Adult Clinic Learning Reflection
During the Spring semester I had the opportunity to lead 2 Adult onsite clinics. Participating in adult clinics helped me to create 3 connections with my learning. The first connection helped me to demonstrate the ability to teach and use motivation skills with a client in order to learn a skill. One of the clients that I practiced this was with a client that had hard time finding motivation to start her assignments and getting things done. Something that helped her to get things done was filling out her calendar for each month with all assignment’s due dates and things that she needed to get done. After, this client appeared less stress and felt more organized and ready to keep doing it on her own. Another connection to my leaning is to demonstrate proficiency in treatment techniques and compensatory/remedial strategies. I had a client who had spasticity and teaching him some stretching exercises to help him reduce his spasticity before participating in his favorite leisure activity. Also, accurately record treatment sessions content. I was able to do my documentation for each of my therapy sessions that I was in charge of leading. It helped me a lot to know how to explain what happened during therapy.
Students think critically is one connection to SLCC learning objectives because at participating in clinic I was able to engage with clients and creating treatment plans that would be meaningful for the clients while considering their level of performance. I really enjoyed this experience because it took me out of my comfort zone, and it helped me to feel prepared for my future as a COTA. Learning how to communicate with clients and creating treatment plans for different diagnoses and learning that the treatment plan would not always go as you planned, and being flexible would help me with my clinical growth.
