Before COVID 19, eight graders from 30 schools around the country participated in the project. They received an additional hour per week to learn about topics such as Global Warming , floods, hurricanes and map skills. The English teacher and the geography teacher taught in the same classroom. Students worked both individually and collaboratively on tasks such as ‘The Race to Mars’, ‘Celestial Bodies’ and ‘Exploring Venus’. Special focus was given to using digital collaborative tools to present information. Teachers who participated in the program took a 60- hour online course given by both the Geography and English counselors. The course goals were twofold: to enrich teachers’ knowledge on the geographical content and to suggest pedagogical ways to teach it in the classroom.
This year, a group of highly motivated GEO -English teachers participated in a 30 hour in-service course . Themes of the course included global warming, geological events on earth and man-environment relationship . Here is a sample CBL lesson
GO-English intends to expand in 2021-22 to many more schools adopting a multidisciplinary approach to English learning. Aligned with the MOE overarching theme of Flexible Pedagogy , the program sets a practical format to be implemented in the classroom. An interdisciplinary in-service course will be offered to teachers introducing basic geography topics and lesson planning workshops. The course will be led by a U.S. GEO specialist, and a team of highly motivated GEO -English teachers will be offering pedagogical support to course participants.
