Staff work Sunday to Friday. Staff have off one hour on Sundays and Fridays. Mondays through Thursdays, staff have off three hours a day, except for nights off. When it's a staff members night off they have off from 6pm to 12pm. Staff are off from Friday around 7pm to Sunday 11am, except the first Saturday during pre-camp training and the last Saturday during camp closedown.
Typically a camp van is available to take staff who don't have cars into town on nights off and the weekend.
There are four weekends that we have campers on camp. Staff will be divided up into four groups and will need to work a shift one of those weekends. They will have extra time off the following week to make up for what they worked over the weekend. With the exception of late hires, staff will have a choice in which weekend they work a shift.
How is scheduling done?
Each week staff fill out a unit preference sheet for the following week. On that sheet, they rank the programs based on which programs they want to work with. So if a staff member doesn't want to go backpacking, they'll rank the backpacking program last. The leadership team does unit assignments to make sure that each program, or group of campers, has a well balanced team of staff. The leadership team tries to place staff in one of their top five programs.
On Sundays staff will receive their schedule for the week. They'll also as a group fill out a time off schedule. Generally only one staff member from a group can be off at a time. Each staff members time off will vary from week to week and day to day.
Additional time off can usually be accommodated if known in advance.
During their three hours off, most staff will take time to recharge. They'll shower or nap, or hang out in the staff house. The staff house has wifi, AC, small kitchen, and a flushing toilet. Staff may also walk down to the nearby store and buy a cold soda or ice cream.
During nights off many staff will go into Bridgewater or Harrisonburg to grab dinner and run errands. Upon return many staff will hangout in the staff house or go to bed early.
On the weekends staff may go into town, hangout on camp, or go home. Occasionally staff sponsored trips to go caving may be offered, or program areas on camp like the pool or archery may be open. For staff who interested in hiking, there are many opportunities nearby.
Several staff are needed each weekend to be bus counselors. Bus counselors ride the bus with the departing campers on Friday and return Sunday with the new group of campers. The bus stops are in Fairfax county Virginia and Montgomery county Maryland. For staff from those areas who do not have a car, this is an easy way for them to go home for the weekend.
