Reflection
I participated in a service-learning engagement activity researching the social determinants of health. From this information my classmates and I created a case study that will be used as an open education resource. This was a wonderful experience and a beneficial assignment. We choose to research about Diabetes, and how culture, race, and environment impact the condition. This assignment also helped me to meet course learning outcomes. One of the course learning outcomes is to identify how to use an occupational therapy model of practice to evaluate and contribute to treatment planning of an individual with a disease or dysfunction. This experience helped me a lot because I was able to improve my clinical skills in deciding which model would be beneficial to gather information from. Another, learning outcome is to develop throughout treatment plan based on patient’s history, current level of function, and goals. This helped me to understand how important is doing research to be able to create goals depending on the client’s history. Also, using a clinical format is another course learning outcome that helped me during organizing my research information. This experience will influence my clinical growth in a way that would facilitate creating a client’s profile and creating SMART goals for my future clients.
