Dear Parents/Guardians,
Davis School District strives to identify and support students in the most appropriate mathematics learning environment that will best meet their academic needs and give them an opportunity to be successful. This letter describes the mathematics options available to students entering seventh grade.
7th Grade Math
This is the course in which most seventh grade students will be enrolled, and it covers all of the seventh-grade math DESK standards.
7th Grade Math with Honors Designation
Students enrolled in the regular 7th Grade Math class may choose to add additional depth into concepts and enrichment opportunities. This is equivalent to taking 7th Grade Math Honors and will be reflected as such on the student’s transcript. The 7th Grade Math with Honors Designation is the best fit for students who are seeking a deep understanding of mathematics.
Accelerated 2-in-1 Math
This course covers all the 7th and 8th-grade math DESK standards in a single year and moves very fast with minimal repetition. Many junior highs, but not all, offer this accelerated course. Acceleration is intended to provide an opportunity to take additional college-level math courses in high school and is not for additional rigor. Students who enroll in the accelerated course as a seventh grader are still required to earn three credits of math while in high school to fill requirements in mathematics for graduation.
**Please note that offering the Accelerated 2-in-1 Math course at Kaysville Jr. High is dependent on the number of students who qualify for the class and choose to take it.
Placement in the accelerated course will be determined by the student’s junior high school and students must receive a 90% or higher on the CogAT placement test. Students have a possibility of three options to take this test. Once school registration is complete counselors will provide you with links for the options below.
1. STUDENTS CURRENTLY AT A 6th GRADE DEEP MAGNET SCHOOL: CogAT testing will be offered on specific dates in March at the sites of our current 6th grade full-time DEEP magnet classes: Burton Elementary, Centerville Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Valley View Elementary, and West Bountiful Elementary. Any sixth-grade students enrolled in those five schools who are interested in junior high DEEP and/or accelerated math will be tested at those locations during the school day.
2. DISTRICT SCHOOL DAY TESTING: CogAT testing will be offered during the school day at a central district testing location on select dates in March. Sixth-grade students who are interested in junior high DEEP and/or accelerated math who are not enrolled in the five elementary schools listed above will be bused from their elementary school to the testing site during the school day, then taken back to the school after the test. The testing dates are tentatively scheduled for March 18, 19, 21, 25, and 28. District transportation will assign your child’s school to one of those specific dates which will then be communicated to you by your child’s elementary school.
3. DISTRICT TESTING CENTER: If you would like to schedule a time to take the CogAT at the district testing center (located at 70 E. 100 N., Farmington) on a Monday or Thursday at 1:00pm you may use the Bookings link to choose a time that works for your schedule. Parents are required to provide transportation to the testing center for this option.
Additional considerations
· Students desiring to accelerate math courses should be planning a career in a field that requires higher level math and are appropriately ready for the responsibility of directing much of their own study.
· Accelerated students will take the 7th Grade SAGE test at the end of the first semester. Students with proficiency under 3 will be moved to a 7th Grade regular or honors math class.
· Qualifying students are not required to register for this class.
· Students may also accelerate their math education by taking summer courses via Davis Connect.
