Mountains to climb
Why does this have to happen to me?
What can I learn from this experience?
Is there anything I should change about myself?
Why do I have to suffer this now?
Have I done anything to cause this?
How has the Lord blessed me and helped me through past trials?
Invite a student to read 2 Kings 6:14–17 aloud and look for the question Elisha’s servant asked.
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “In the gospel of Jesus Christ you have help from both sides of the veil and you must never forget that. When disappointment and discouragement strike—and they will—you remember and never forget that if our eyes could be opened we would see horses and chariots of fire as far as the eye can see riding at reckless speed to come to our protection. They will always be there, these armies of heaven, in defense of Abraham’s seed” (Jeffrey R. Holland, “For Times of Trouble,” New Era, Oct. 1980, 15)
Elder Maxwell: “Since there was no exemption from suffering for Christ, how can there be one for us? Do we really want immunity from adversity? Especially when certain kinds of suffering can aid our growth in this life? To deprive ourselves of those experiences, much as we might momentarily like to, would be to deprive ourselves of the outcomes over which we shouted with anticipated joy when this life’s experiences were explained to us so long ago, in the world before we came here.
“Life is a school in which we enrolled not only voluntarily but rejoicingly; and if the school’s Headmaster employs a curriculum—proven, again and again on other planets, to bring happiness to participants—and if we agreed that once we were enrolled there would be no withdrawals, and also to undergo examinations that would truly test our ability and perceptivity, what would an experienced Headmaster do if, later on, there were complaints? Especially if, in His seeming absence, many of the school children tore up their guiding notebooks and demanded that He stop the examinations since these produced some pain? … One learns by taking the full course!” (Neal A. Maxwell, All These Things Shall Give Thee Experience [1979], 26–27).

“As I look to the future, I see little to feel enthusiastic about concerning the family in America and across the world. Drugs and alcohol are taking a terrible toll, which is not likely to decrease. Harsh language, one to another, indifference to the needs of one another—all seem to be increasing. There is so much of child abuse. There is so much of spouse abuse. There is growing abuse of the elderly. All of this will happen and get worse unless there is an underlying acknowledgment, yes, a strong and fervent conviction, concerning the fact that the family is an instrument of the Almighty. It is His creation. It is also the basic unit of society.
I lift a warning voice to our people. We have moved too far toward the mainstream of society in this matter. Now, of course there are good families. There are good families everywhere. But there are too many who are in trouble. This is a malady with a cure. The prescription is simple and wonderfully effective. It is love. It is plain, simple, everyday love and respect. It is a tender plant that needs nurturing. But it is worth all of the effort we can put into it.
... I see a wonderful future in a very uncertain world. If we will cling to our values, if we will build on our inheritance, if we will walk in obedience before the Lord, if we will simply live the gospel we will be blessed in a magnificent and wonderful way. We will be looked upon as a peculiar people who have found the key to a peculiar happiness” (Gordon B. Hinckley, “Look to the Future,” Ensign, Nov. 1997, 69).

Embracing with love and law
Pres. Oaks "Be careful how you characterize yourself. … The only single quality that should characterize us is that we are a son or daughter of God. That fact transcends all other characteristics. (“How to Define Yourself,” New Era, June 2013, 48) Each of us is a child of God with a potential destiny of eternal life. Every other label … is temporary or trivial in eternal terms. Don’t choose to label yourselves or think of yourselves in terms that put a limit on a goal for which you might strive. (“Where Will This Lead?,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2019, 62)

33:10-34:39 Get curious..l let Christ teach us
These descriptions of love and law are both true guides of what God has commanded us to do. I have previously referred to our “continually trying to balance the dual commandments of love and law,”19 but I now believe that Anyone who does not treat individuals who face gender identity challenges with love and dignity is not aligned with the teachings of the first and second great commandments. Thus, on the subject of God’s law, we need to remember that God has revealed again and again that He created male and female.20 And on the subject of our duty to love our neighbor, we need to remember that God has commanded us to love even those who do not keep all the commandments.
If you, a family member, or a friend is struggling with these issues of confusion of identity, I urge you to apply both the law of the gospel and the love and mercy of our Savior and Redeemer, who will help and guide you, if you patiently walk in His paths. Jesus Christ, who said He was the “light of the world,”21 teaches us the path we need to follow to realize our Heavenly Father’s choicest blessings. He teaches us through the scriptures, through His prophets, and through personal revelation. He loves us and will guide us as we seek to follow where He leads us.

Lesson 4 part 2 The everlasting covenant

If the Lord were speaking to you tonight, He would urge you to understand your identity—to know who you really are. He did so when He spoke to the people of ancient America. After identifying Himself, He informed His listeners of their identity:
And behold, ye are the children of the prophets; and ye are of the house of Israel; and ye are of the covenant which the Father made with your fathers, saying unto Abraham: And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. [3 Nephi 20:25; emphasis added]
You young adults share that same identity, which means even more when you are sealed to your companion in the temple. Some of you are already married. Most of you are still searching for the right one. I wish you well! Keep searching! Don’t forget: “Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 11:11). Isn’t that a nice scripture? I love it!
Whether married or single, you will all have work to do. I hope it will be enjoyable. It’s nice to bounce out of bed each morning eager to enjoy a day’s work, and it is especially gratifying when we can bless the lives of others. But please remember: You work to sustain life; you don’t live to sustain work.
Your life will be a blessed and balanced experience if you first honor your identity and priority. Keep a good long-range view, knowing that the days of retirement from your work will come. There will also be an end to your mortal life. For hale and hearty young adults, those realities seem pretty remote—about the last things you worry about. But the day of your demise is coming, and eventually you will stand before the Lord in judgment...
The Lord has invited us to symbolize our covenant with Him by a sign that is inward as well as outward. When the sacred emblems of His flesh and blood are administered to us, we are invited to take them into our bodies. As we do, His atoning sacrifice literally becomes a part of our own identity.
"This doctrine is so basic, so oft stated, and so instinctively simple that it can seem to be ordinary, when in reality it is among the most extraordinary knowledge we can obtain. A correct understanding of our heavenly heritage is essential to exaltation. It is foundational to comprehending the glorious plan of salvation and to nurturing faith in the Firstborn of the Father, Jesus the Christ, and in His merciful Atonement.Further, it provides continual motivation for us to make and keep our indispensable eternal covenants." -Elder Hallstrom https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2016/04/i-am-a-child-of-god?lang=eng

Lesson 3 Draw on His Power
KATE
"They all just kept saying their membership is separate from their discipleship. They struggle a lot with feeling like they don’t measure up, comparison (especially to people they see as more righteous than them), and perfectionism. So in their perspective their membership, which they see as a big list of to dos and don’t dos that come from church culture, is something that is too much for them. They really dismiss their covenants and their connection with Christ. For them it’s all about church culture and comparison and feeling like they don’t measure up. So to justify their decisions and choices and feelings, they just separate their “membership” from their discipleship. They think you don’t need to be a good member of the church (keep your covenants) to be a good disciple. It’s sad because rather than seeing it as keeping their covenants they’ve made with the Lord, they see it as this heavy burden that is being pushed on them by “the church” and church culture. So they want to be a good person but they don’t want to be accountable to reading their scriptures, going to the temple, living the law of chastity, wearing the temple garment, and a lot more. Because it’s hard for them, and they don’t want to feel guilty for making mistakes and so they just rationalize that it’s coming from the church, not a covenant. Or some of them don’t even want to keep those covenants at all, so they just rationalize it so they can feel comfortable with the lifestyle they want to live. It’s like they’ve 180’d from being way too strict and hard on themselves, to thinking that all you need to do in life is be kind and only try when you feel up to it. I’d say a lot of their perspective comes from spiritual laziness and apathy . I think sometimes it’s perfectionism, but usually it’s the apathy. We actually just had a lesson on repentance too, and a lot of those same girls were saying that they don’t think you need to repent everyday. They say it’s a bad thing and it makes them feel guilty and miserable and things. So they don’t repent daily, or often at all. They think it’s damaging to their self esteem and mental health to pray about all the things they did wrong that day. So the genuinely think repentance is not a good thing… they think choices are just neutral things. There isn’t a right or wrong. Theirs a “this is better for me” and “this isn’t as good for me”. So they don’t think you need to repent about your decisions and choices and actions. You just need to accept them and accept yourself. And all you need to focus on is loving others and being kind to them, not judging them, and that’s all. The other stuff is extra and separate from discipleship. (This is all what they said about it).How do I know what God's will is for me in my life?
Why do I need covenants? If I go to my ward once a month I'm still active right?
I'd rather be kind than perfect. The less expectation I have for myself, the better.
Do I really need garments and the temple?
Drawing on the Power of Jesus Christ
"Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is not just one of many things we do. The Savior is the motivating power behind all that we do. He is not a rest stop in our journey. He is not a scenic byway or even a major landmark. He is “the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by [Jesus Christ].” That is the Way and our ultimate destination." -Elder Uchtdorf’s
“The more we do to stay firmly on the covenant path, the more our faith in Jesus Christ will grow. The more our faith grows, the more we will desire to repent. And the more we repent, the more we will strengthen our covenant relationship with God. That covenant relationship draws us to the temple because keeping temple covenants is how we endure to the end.” Craven
