What was the CEL service activity? What organizations are being served?
- The CEL service activity was done on November 5th, it was about building backpacks for refugee kids to continue their education. Clients engaged in adding school supplies, such as notebooks, coloring books, pencils, color pencils, playdough, stickers, erasers, pencil sharpeners, and ABC’s and number cards. Each client was assigned 4 backpacks. They learned the importance of giving to others and they can do this by doing simple things for their family and friends and that they don’t have to wait until November to do something for the community. It was delivered on November 15th to the Liberty school located in Murray.
What was your role in this service project?
- My role in this service project was the main lead, I was in charge of gathering all the materials needed for this project and emailing with the service project specialist. I provide him with the list of the things he would buy for my partner and me.
What did you learn about yourself while interacting with psychosocial clinic clients? What did you learn about yourself while creating/implementing the service project for the additional organization through the psychosocial clinic?
- One thing that I learned about myself while interacting with psychosocial clinic clients is that I was good at motivating them and keeping this activity not just fun but at the same time meaningful. Something that I learned about myself while implementing the service project for an organization is that I made a service project that included the clients’ goals and making in therapeutic for them. I was able to adapt the activity for each client and all of them were able to participate and have fun.
What specific skills did you develop over the course of the psychosocial clinic?
- Adaptation and modifications: modifying activities and environments to support client’s participation in the activity.
- Communication skills: Seating the mood/tone, explanation of the activity.
- Team collaboration: I learned how to collaborate with my partner and decide how the activity would look like by writing the documentation together by sharing ideas and thoughts. Also, during the activity we decide who was going to do what, which made it easier for both of us.
- Time management: Managing the time during the activity and ending the session on time.
- Problem solving: Keep in mind about how to adapt the activity or what the clients would do while they were waiting for the materials to start building another backpack.
In what ways did this clinic help you understand the role of community and service in your life and the lives of others?
- Community support: The importance of support by providing essential resources to this population.
- Impact of service: The positive impact that act of service can have on individual’s lives, such as providing essential school supplies to refugee kids, which can enhance their educational experience.
- Personal growth: Personal growth through service, gaining a sense of fulfillment and purpose by contributing with the community.
- Networking: Building connections with individuals who are also committed to service, which can lead to future collaborative opportunities.
