Materials

Ò Approximately 100 yards of worsted weight yarn (Sample made from Malabrigo Merino Worsted, Olive)

Ò Small length on waste yarn

Ò 1 set US#8 double-pointed needles

Ò 1 cable needle

Ò 1 stitch marker

Abbreviations

C6F: slip three stitches to cable needle and hold to the front; knit next 3 stitches; knit 3 stitches from cable needle.


Directions

Left Hand

Using a cable cast on or long tail cast on, cast on 40 stitches.

Distribute the stitches on 3 needles as follows: 22 sts on the first needle, 8 sts on the second needle, 10 sts on the third needle.

Join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.

Work 8 rounds in K2, P2 rib. After working a few rounds, place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of a round.

Rnd 9: [K2, P2] twice, C6F, [P2, K2] twice, purl to end of round.

Rnds 10-14: [K2, P2] twice, K6, [P2, K2] twice, purl to end of round.

Rnd 15: C6F, P2, K6, P2, C6F, purl to end of round.

Rnds 16-20: [K6, P2] twice, K6, purl to end of round.

Rnd 21: K6, P2, C6F, P2, K6, purl to end of round.

Rnds 22-26: Repeat rnds 16-20

Rnd 27: C6F, P2, K6, P2, C6F, P10, using waste yarn, k6; slip these sts back to left needle and k them again using working yarn; purl to end of round.

Rnds 28-32: Repeat rnds 10-14

Rnd 33: [K2, P2] twice, C6F, [P2, K2] twice, purl to end of round.

Work 7 rounds in K2, P2 rib.

Bind off in rib pattern. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

* To make handwarmers longer (reach past the wrist), repeat Rnds 15 through 26 again before working Rnd 27. You will need more than one skein if you also make a hat.

Thumb

Carefully remove waste yarn and place resulting live sts on two double-point needles; there will be 6 sts below the opening and 5 sts above. Attach yarn and k the 6 sts on lower needle; using a second needle, pick up and K 2 sts in space between upper and lower needle, K first 3 sts from upper needle; using a third needle, K remaining 2 sts from upper needle and pick up and K 3 sts in space between this needle and lower needle. 16 sts.

Work 12 rnds in K1, P1 rib (or to desired size). Bind off in rib.

Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

Right Hand

Work the same as the Left Hand for Rnds 1-26, except distribute the stitches on 3 needles as follows: 22 sts on the first needle, 10 sts on the second needle, 8 sts on the third needle.

Rnd 27: C6F, P2, K6, P2, C6F, P2, using waste yarn, k6; slip these sts back to left needle and k them again using working yarn; purl to end of round.

Rnds 28-40: Work same as Left Hand
