Calvin's Motivation Patterns
Calvin has a lot of different environments and like all people, he acts differently and is treated differently by others in each one. Let's look into each environment and think about that may impact Calvin's motivational patterns.
Calvin in the Classroom:
Calvin lacks self regulation in the classroom because anytime his teacher calls on him, he is way off task/doesn’t know what’s going on.
Calvin is constantly being put in the corner or sent to the principle because of his lack of self regulation.
Calvin Taking Tests:
Calvin gives roundabout answers to test questions.
-He is very off task while taking the tests and rarely gets any of the answers correct
Calvin with Peers:
Calvin’s peers all pick on him and are very rude
He is smaller compared to others
When he goes to quit baseball team because teammates are being mean, the coach calls him a quitter
Hobbes is a good friend, supportive and asks Calvin to play, “Calvin Ball”
Called a shrimp
Calvin Working on Projects:
Group member calvin is working with is dysregulated
Group member insults calvin, and pressures him to complete his work
Calvin dissociates when group member is speaking to him
Calvin procrastinates group project
Calvin uses a loud voice when Hobbes asks what issues he cares about for his report
Generalizes the task to I just need to write the paper
Calvin becomes frustrated when he has limited time to finish his paper
Sets unrealistic goals
Calvin Doing Homework:
Calvin becomes frustrated with imaginary numbers
Calvin is able to focus on his paper because he took some medication, hobbes is a stuffed animal, calvin is not dissociated
Calvin explains why the homework is pointless
Calvin Talking to Dad:
Calvin's dad attempts to get Calvin to reflect on why he did so poorly in his schoolwork
When Calvin attempts to self-regulate by seeking knowledge from his dad, Calvin's dad messes around with him by giving him dumb answers that Calvin believes because he's so young and doesn't know better.
Calvin attempts to implement motivational strategies with his parents but fails because his dad shuts them down
Calvin at the Bus Stop:
Reflects on the reason why he must go to school every day
Calvin talks a lot about why he shouldn't have to go, coming up with scenarios to get him out of going.
Calvin Learning Outside of School:
With Hobbes there is excitement and curiosity
Calvin asks questions to learn more about snakes
Calvin is so excited to learn more about snakes with Hobbes he runs home to ask for a book about snakes from his mom
Cavin found a personal interest
Hobbes encourages Calvin to be positive and really gets down to his level
Calvin does experiments with Hobbes such as seeing how fast his wagon can go
Hobbes encourages Calvin to do experiments and learn while playing such as digging for “bones”
