The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Description: I was assigned a flipped classroom for my technology in education class. A flipped classroom is where the teacher records a lecture and the students listen to the lecture online at home during homework time. The next day the kids come to class and work on the homework instead of having to listen to the lecture. For this project, I created a video lecture about the properties of multiplication for 3rd grade. The students are to watch the video and then complete the quiz that shows how to apply the information they just learned. In class, they would be able to ask questions about the problems and discuss any problems that arise. This is one way to know that as a teacher I'm not moving on with kids not knowing what they are doing.
Standards Connection: The flipped classroom presentation follows the common core math standard MFAS.3.OA.5. This standard states that students will fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division or properties of operations. The flipped classroom helps students recognize and learn about the properties of multiplication. While normally there would be a lecture in class we are working together and independently to complete the homework and to better understand where the problem lies and how to best fix it. It also eliminates the parents being confused as they could watch the flipped class and learn the lesson as well. This type of learning is wonderful for not just the students but for the teacher in learning more on the thought process.
Description of what I learned: I learned that some students will love and accel with the flipped classroom in certain subjects while others may struggle and need more guidance. I do think after creating a video that it would be super helpful for those who can't sit for long time spans or students who need more time or even extra review to go back and look at what was learned in that particular lesson. I do think it is something we should try in our classroom and see what the outcome is but to always have a "back up" plan incase if fails. I look forward to trying this learning method in my classroom someday.
This artifact was created for a middle grades literacy class that I took in the spring of 2022. For this artifact my group and I created a unit lesson to help students have a sense of creativity and focus on the details of their lives. Our goal was to help students reflect and appreciate who God created them to be. The final project was to have them create a book that they can reflect on who they are and what they would like to do later in life.
Knowledge indicator 5N of Teaching standard 5 states that the competent teacher "uses technology to accomplish differentiated instructional objectives that enhance learning for each student." When creating this unit I made sure to incorporate technology that students know how to use but can also strengthen their skills needed to complete the assessment. Knowledge indicator 5M indicates " uses strategies and techniques for facilitating meaningful inclusion of individuals with a range of abilities and experiences." This is also evident in this unit plan. The unit plan inivites all students to take a look at their lives and who they are and compelete the project in their best way. This will also show the student diversity in the class through many different presentations.
This artifact had many different learning outcomes and one was the collaboration with others and finding time to work on the project together. It also taught me flexability in the classroom. As a lesson on paper may only take a day but when students are working and the teaching may take longer and that is okay. For this lesson I used a few different activities that will push myself but also my students slightly out of their comfort zones to also help gain confidence for the final project.
