Another Instrument a 6A/1298 Direction Indicator that at current prices, around £100, is not really affordable for me.
But I have managed to pick up an equivalent totally unserviceable 6A/602 for just £10.50p on eBay. It looks a real mess but as all I want is the facia and compass ring that does not worry me.
21 May 19 - Having injured myself and unable to play golf I find I have time to attack the instrument conversions.
Given that the 6A/602 has a frozen mechanism the simplest solution to taking this apart was to take a disk cutter and remove the top and sides. I will replace this with a lighter card or plastic cover later.
Once the cover is removed this released the upper swivel and also provided access to the 4 screws that held the compass ring in place. Remove the ring and the gyro assembly can be pulled up and out. The rubber on the adjuster knob was decrepit and the knob shaft itself frozen. As I am replacing this with a rotary encoder I cut the shaft and after removing the 2 screws holding the bottom gear block in place drove the shaft out with a hammer and punch.
Warning! The inside of the instrument was covered in a white dust, most likely Lead Carbonate from the back of the compass ring, but it may have contained some radium salts - so all of this work was done with a face mask, rubber gloves and air extractor on.
Sep 20 - Given my switch to printed instruments - the only piece that I will use from this ADI is the compass ring itself, the rest is, as it came, scrap!
