The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
This artifact was created for a science methods class that I took in the fall of 2021. In this paper I reflected on the many classrooms I had observed in and the classroom management procedures. Since writing this paper I have implemented many of these things into my student teaching classroom. The paper has many theories and considerations that I've researched all while thinking about my own classroom. This paper includes things like physical layout of a room, rules and procedures as well as my philosophy on classroom management, my teaching style, rules and expectations.
Knowledge Indicator 4A of Teaching Standard 4 states that the competent teacher "understands principles of and strategies for effective classroom and behavior management.” As you read the artifact you will be able to see that I can understand strategies for effective classroom and behavior management. I understand that every year and each teacher has different strategies that they pull from their tool box.
This artifact demonstrates clear understanding of strategies for effective classroom. Through creating this artifact, I have learned more tools for my tool box and how to best help many different students.
This artifact was used for my novice teaching and student teaching placement of rules that students were expected to follow in all the areas of the school they went. The school created what is called star rules to help remind students of proper behavior in each part of the school's campus. These rules were also located around the school for easy reference and reminding the students.
Knowledge indicator 4F of Teaching standard 4 states that the competent teacher " understands laws, rules, and ethical considerations regarding behavior intervention planning and behavior management (e.g., bullying, crisis intervention, physical restraint)." Through these rules we used them in the classroom for ways that students could earn jelly beans if there was a substitute to continue to encourage the good behavior. We also used them to monitor behavior and would use the behavior management system that the school had once a child had broken the rule repetitively and was not correcting behavior after being spoken to.
This artifact shows many of the ways to help students continue with positive behavior and helping magange their behavior. It is important that schools have things in place to help support students and teachers in this way. While being at the school this also really helped me as it had a school outline of rules and my expectations could be held within those rules.
