Data Vampires: Going Hyperscale (Episode 1) Tech Won't Save Us, OCT 2024, Paris Marx. Silicon Valley wants to shape our future, but why should we let it? Every Thursday, Paris Marx is joined by a new guest to critically examine the tech industry, its big promises, and the people behind them. Tech Won’t Save Us challenges the notion that tech alone can drive our world forward by showing that separating tech from politics has consequences for us all, especially the most vulnerable. It’s not your usual tech podcast.
Data Vampires: Opposing Data Centers (Episode 2) Tech Won't save Us, OCT 2024, Paris Marx. As hyperscale data centers move into communities, they come with significant water and energy demands that some are not willing to put up with. We go to Ireland, Spain, and Chile to learn about the effects of data centers on the ground and why some communities are fighting back. They’re asking whether the tradeoffs they’re being expected to make are really necessary. This is episode 2 of Data Vampires, a special four-part series from Tech Won’t Save Us.
Tech Won’t Save Us offers a critical perspective on tech, its worldview, and wider society with the goal of inspiring people to demand better tech and a better world. Support the show on Patreon.

The big environmental costs of big data for the internet June 22, 2024 PBS Newshour The rise of artificial intelligence is requiring faster and bigger computations for even simple tasks compared to, say, a Google search. It’s adding to the demand for more internet data centers, but these facilities come at a big environmental cost, especially for the communities that host them.
How Much Energy Does AI Need? June 4, 2024 Marcus by Goldman Sachs® On average, a ChatGPT query needs nearly 10 times as much electricity to process as a Google search. In that difference lies a coming sea change in how the US, Europe, and the world at large will consume power — and how much that will cost.

Warrenton town staff approves site plan for 220,000-square-foot Amazon data center project
by Grace Schumacher, FauquierNow, Apr 19, 2024
“I think it's peculiar that [the town] would have approved the site development plan just three or four days ahead of when they were going to have a work session on related topics with the Town Council,” said Kevin Ramundo, president of the nonprofit group Citizens for Fauquier County, echoing Protect Fauquier’s concerns. “From our point of view, it was entirely predictable that the town would approve the site development plan -- Amazon has been getting a pass on what it should be required to provide.”

Northern Virginia is again the No. 1 data center market, but challenges are mounting. The Northern Virginia data center market ended the year with 51 million square feet of gross operating data center space. That’s the equivalent of about eight Pentagons and almost 4,000 megawatts of inventory, a metric used to measure data center capacity. That requires enough electricity to power about 800,000 homes. That is three times the capacity of the world’s No. 2 data center market, Singapore. WTOP News Jeff Clabaugh jclabaugh@wtop.com March 18, 2024

The Belmont project’s proposed 4.8 million additional sq.ft. of data center bring with it a tremendous amount of problems that must be considered. For starters, the nearly-five million sq. ft. would make Belmont the second largest data center in the country. Regardless of any buffers or setbacks, a project this size would negatively impact many residents. There’s no denying its size and the impossible task of blending it into our community – by comparison, the largest office building in the world, the Pentagon, at six million square feet, is not much bigger than the Belmont deal.
