Module 3 - Curriculum Anchored Assessment

This module guides teams as they analyze a unit from their available instructional materials with the path of student learning and thinking in mind. They then identify and flag key assessment moments across the unit and analyze those assessments against their vision for equitable science assessment they developed in Module 2. Finally, they determine possible next steps to improve the system of assessments in the unit of instruction.

Module 3 consists of three sessions:

In this session, participants review instructional materials to investigate the path of learning and thinking that occurs as students engage in sensemaking to figure out phenomena or design problems. Using a template, participants build a summary of the activities and tasks students work through to develop conceptual understanding. Finally, participants analyze the path of student learning and thinking with sensemaking and the three dimensions in mind and discuss possible gaps that need to be addressed.

In this session, participants identify key medium cycle and short cycle assessment opportunities across the learning sequence or instructional unit they reviewed in Session 3.1. They then determine the dimensionality of each flagged assessment. Finally, they tell the path of assessment across the unit and consider the information and evidence the assessment experiences provide and what feedback can be provided to students.

In this session, participants consider the flagged assessment opportunities in a unit of instruction as a single system and analyze it against a vision of student performance and assessment. From this analysis, they consider what high leverage adjustments, modifications, or enhancements need to be made to improve the system of assessment.
