Module 1 - Foundations of Student-Centered Assessment Systems

This module provides a space for district and school teams to come together as they seek to better understand their current vision for science learning and student performance. It provides an opportunity to bring student voice and perspective into current assessment practices. Finally, the module invites districts to consider current initiatives, beliefs, and frameworks that guide equity work that can be leveraged throughout the rest of the toolkit modules.

Module 1 consists of three sessions:

In this session, participants come together as a community of learners to start to document their visions for science learning and student performance that will ground our NGSS assessment work going forward.

In this session, we consider who may be left out of our vision for science learning and performance and why. We walk in the shoes of individual students to gain perspective and consider the environmental barriers that need to be removed to improve outcomes for students

In this session, we consider different ways assessment might play out in classrooms and how these assessments support or not our vision for science learning and performance. We use the TAPS’s Equity and Must-Haves documents to analyze five assessments and reflect on how these assessments do or not represent equitable assessment practices. In this session, participants analyze their local assessment system through various lenses to further examine features of equitable assessments and equitable assessment systems. A working definition of equity is introduced through a framework that serves as the foundation for the toolkit tools and processes.
