My adaptive device that I made is an “Adaptive Makeup Brush.” My inspiration to create this makeup brush, it was from a girl that I saw on social media, she is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She loves doing her makeup, she uses regular brushes and places them in between the sofa to get some stability. But she needs to be seating in the floor while doing her makeup. I started my research and looking if there were some flexible brushes and there were none in the makeup industry. I decided to make a brush that can be flexible and can stick any surface to increase body ergonomics. The materials that I used for the body of the brush was a phone car holder, I took away the phone part. I bought a small head brush and screw it into the part where the phone thing was on. I only spent $7 dollars in total because I already had the phone car holder. I try the makeup brush on me, I place it on my counter and use the brush to add my makeup foundation. It works pretty well; it has great stability. For some people doing their makeup is part of their routines, and having a disability can’t stop you from doing something that you love to do, that’s why I decided to adapt a makeup brush.
Presenting at the professional occupational conference was a great experience, I was able to talk to different people about my adaptive device, two of the people that I talked to, one of them told me that she has a client that are trying to teach her how to do her makeup but they were having hard time to place the brushes, and my idea was great, she never thought about using a phone card holder. The other person told me that her mom enjoys doing her makeup, but she is losing shoulder mobility and idea it is a perfect fit. My project benefits the profession on how to use this adaptive device with clients who have difficulty with grasping, mobility, or other things, but this can allow them to continue doing something that they like to do. I feel like everything went pretty well. I don’t think I might need to change anything. After presenting, I feel more prepared to do future presentations and any topic that can be beneficial to the community.
