DJ Mixer

Procedure

1. Recap the last activity and have students log in to Scratch [if they have an account].

2. Watch Video 1 and Video 2 [see below].

   1. • Video 2: Students learn about how DJs use a consistent sound or repeating musical loop that underlies the entire track, then insert and play other sounds over that track. Students should choose a Music Loop, rather than a shorter sound.

      • Make sure students choose the "play sound until done" block instead of the "play sound" block. If the DJ mixer's sound stutters or does not play, check for the "play sound until done" block in the member's code

3. Check in with students as they complete their projects. Invite students to present their screen and share what challenges they have experienced while coding. Ask others to share how they overcame those obstacles.

4. Watch Video 3: Students learn about how DJs use a consistent sound or repeating musical loop that underlies the entire track, then insert and play other sounds over that track. Students should choose a Music Loop, rather than a shorter sound.

5. Watch Video 4: Students often have problems changing the variable into a slider control. Remind them to double click the variable to make the slider.

   1. • Students may be confused by setting up the variable where the speed = variable/10, so be ready to help them with this step.

      • Students may choose Add-ons to enhance their project.

6. Instruct students to share their project in Scratch.

7. Discuss the activity and facilitate a brief discussion about what students learned and experienced.

• Question 1: What was your favorite sound you used for this activity?

• Question 2: Can anyone tell me what a variable is? How did you use a variable in your project?

• Question 3: What block did you use to make the music play continuously?
