Dear Parents/Guardians,
For many years, the Davis School District has sought to meet the needs of gifted and talented elementary students through our full-time DEEP magnet (formerly PAL/Spectrum) classes. In an effort to continue to meet the needs of advanced learners, we will be piloting DEEP language arts and social studies classes at the junior high level during the 2024-25 school year. These classes will offer a rigorous, differentiated curriculum developed specifically for gifted and talented learners.
Identification
Students will be identified for participation in junior high language arts/social studies DEEP classes through multiple measures:
1. The Verbal portion of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
2. 2023-24 Language Arts RISE scores
3. Teacher survey
Students who are identified will be invited to participate in both DEEP pilot classes (both language arts and social studies.)
Testing
CogAT testing for DEEP will be done in conjunction with the testing for the 7th/8th accelerated math class. Students have three options for registering to take the CogAT test.
1. CogAT testing will be offered on specific dates in March at the sites of the current 6th grade full-time DEEP magnet classes: Burton Elementary, Centerville Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Valley View Elementary, and West Bountiful Elementary. Any sixth-grade students enrolled in those five schools interested in junior high DEEP and/or accelerated math will be tested at those locations during the school day.
2. CogAT testing will be administered at a central district testing location during the school day on select dates in March. Sixth grade students who are interested in junior high DEEP and/or accelerated math who are not enrolled in the five elementary schools listed above will be bused from their elementary school to the testing site during the school day, then taken back to the school after the test. The testing dates are tentatively scheduled for March 18, 19, 21, 25, and 28. District transportation will assign your child’s school to one of those specific dates which will then be communicated to you by your child’s elementary school.
3. Students may schedule a time to take the CogAT at the district testing center located at 70 E. 100 N., Farmington. You may sign up through the Bookings link included in the QR code below to choose a testing time from the available slots. Parents are required to provide transportation to the testing center for this option.
All students will be given all three sections of the CogAT. Students may be identified to participate in:
1.) DEEP language arts and social studies classes
2.) 7th/8th accelerated math
3.) both,
or 4.) neither.
The goal is to find the most appropriate educational placement for each student.
Junior High DEEP Pilot Locations
The three junior highs that will be magnet schools for piloting our DEEP language arts/social studies classes in the 2024-25 school year are West Point, Shoreline, and South Davis. Please note that parents will be responsible for providing transportation to and from the DEEP magnet location of their choice.
Students who are identified to participate in the junior high DEEP pilot whose boundary school is not one of the DEEP magnet locations will have three options:
1. Receive a program placement (no boundary permit request is necessary) to attend either West Point, Shoreline or South Davis full-time.
2. Attend the DEEP magnet school for all A-day classes and attend the boundary school for all B-day classes (or vice-versa, depending on the scheduled day for DEEP classes.)
3. Attend the DEEP magnet school only for DEEP language arts and social studies classes, which will be offered either 1st and 2nd period on A-day or 5th and 6th period on B-day. Attend the boundary school for all other classes.
If you are interested in having your child tested for identification for the junior high DEEP magnet classes and/or accelerated math, please fill out the form using the QR code below.
Forms must be submitted no later than Thursday, February 29th.
