learning about various careers such as police officers, doctors and construction workers. Some examples of current projects are a “Crossing Guard Stop Sign” a “Police Officer Craft.”
We wish everyone a happy holiday season and a Happy New Year!
Room 108
Since Thanksgiving, first we learned a little bit about birds, and then we have been learning about different cultures around the world, what they eat, how they dress, what they do for fun, and how they celebrate at this time of year. The basic idea we convey is that it is dark and cold at this time of year and so many cultures have celebrations involving lights. We also try to give the message that celebrations can help people feel better at this dark and cold time of the year. In our readings, we have explored the celebrations of a variety of belief systems including Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism.
Room 137
Hello December!
The weather has been chilly, but that has not stopped us from going outside and enjoying outdoor activities like playing in the playground, using the playground structures and collecting and sorting rocks and sticks.
In the classroom, we are doing Yoga, drawing and our dramatic play area has really stolen the hearts of our little ones!
We are doing a variety of festive activities including singing seasonal songs like jingle bells and “Frosty the Snowman,” making paper chains as described in our reading about China, making snowflakes, and snowy tree scenes.
We would also like to remind parents that if it snows, we would like to go outside in the snow, so please send gloves and boots so your children can have fun in the snow. They love the snow, and are so excited for us to take them outside to play in the snow!
Room 218
Room 218 has been feeling the holiday spirit! We made turkeys with our names on them, finished up our fall coloring books and picked out our favorite page.
Shea and Jackson did an excellent job reading “Good Boy, Fergus!” to the class while their classmates paid close attention.
We are currently making holiday gifts for our parents! Shhh!!
We hope everyone has a great holiday season. We will see you all back in January!

Hi everyone!
Happy December. It is so hard to believe that we have made it to the end of the year 2021. In just a few days we’ll be celebrating the New Year with the hope of bigger and better things on the horizon.
We have really enjoyed ourselves this session and are looking forward to wrapping things up with all of our clubs for 2021.
Below you’ll find some fun pictures and recaps of some of our clubs and grade level activities!
Our Veggie Circus club- slowly becoming a fan favorite has been having so much fun lately. You’ll see in these pictures here that they do fun and kind of silly things in their club which is great to see the kids so creative and engaged, smiling and laughing!
Our go- to activities this session when we have free time or downtime has been playing with legos and creating really neat fuse bead masterpieces. The attention to detail it takes for the fuse beads and creativity it takes for legos really come through in their final works of art. Take a look at some of these!
Our Pre-K students have been having a great time with Ms. Dana and our new teacher Ms. Savannah. For those of you that don’t know, Ms. Dana is actually one of the supervisors for the after school program but she graciously gave her time to our Kennedy pre-k after school students because we didn’t have a teacher. Now that we have Ms. Savannah, Dana will be phasing out from working with our pre-k students every day but she will visit every now and then. We will miss Ms. Dana a lot but we’re looking forward to having Ms. Savannah work with our youngest students in the program.
Lastly, our Kidstock! Theatre club has been having a great time this session learning about improv, acting stories out, creating their own plays and more. Here they are playing a fun game with their teacher- outside provider Ms. Katrina.
Metro Rock - rock climbing off-site has been a major hit! The kids have learned a lot and grown as climbers. They have tested their own limits and reservations and pushed past them. Some have earned the “junior rock climber” card which they were very proud of. They also have participated in a ropes course at rock climbing too!
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and restful break. We are looking forward to seeing you all in 2022!
As always, please feel free to ask me any questions you may have. Be on the lookout for emails from me in early January about registration for next school year as well!

Hellos Families!
We cannot believe it is almost winter break already! Our students have been anxiously awaiting the snow and all the fun it will bring. We have all been enjoying some of our favorite clubs including Haitian Creole Dancing, Art in Spanish and Reading Club. So far the weather has been in our favor and we have also got to spend our last few days outside while the light lasts!
Pre K/ K
Ms. Latifa/Ms. Ari
Our Pre-K and Kindergarten have been focusing on Social Emotional Learning with Mr. Z. Ms. Latifa is leading engaging activities such as, cup stacking, costumes galore and some very calming yoga! The Kindergarten are also joining the 1st grade in clubs that always lead to lots of giggles and smiles.
Grades 2nd-5th
Ms. Yolking
Our older students have been working hard on lots of bigger projects. During Lego Club they crafted entire Lego cities! Ms. Yolking is ALWAYS thinking of unique crafts that get the kids working together such as painting (with glitter) their dream snow day based on the book ‘The Snowy Winter Day. I would say Let’s Read Club was a hit this session!
Grade 1
Ms. Deijah/Ms. Alaa
Our First Grade kiddos have been having the time of their lives in all their clubs. During Just Do It, they’ve practiced their stretching as well as their dance skills during some musical hula hoops! In Lego Club our friends have mastered making Beyblades with legos, which resulted in endless race battles. Though, nothing can top their all-time favorite, choice stations!

Hello Families!
Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year!
Well hello, there families, and friends! Welcome back to our Monthly Newsletter, and how I am excited to give you an update on how we are doing. We are in our fourth month of afterschool, and we are about to finish our 2021 year with a strong and positive attitude. WSNS afterschool has been growing every day and not just by students but by creating a healthy strong community and family. For the past couple of months the afterschool team has been connecting with one another by doing activities to connect with each other. Our weekly talent show to see what we want to share with each other. Creating stories and memories with one another to end this hectic year.
As per usual, our little friends have been getting taller and taller throughout the weeks. By the upcoming year, they might be just as tall as our teachers. As you know, Ms. Jane & Ms. Darley have been teaching our friends about healthy eating and healthy mindsets. Ms. Jane decided to have our pre k- K have their very own little pizza party. I promise, right after eating all those carbs, our friends decided to have their own mini yoga session. I was not sure if everyone was informed but we have new members joining our team, I just wanted everyone to welcome them whenever you see them hiding. They are our new favorite’s pets which have been rescued the shelter (Target). We have our own fox and Corgi. We do not yet have their names but will soon.
Now you know we cannot forget our slightly older friends. Our 1st – 2nd graders have been having an amazing time coming from Soccer, cooking with Chef Michael, or even having an undefeated record in connect 4. That right you read it correctly get your tickets as soon as possible. We have our very first pay per view coming up. This event will take place in the cafeteria at 4:30 eastern time. Our 56-0 champion who goes by the name Notorious Rock star. Our friends have been holding their own record for connect 4 and it has been a challenge. So far, no teacher won and our first graders hold the record with the most wins. Sometimes when we are not trying to break records we are enjoying our time in clubs with our teachers Mr. K and Ms. Vanessa. Sometimes during arts and craft, we want to be creative and let our minds wonder. That is exactly what we did, you hear the phrase think outside of the box, but we decided to create a new phrase. “Every time you are stuck in a box smile and break out of it.”

It is our final introduction for our older kids. Keeping up with the 3rd-5th and mentors. On today’s episode we will be discussing about how our friends have been doing amazing, They are always on top of their homework, that could be either finishing their math packet or English packet, Begin their reading or even just have a mini hangout session with all their friends. Once they have finished their homework they begin their huge tournament. It is like super bowl but for Magic the gathering, the winner gets bragging rights for only 5 minutes, or until the next tournament. If we are not doing Magic, we are joining our clubs. For our clubs some have inspired to create the world better by making reachable cars out of Lego that can save our planet one day. If not Legos then you know we are doing our own version of High School Musical.
