Dear In-N-Out,
We visited the In-N-Out at Jordan Landing in Salt Lake City, UT, recently to complete an assignment that included learning about the American with Disabilities Act(ADA) regarding accessibility for individuals with disabilities. We sincerely appreciate In -N- Out’s approval to come and the time spent with us. We were able to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of accessibility and accessibility education for members of our community through this visit.
We are quite pleased with In-N-Out and how effectively the company complies with ADA regulations. We were impressed by the following:
Properly sized and marked accessible parking, with enough handicapped parking spots and ramps to the sidewalk.
The register at hip height, easily reachable for someone in a wheelchair
Grab bars and a large handicap-accessible toilet
Sink that accommodates a wheelchair
Several wheelchair-accessible tables
Good lighting and space
Employees trained to help individuals with various disabilities
Exit signs at floor level
Clean flooring with minimal tripping hazards
We found a few areas where accessibility could be improved:
Electric ADA door openers for the bathrooms and entry doors, especially since the entry doors are so heavy and employees are not always able to assist
Addition of a second ramp exit space for handicap parking
Once again, we would like to express our gratitude for allowing us access for this assignment, especially during these interesting times. The staff members were accommodating and provided a positive and pleasant experience. Due to the high level of ADA compliance, we would recommend this establishment. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Hamdi Yussuf, OTAS
Casandra Flores, OTAS
Stacy Forden, OTAS
Rebecca Jackson, OTAS
Reflection
For this assignment I had the opportunity to go with my classmates to do an ADA accessibility compliance at In-N-Out burger at West Jordan. This assignment helped me to meet course learning outcomes. One of the learning outcomes is the ability to communicate and collaborate with one community businesses on architectural design suggestions to improve the accessibility of the business for persons with disabilities. For this observation, this facility meets most of all of the ADA requirements, but one thing they didn't meet was having a button to open the door for wheelchair users to access the business area, which they are trained to open the door for them, but we recommend that would be better to add the button door opener to facilitate the access not just for the client but for the employees too. Another course outcome was measuring distance and heights for universal design compliance requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We did a couple of measuring's on the restroom doors, grab bars, sink height, and towel deposer meet the measuring requirements for person with disabilities. The last learning outcome is to demonstrate written communication skills by completing written papers. Writing this letter helped my classmates and I to develop our writing skills and knowing how important is to draft papers to communicate with this facility and the impact of our observation can have influence. This activity would help me with my clinical growth by developing my observation skills as an OTAS.
