Techniques for Slow Reading
Pick a short passage—usually a few verses is enough.
Read it more than once. The first time, read to understand the story being told or the general principles being taught. The second and third times, read for deeper understanding. Try to notice something you didn’t in the previous reading.
Look up definitions of unfamiliar words—and, sometimes, familiar words. You may find secondary definitions or connotations that unlock new spiritual insights. In the Gospel Library app, you can tap and hold a word and select “Define” to quickly see a definition of that word.
Look up the related scriptures in the footnotes—and add your own!
Try restating the passage in your own words.
Never assume that you already know what a passage means, no matter how many times you have read it before. Always be open to new insights the Lord might give you (see 2 Nephi 28:29–30).
Questions to Ask as You Read the Book of Mormon Slowly
What does this passage teach me about Jesus Christ? How does it strengthen my testimony “that Jesus is the Christ”? (title page).
Why might Nephi (or Jacob or Mormon or Moroni, etc.) have chosen that word, phrase, or detail?
What does the Lord want me to learn from this passage? What is His message for me?
Blessings of Scripture Study
“My dear brothers and sisters, I promise that as you prayerfully study the Book of Mormon every day, you will make better decisions—every day. I promise that as you ponder what you study, the windows of heaven will open, and you will receive answers to your own questions and direction for your own life. I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day, even the gripping plague of pornography and other mind-numbing addictions” (President Russell M. Nelson, “The Book of Mormon: What Would Your life Be Like without It?,” Ensign, Nov. 2017, 62-63).
“As you prayerfully study, I promise that the heavens will open for you. The Lord will bless you with increased inspiration and revelation. As you read, I would encourage you to mark each verse that speaks of or refers to the Savior. Then be intentional about talking of Christ, rejoicing in Christ, and preaching of Christ with your families and friends. You and they will be drawn closer to the Savior through this process. And changes, even miracles, will begin to happen” (President Russell M. Nelson, “Sisters’ Participation in the Gathering of Israel,” Ensign, Nov. 2018, 69-70).
“I suggest that you shape the style of your study to fit you. One way is to read a book of scripture from the first page to the last. This method gives good overall perspective. But other approaches also have merit. Attention to a particular topic or a specific theme, supplemented by use of cross-referencing footnotes and study guides, can help to switch on the light of doctrinal understanding.” (President Nelson, “Living by Scriptural Guidance,” Ensign, Nov. 2000)
“Time for scripture study requires a schedule that will be honored. Otherwise, blessings that matter most will be at the mercy of things that matter least.” (President Nelson, “Living by Scriptural Guidance,” Ensign, Nov. 2000)
“Pondering a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation and the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost. Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, giving peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the challenges of life. They have potent power to heal emotional challenges when there is faith in the Savior. They can accelerate physical healing” (Elder Richard G. Scott “The Power of Scripture,” Ensign, Nov. 2011, 6).
“Feasting on the word of God each day is more important than sleep, school, work, television shows, video games, or social media. You may need to reorganize your priorities to provide time for the study of the word of God. If so, do it!” (Elder Scott “Make the Exercise of Faith Your First Priority,” Ensign, Nov. 2014).
“When we respond to the Lord’s gentle invitation, ‘Learn of me,’ we become partakers of His divine power” (President Thomas S. Monson “Learn of Me,” Ensign, March 2016, 6)
“Search the scriptures—search the revelations which we publish, and ask your Heavenly Father, in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, to manifest the truth unto you, and if you do it with an eye single to His glory nothing doubting, He will answer you by the power of His Holy Spirit. You will then know for yourselves and not for another. You will not then be dependent on man for the knowledge of God; nor will there be any room for speculation” (Prophet Joseph Smith, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 11–12).
“I am grateful for emphasis on reading the scriptures. I hope that for you this will become something far more enjoyable than a duty; that, rather, it will become a love affair with the word of God. I promise you that as you read, your minds will be enlightened and your spirits will be lifted. At first it may seem tedious, but that will change into a wondrous experience with thoughts and words of things divine” (President Gordon B. Hinckley “The Light within You,” Ensign, May 1995, 99).
“As you read of the life and teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ, you will draw closer to Him who is the author of our salvation” (GBH “Rise to the Stature of the Divine within You,” Ensign, Nov. 1989, 97).
“When individual members and families immerse themselves in the scriptures regularly and consistently, … other areas of activity will automatically come. Testimonies will increase. Commitment will be strengthened. Families will be fortified. Personal revelation will flow” (President Ezra Taft Benson “The Power of the Word,” Ensign, May 1986, 81).
“I find that when I get casual in my relationships with divinity and when it seems that no divine ear is listening and no divine voice is speaking, that I am far, far away. If I immerse myself in the scriptures the distance narrows and the spirituality returns. I find myself loving more intensely those whom I must love with all my heart and mind and strength, and loving them more, I find it easier to abide their counsel” (President Spencer W. Kimball, The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 135).
“I think that people who study the scriptures get a dimension to their life that nobody else gets and that can’t be gained in any way except by studying the scriptures. There’s an increase in faith and a desire to do what’s right and a feeling of inspiration and understanding that comes to people who study the gospel—meaning particularly the Standard Works—and who ponder the principles, that can’t come in any other way” (Elder Bruce R. McConkie Church News, 24 Jan. 1976, 4).
“I promise you that… scripture study will build within the walls of your home a security and bonding that will enrich your lives and prepare your families to meet the challenges of today and the eternities to come” (Elder L. Tom Perry in Conference Report, Apr. 1993, 113; or Ensign, May 1993, 92).
“My counsel is this: we will do well to stay within the sequence mapped by the inspired curriculum. Our willingness to do that may teach an even more powerful lesson of faith. [Others] will see that we have a sure conviction that the scriptures apply to every time” (Eyring An Evening with a General Authority, The Lord Will Multiply the Harvest, 6 Feb 1998)
“The only way you can be sure that a busy schedule doesn’t crowd out scripture study is to establish a regular time to study the scriptures…When I am in situations where I break out of the pattern, it’s hard on me. Once you get used to regular scripture study, you miss it if you don’t have it. It’s like food—you have to have it. I know that I need the scriptures like I need food. I don’t miss a regular meal, and a I don’t miss regular scripture study.” (Eyring, “A Discussion of Scripture Study,” Ensign, July 2005, 24)
“Reading a book of scripture from beginning to end initiates the flow of living water into our lives by introducing is to important stories, gospel doctrines, and timeless principles. This approach also enables us to learn about major character in the scriptures and the sequence, timing, and context of events and teachings. Reading the written word in this way exposes us to the breadth and volume of scripture.” (Bednar. CES Fireside, 4 FEB 2004)
“I do not know of a better way to always remember him than to daily study the scriptures. That covenant is not an abstract notion. It can be honored in meaningful, personal prayer every morning and night and in diligent study of the scriptures. When I served as a stake president and interviewed literally hundreds of members of the Church, I frequently would ask, ‘Do you remember and keep the covenants you have made?’ I do not recall many people answering no. When I would inquire further and ask about their scripture study, some would say, "I do not have time." Then I would ask about their personal prayers, and the answer often was, "I am not as consistent as I should be." On some occasions I would then inquire, ‘Do you, in fact, keep the covenant to always remember Him?’”(David A. Bednar, “Understanding the importance of scripture study, Ricks College Devotional January 6, 1998)
"It is certain that one who studies the scriptures every day accomplishes far more than one who devotes considerable time one day and then lets days go by before continuing. Not only should we study each day, but there should be a regular time set aside when we can concentrate without interference. . . . Perhaps what is more important than the hour of the day is that a regular time be set aside for study. . . . A quarter of an hour is little time, but it is surprising how much enlightenment and knowledge can be acquired in a subject so meaningful. The important thing is to allow nothing else to ever interfere with our study" (Howard W. Hunter, in Conference Report, Oct. 1979, 91-92).

By no surprise, I found that the teachings of these principles were most concentrated in the Book of Mormon. But what was so interesting was that in the Old Testament before Christ, faith only appears 2 times, repentance 39 times, baptism or a direct reference to Holy Ghost are not mentioned and the gospel, and enduring to the end is also absent. Where in contrast, before Christ in the Book of Mormon (before 3Nephi 11), the word faith is repeated 165 times, repent 190 times, baptism 67 times, Holy Ghost 35 times, gospel 14 times and endure to the end 7 times! What a glaring contrast in the power of another testament of Jesus Christ.
