January 10 I started my student teaching in a 4th grade classroom. Before the students went on Christmas break I made a fun welcome gift for the students. I also joined in on the fun of their Christmas party.
Students read the book Sweep The Story of a Girl and her Monster by Jonathan Auxier. In small groups students read stories at their reading level and discussed the stories with their leaders. My group finished our story a couple weeks early and as a final project after reading students completed a diorama box showing key events from the book. In addition they created videos to explain all the details in their box, why the event is important and which part of the book was their favorite.
In this lesson I taught 4th graders on the topic of summarizing with an end goal of writing a synopsis for their young authors book. We started off with reading a synopsis of the their mentor text for the writing process of young authors and looked at one more example. Students then read about Little Red Riding Hood and took parts of the story and labeled them if they should be included in the summary or not. After they completed this they then wrote a synopsis with their table partner about Little Red Riding Hood. After spending time with them and walking around to see progress I had a few groups share their synopsis and have the class choose weather or not they wanted to read the story. Finally, we launched into them writing their own synopsis of their story that at another time we read as a class and had them fill out a sticky note with choosing if the book would be a book they want to read or not and three fun facts about the story.
