Oct 20 - The Spitfires Fuel Gauge is another one that is far too expensive for me, so it will be a 3D print only, from photographs.
But it is also one that has puzzled me for some time. Unlike the other gauges which mostly are pushed through the panel from the rear and have 4 mounting screws, none of the panel photographs showed any signs of how it was mounted.
Then today I was watching a documentary "The Spitfire Factory" about the restoration company based at Biggin Hill in Kent and low and behold they were showing a small segment on building the panel for a Spitfire restoration on behalf of the Greek Airforce.
Above are a couple of partial screen shots from the program. You can clearly see that the instrument is intended to be inserted from the front of the panel and then a brass slip ring slid over from the back. The slip ring is tightened to the gauge with the top ring compression screw. A a bolt is inserted into each of the threaded side lugs on the slip ring and tightened against the back of the panel to hold the gauge in place. Not visible is any locking mechanism but I would expect a lock nut to be added to each bolt given the amount of vibration from the Merlin on the other side of the firewall !
