The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
This artifact was created for a middle grades literacy class that I took in the spring of 2021. For this artifact we were to create a reading plan unit. Students main focus was to reflect on other cultures and at the end of the unit be prepared to present at a culture fair of the culture they chose. The unit included a letter to parents, fifteen day calendar and five detailed lesson plans with mentor texts for a seventh grade class.
Knowledge Indicator 2F of Teaching Standard 2 states that the competent teacher "knows how to access the tools and knowledge related to latest findings (e.g., research, practice methodologies) and technologies in the disciplines." There are five different reading strategies that are to be used by students throughout the unit plan that shows that I know how to access tools and strategies to help students learn.
This artifact demonstrates clear understanding of accessing tools to complete lessons in the classroom. Through creating this artifact, I have learned that I need to have content knowledge and including many different reading strategies for students to use to help meet each students needs day by day.
This artifact was created for a middle grades literacy class that I took in the spring of 2021. For this artifact we were to create a writing plan unit. The unit included a letter to parents, fifteen day calendar and five detailed lesson plans with mentor texts.
Knowledge Indicator 2I of Teaching Standard 2 states that the competent teacher" evaluates teaching resources and materials for appropriateness as related to curricular content and each student's needs." In the unit plan there are many mentor texts so students can see examples and appropriate materials to help them write properly.
This artifact demonstrates clear understanding of evaluating resources and using them with curricular content in the classroom. Through creating this artifact, I have learned how to plan and think through an entire unit. As a teacher, I will need to have the content knowledge and know how to use multiple methods to create lessons for my students and including many ways for them to learn.
