Fieldwork I Service-Learning Project Reflection
For my service-learning project, I helped one of my peers to finish the project that is called “What does this game do?.” My peer organized all the games from ages 2-3, 5-6, and 7 and up. We made a word document with all the board games and listed all the possible things that might be beneficial or how this game might help a kid with certain diagnosis, like some games would help with attention, vision, or fine motor skills. I was in charge of doing the games for ages 5-6 and 7 and up. To make it exact 10 hours, also help her to do an excel document by just selecting what games had similar things like visual scanning or attention. After writing out all the information of both documents plus doing research and discussing with my COTA and my peer what she started and what I needed to get done, I noticed that I did exactly the time that I needed to complete this project. I made sure that all the games would include all the things that might help a kid. The purpose of this project was to help the facility to grab games quickly and making it more client centered. This project was great because it didn’t cost any because I use Word and Excel. My COTA helped me with printing it out and laminated the list to keep it in the game room, so everyone in the facility could use it to choose a game for their clients.
I went into my Fieldwork with a few ideas for a service-learning project and my COTA had this project ready for me. My supervisor was excited to get this project done because it was a good way to see how we would collaborate as a team, and it would help us in the future when working with different field members. At this facility they like to use board games on every treatment session because play is the main children’s occupation. Board games are fun and what better to make it part of the treatment plans.
This project actually taught me a lot because I noticed that every board game has its own way to achieve something that a kid is having hard time with. Also, learned that you can use some games as an emotional regulation game for little kids and make it more fun for them to learn the zones of regulation. The more I am exposed to Occupational Therapy settings, the more I learn how unique interventions can be. You can really use any game and use it as a part of an intervention and can be meaningful and fun for all kids.
I feel really good about this project. I felt like a put a good amount of time and effort into it, and I am proud of how it turned out and how important is to have communication with other team members. I am really happy that I was able to provide my fieldwork site with something they didn’t have, and positive reactions definitely made me feel better about it.
This project turnout to be pretty meaningful because it would not be only beneficial for the facility but for the kids too. This would help them to make their treatment plans fast and client centered. I really enjoyed doing this project, it was another eye-opening experience for me.
