Research Methods. This course introduces the research process and focuses on the various quantitative, qualitative methods inquiry strategies
including the epistemological differences between these approaches. Attention is given to formulating problem
statements, posing research questions and hypotheses, and devising appropriate research designs. Students will develop a
broad understanding of these methods and how/when they should be employed. Specific topics will include
conceptualizing educational research, constructing measurement instruments, collecting and analyzing qualitative and
quantitative data, drawing inferences, and writing research proposals.
Projects:
Research Assignment -Weekly research assignments guide students through developing each section of a research paper. Across several weeks, students will progressively complete tasks such as selecting a research topic, conducting a literature review, designing methods, and outlining anticipated results and conclusions. These assignments build foundational research skills and directly contribute to the final research paper.
Critical Article Review - The critical article review requires students to analyze and evaluate peer-reviewed research articles using principles discussed in class. Students assess how researchers design studies, collect data, and interpret findings, focusing on methodological rigor and clarity. This assignment develops students’ ability to critically appraise educational research and synthesize scholarly literature.
Final Research Paper: Differentiated Instruction - The final research paper is a comprehensive project that combines all weekly assignments into a full-length scholarly report. It includes a title page, abstract, keywords, introduction, literature review, method section, anticipated results, anticipated discussion, conclusion, and references. While actual data collection is not required, students must design a detailed research plan, explain their methodological choices, and demonstrate understanding of the research process through coherent and well-supported writing.
