If the student has an IEP or 504 plan, it is vital that all listed accommodations are implemented with fidelity. If a student is unable to access the general curriculum, this barrier can potentially lead to challenging behavior. Accommodation should be specific for the student, environment, and task.
For example, a student may be unable to read and follow printed directions due to a vision impairment, a specific learning disability such as dyslexia, or other health impairment, such as ADHD. While the barrier is the same, the accommodations for each student need to address the underlying cause, whether it is a struggle to see the words, decode the words, or focus on the words. Accommodation should lessen the effect of the disability, not lower the expectations for learning.
Print disabilities due to physical, cognitive, or sensory disability. Accommodation should allow students to access information without requiring them to visually read standard print.
