How to set up your Personal Security Network
Step-by-step instructions on setting up your Personal Security Network after you download and install the Bodyguard Application from the Google Play or the Galaxy Store. Although using Bodyguard's basic functions is simple, once the Application is installed and properly initialized, some setup work is required to get to that point. The instructions below will guide you through the installation and the configuration process.
Follow the instructions and the suggested actions highlighted in yellow.
Before you can use Bodyguard, you need to review and accept legal and other required disclosures.
Selecting individual items will take you to the corresponding disclosure page.
If you want a Quick Start, select the "I Agree" checkmark and tap the "ACCEPT" button.
You can always review all the disclosures later by selecting the appropriate item from the Main Menu.
Please accept the request to access your contacts.
Bodyguard uses your contact information to let you choose members of your Personal Security Network from your existing contacts.
The contact information is used only to display your contacts to you and for no other reason.
Please tap Allow as highlighted in the screenshot to proceed.
On first open, Bodyguard displays the Quick-Start Tutorial pages organized in four sections that introduce key concepts and provide step-by-step guidance for each.
Please browse through these pages to become familiarized with these concepts.
When you are done, tap the arrow as highlighted in the screenshot, or the back button (not shown) to proceed.
You can always review this tutorial later by selecting it from the Main Menu.
Reading device's location is a key feature of Bodyguard.
Please select the option as highlighted in the screenshot.
If you deny access to your device's location, functionality of the Application will be severely limited.
The Quick Tips welcome screen pops up only on first open.
Please read the instructions and tap CONTINUE to proceed.
You will need to activate Bodyguard as a device admin app if you want to use the phone locking feature.
If you choose not to allow this permission, the LOCK button will be disabled on the SECURITY MEASURES page.
We suggest you choose to activate this feature as shown in the screenshot.
After you are asked to select the Google account to use with Bodyguard, you will be taken to the HOME PAGE.
It is important to select the same Google account as the one your friends will use to connect with you from their phones.
Bodyguard automatically displays your own information on the HOME PAGE. This allows you to see exactly what information you are sharing with your contacts.
Open the Main Menu to proceed to the next step as highlighted in the screenshot.
You can wait for the Application to ask you to grant it permissions in piecemeal fashion. However, we recommend you process all permission requests at once. This approach greatly simplifies interactions with the Application and will save you time and effort.
In this tutorial we will follow that path.
Scroll down the Main Menu and select the menu item About Permissions as shown in the screenshot.
When the ABOUT PERMISSIONS page opens, please read the accompanying text to understand which permissions the Application requires and why.
When you are ready to proceed, please tap the CONTINUE button as shown in the screenshot.
Bodyguard is designed to be able to operate in the background, i.e., with the screen off.
Google requires a special disclosure for Apps that collect location data in the background.
Please read and accept this disclosure before proceeding to the next step, as shown in the accompanying screenshot.
To enable background data collection, which is required to operate Bodyguard, please choose the Allow all the time option as shown in the screenshot.
To continue to the next step, tap the back icon at the top of the screen.
If you would like Bodyguard to be able to record and share your audio with your friends, please choose the While using the app option, as highlighted in yellow.
Bodyguard will not record or share your audio without explicit direction from you.
If you would like Bodyguard to be able to take pictures and record and share video with your friends, please choose the While using the app option, as highlighted in yellow.
Bodyguard will not record or share any photos or video without explicit direction from you.
If you would like Bodyguard to be able to call your friends in an emergency situation, please choose the Allow option, as highlighted in yellow.
Bodyguard will not make phone calls without explicit direction from you.
If you receive a special promotion advertising a free trial period, now would be a good time to activate that subscription option.
Please open the Main Menu and scroll down to the Subscription Options menu item.
Tap this item to proceed to the SUBSCRIPTION OPTIONS page.
You may see a pop-up with our recommended subscription option and the reasoning behind it.
Please tap the OK text to continue to the next step.
When you tap on the Available Subscription Options, a pop-up dialog box will present the available choices.
If you have access to a sponsored subscription code, for example a trial run code, please select the Tier IV option as shown in the screenshot.
Press OK to proceed to the next step.
Tap inside the Subscription Code window and enter your subscription code.
Subscription codes are not reusable, so be careful not to override it prematurely with another subscription option.
After you've entered your code, please tap the OK text to proceed to the next step.
Your subscription code will be validated, and you will be directed to the HOME PAGE.
The next step in the process will be to add one or more of your friends to your Personal Security Network.
Bodyguard assumes that the friends you want to add already exist in your Contacts. If that is not true, you should first add information about your friends into your Contacts database. You can use any available contact management Apps on your device.
The only piece of information Bodyguard requires to connect you with your friends is their Gmail address. This address should match the address they will use to log into their copy of Bodyguard.
From the Main Menu choose the Manage Contacts option as shown in the screenshot.
The MANAGE CONTACTS page is used to add and remove contacts from the Contacts Group named Virtual Defender.
Any contact added to the Virtual Defender Group will appear on the ALLIANCE MEMBERS page described a bit later.
The MANAGE CONTACTS page is available for your convenience. You can use any contact management App to create the group Virtual Defender, and then add your chosen contacts to that group.
You can use the convenience filter at the top of the page to narrow down the list of visible contacts. Simply type in a character string you expect to appear anywhere in the contact's name to narrow down your selection. Then tap the OK button to apply the filter, as shown in the screenshot.
You can add as many of your contacts to the Virtual Defender contact group as you like.
Simply tap the contact's name to add or remove them from the group.
Once you have added all your desired contacts to the Virtual Defender contact group, you can proceed to the next step by tapping the pulsating button in the lower right corner of the page.
Please note that this button appears only when there are pending changes to the contact's group.
Now you are ready to choose which of your friends you want to share your location and any multimedia data with.
From the Main Menu select the Alliance Members item to open the ALLIANCE MEMBERS page.
The ALLIANCE MEMBERS page displays all of the contacts that belong to the Virtual Defender contact group as you selected earlier.
This page lets you quickly and easily activate and deactivate your friends within your Personal Security Network.
To change your friend's activation state tap on the text of their name, or the checkbox next to their name as shown in the screenshot.
Once you have made all of your desired changes on this page, tap the pulsating button in the lower right corner to commit your changes.
Activating a friend automatically authorizes them to access your shared data.
Any friend that was newly activated by this action will immediately have access to your shared data.
Any fiend that was deactivated by this action will immediately lose access to your shared location and any multimedia data.
After activating your alliance members, you will return to the HOME PAGE, where you will see a list of all active members in your Personal Security Network.
At this point, however, you may not be able to see their status.
They will need to go through similar steps on their device and activate you as their active Virtual Defender before you can share data among yourselves.
