High School Presentation
For this assignment, my group and I had the opportunity to present at Copper Hills High School which is located in West Jordan, Utah on January 25, 2024. We presented for about 20 minutes to Madison Jenkins Medical Anatomy & Physiology class. There were about fourteen students present from 11th and 12th grades.
Our presentation was all about the basics of what occupational therapy is and a brief definition of occupational therapy, we talked about how to become a certified COTA, and about three different schools they can apply to. Also, about the job outlook and beginning salary. After that we went over the different practice settings, we explained some of the subcategories in each setting. Before talking about the adaptive equipment, we passed out some adaptive equipment we brought from school and gave them a chance to guess the name or the function of each device. The students had a lot of fun with that activity. Then we went over each adaptive equipment, at the end we did another activity letting the student to demonstrate how to use the equipment. They were good at it. I felt really good about the information we provided. Each student seemed to interested and willing to ask questions. We motivated them with jolly ranchers when they participated.
This experience helped me learn how to better explain Occupational Therapy to others who do not know much about it. This assignment also pushed me out of my comfort zone by having me present in front of a group of students. I was so nervous, but I prepared myself very well trying to know the material and practicing in front of my family it helps me to feel more confident to present that day. I really enjoyed this assignment; it was a fantastic way to practice and push myself out of my comfort zone. Also, it would help me to prepare for future presentations and feel more comfortable talking with other people, since this will be a huge benefit as a future practitioner.
