Who is it for?
Check-in/Check-out (CICO) can be customized for any age. It is most commonly used in elementary and middle school.
What is it?
With a Check-in/Check-out (CICO) system, the student will check-in at the beginning of the day with a specific person, check-in throughout the day with their teachers, and check-out with a designated person at the end of the school day. With CICO, not only are behavior goals targeted, but the student has the opportunity to get support and positive attention throughout the day.
How does it work?
Determine the behavior goals for the student and the percentage of points necessary for success. Keep in mind that it is better to start with success (i.e., lower percentage required) and build up from there.
At the start of each day, the student checks in with an adult who provides a point card, engages in a positive conversation, ensures the student is ready, and addresses any potential issues.
After each class, the student and teacher briefly discuss the student’s behavior during that period, and the teacher rates the student on the point card based on specific behavior goals that relate to school and class expectations.
At the end of the day, the student checks out with a designated adult. They can reflect on positive achievements for the day and also discuss strategies to improve next time. The student’s points are then totaled and can be used to select rewards from an incentive menu.
If parents or caregivers are involved, the point card is sent home to be signed and returned the next morning.
