The Bodyguard, Virtual Defender, Personal Security Network Application provides a variety of ways to customize user experience through the settings and options available via the Main Menu Settings item. This section identifies and explains in detail the available settings and options.
Most settings can be accessed using either of two methods. The first method is to use the Settings Main Menu item as described below. The second method is to select the appropriate menu item from the dropdown list of options in the upper right corner of most pages. The dropdown list items vary by context, although some of the generic options are available on every page. The dropdown list functionality is implemented to allow quick access to the commonly used options without having to go through the main Settings menu item. In all cases, the two methods control the same set of options.
The following discussion will focus on the options presented when the Settings menu item is tapped, and the SETTINGS page appears.
The SETTINGS page is organized into the following subsections.
• General Options
• Media Sharing Options
• Audio Options
• Image Options
• Video Options
• Map Options
• Restore Expert Mode Settings
• Restore Factory Defaults
Each one of these subsections and the corresponding options are discussed in detail below.
The General Options
Tapping the General Options section header opens the corresponding page displaying the current state of the following settings.
• Enable Tutorial Quick Tips
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the Tutorial Quick Tips are displayed automatically whenever the user switches to a page that supports quick tips. Quick tips are intended to give the user a short synopsis of the corresponding page and the available options and actions. The default value of this option is DISABLED. You can temporarily hide individual quick tips screens using the designated check boxes until the application is restarted. Disabling this option in SETTINGS will hide all Quick Tips indefinitely. Individual quick tips, when available, can be displayed at any time by tapping the corresponding page's title text.
• Keep Display Always On
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the device's display remains on and does not time out following user inactivity. This setting is useful when viewing slowly updating location data, and not interacting with the device in any other way. If this setting is not enabled, the device will time out after some period of user inactivity. When that occurs, the display will first dim and then turn off completely. If this setting is enabled, the device will dim the display, but will not turn it off completely. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Suppress Notification Sounds
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the incoming notifications produce a sound. If this setting is enabled, the device will not play notification sounds when new notifications arrive. When this setting is disabled, the device will play sounds normally. The default setting of this option is DISABLED.
• Allow Marketing Contact
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the user permits occasional contact from Intelligent Designs LLC -- developer of the Bodyguard Application -- for promotional or other marketing purposes. The user's contact information is never shared with anyone or any organization, outside Intelligent Designs LLC, for marketing or any other commercial purpose. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Let Others Share Your Location
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the user allows other members of the user's security alliance share any of the user's location points published to the network. This feature can be useful when an Alliance Member in distress needs help without delay. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Use Large Font
This is a toggle switch setting that controls the size of text in some widgets and dialog boxes. There are only two options -- normal and large. The default value of this option is DISABLED, which corresponds to the normal text size setting.
• Delay Security Buttons Activation
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether an additional delay is used when activating or deactivating any of the Security Buttons -- the SECURITY, the EMERGENCY, and the LOCK buttons. This delay helps prevent accidental activation and deactivation of these buttons. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Button Style
This is a pick-list type setting that allows selection of desired corner radius of the main application buttons. The choices range from completely square corners to three settings of rounded corners. The default value is Maximum rounded corners.
• Display Recording Privacy Warning
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the user is warned of privacy implications related to video recording others for the purposes of personal security. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Enable Media Button Notices
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the manual media, location, and data sharing control buttons, described in detail in the Basic Operations Help section, provide alert notifications when tapped, or long pressed. When enabled, these notices take the form of a pop-up dialog describing the actions taken after the user confirms execution of the described action. The user is typically presented two options -- to confirm, or to cancel the described action. If disabled, tapping any of the corresponding buttons immediately executes the assigned action, without any warning or request for a confirmation. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Enable Security Button Notices
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the LOCK, EMERGENCY, and SECURITY buttons, described in detail in the Basic Operations Help section, provide alert notifications when tapped. When enabled, these notices take the form of a pop-up dialog describing the action that would be taken should the user long press the corresponding button to initiate execution of the assigned function. These messages do not require confirmation because their purpose is only to inform. If disabled, tapping any of the corresponding buttons acts in the same way as long pressing these buttons. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Enable Security Button Warnings
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the LOCK, EMERGENCY, and SECURITY buttons, described in detail in the Basic Operations Help section, provide warnings and request confirmations when long pressed. When enabled, these warnings take the form of a pop-up dialog describing the actions taken after the user confirms execution of the described action. The user is presented two options -- to confirm, or to cancel the described action. If disabled, long pressing any of the corresponding buttons immediately executes the assigned action, without any warning or request for a confirmation. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
SPECIAL NOTE:
If both -- the Enable Security Button Notices and the Enable Security Button Warnings -- settings are in their disabled state, then the LOCK, EMERGENCY, and SECURITY buttons operate as described below.
To activate the function assigned to any of these buttons the user must press and hold the button, and then drag their finger across the button until it activates. Once the user presses down on the button, its text changes to "ACTIVATING," it begins to flash, and its size shrinks to a fraction of its original size. As the user continues to drag their finger across the face of the button in any direction, the size of the button grows. If the user's finger crosses beyond the original boundary of the button, the activation action is canceled. When the size of the "ACTIVATING" button reaches the original size of the button, the button's text changes to "ACTIVATED." Once the button is released the text changes again to "ACTIVE" and the corresponding function activates.
A similar procedure is required to deactivate a function previously activated. In that case, the button text changes from "ACTIVE" to "DEACTIVATING," then to "DEACTIVATED," and finally to the original text of the button -- LOCK, EMERGENCY, or SECURITY. All active security level processes become inactive once the button is released. In other words, any and all emergency procedures can be canceled by deactivating any button which is in the "ACTIVE" state.
These procedures ensure that accidental activation or deactivation of any of the security features of the Bodyguard Application is an exceedingly rare event.
• Silence Notifications
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the user receives chat messages and alerts from other users within their Personal Security Network. Enabling this setting prevents reception of chat messages from other users, as well as their assistance requests, and emergency alerts. The default value of this option is DISABLED. This option is automatically disabled when the user activates any of the security measures themselves or attempts to contact another user using the chat feature.
• Silence Expired Location Data Alerts
This is a toggle switch setting that allows the user to suppress notifications offering to postpone deletion of expired location data. Please refer to the Quotas Help section for the discussion of automatic deletion of expired location data, and the associated grace period that this setting affects. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Silence Expired Media Data Alerts
This is a toggle switch setting that allows the user to suppress notifications offering to postpone deletion of expired media data. Please refer to the Quotas Help section for the discussion of automatic deletion of expired media data, and the associated grace period that this setting affects. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Use Speakerphone in Emergencies
This is a toggle switch setting that allows the user to choose whether in an emergency situation, after activating the EMERGENCY button, an automatically placed call to an emergency contact, or an emergency service, uses the device's speakerphone function, or not. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Authorize Security Data Release
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the user permits release of pertinent user location and security media data to an investigating authority, or first responder service officials. Such release of information may be helpful in cases of emergencies, such as a missing person case, or another similar emergency scenario. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Use Emergency Service Number
This is a toggle switch setting that allows the user to choose whether to use an Emergency Contact Number, or an Emergency Service Number during an emergency situation. Enabling this setting replaces the default Emergency Contact Number setting with the Emergency Service Number setting, both of which are discussed below. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Emergency Contact Number
This is a numerical setting that specifies which emergency phone number to dial out, in case of an emergency. Tapping the Emergency Contact Number text opens a numeric entry dialog box. The user is free to choose any number for this field. If this field is not empty, the Bodyguard Application will attempt to dial out the corresponding number after the user activates the emergency state by using the EMERGENCY button described in the Basic Operations Help section. The default value of this setting is "Not set."
• Emergency Service Number
This is a numerical setting that specifies which emergency phone number to dial out, in case of an emergency. Tapping the Emergency Service Number text opens a dialog box pre-populated with all the available Emergency Service Numbers for the locale. The user can choose any number from this dialog, or "None." If this field is not empty, the Bodyguard Application will attempt to dial out the corresponding number after the user activates the emergency state by using the EMERGENCY button described in the Basic Operations Help section. The default value of this setting is "Not set."
The Media Sharing Options
The Media Sharing Options specify how, and which security media is collected and shared while in the SECURITY, EMERGENCY, and the LOCK modes, as well as during the manual stand-alone execution of the Share function. Please refer to the Basic Operations Help section for detailed discussion of the available data collection modes.
Tapping the Media Sharing Options section header opens a page displaying the current state of the following settings.
• Share Audio
This is a toggle switch setting that allows the user to choose whether to record and share audio data when an automatic data collection mode is active. The rules of precedence apply to this setting. They are discussed a bit later in this subsection. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Share Photo
This is a toggle switch setting that allows the user to choose whether to take photo snapshots and share still image data when an automatic data collection mode is active. The rules of precedence apply to this setting. They are discussed a bit later in this subsection. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Share Video
This is a toggle switch setting that allows the user to choose whether to make video recordings and share video data when an automatic data collection mode is active. The rules of precedence apply to this setting. They are discussed a bit later in this subsection. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Location Based
This is a toggle switch setting that determines which of the two automatic location and security media collection modes is active when the user initiates them. When this setting is enabled, the Smart GPS mode is selected as the automatic data collection mode. Changing this setting to disabled, selects the Periodic GPS data collection mode. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Private Media
This is a toggle switch setting that determines where the collected security media is stored. There are two options. The media can be either shared through the cloud, or it can be stored locally and shared manually. When this setting is enabled, the security media is stored locally. The default value of this option is DISABLED. This option is automatically enabled for the Basic Tier -- Tier III.
All four of these settings can also be controlled directly using the manual media and location control buttons as described in the Basic Operations Help section. There you can also find a discussion of the precedence rules governing automatic media data collection.
To recap, the precedence rules are as follows:
• Video overrides everything else
• Photo overrides Audio, but
• Audio and Photo can be shared concurrently
The Audio Options
As the name suggests this settings section is dedicated to the options pertinent to the audio subsystem. All of the options in this group are in the "advanced" category and are available for modification only by those users who have selected the Unlimited Tier -- Tier I or have access to the Unlimited Usage Model supported by the Sponsored Tier -- Tier IV. The primary function of these options is to control the quality of audio recordings created by the system. Extensive testing is recommended following modification of these options, as not all devices may support the selected values. Sometimes, even if your device supports a particular setting, a device used by another member of your Personal Security Network may not support the same setting. Please test the entire system end-to-end.
Regardless of which subscription tier you belong to, you can always view the current audio control settings used by the audio subsystem.
The audio settings described in this subsection have been optimized to provide a consistent user experience regardless of the user's device capabilities.
Tapping the Audio Options section header opens the Audio Options page displaying the current state of the following settings.
• Enable Manual Controls
This is a toggle switch setting that allows modification of all of the remaining settings described in this subsection. When this setting is grayed out, the user is not able to modify any of the settings. The value of this setting is determined by the user's subscription tier as discussed earlier.
• Audio File Format
This setting allows modification of the default audio file format. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box presenting all known audio file formats supported by Android. Not every Android device supports every audio file format listed in the dialog. Therefore, caution is recommended when changing to another audio file format. After changing audio file formats, please test the audio recording subsystem to ensure correct operation by creating a test audio recording using the Audio Library's recording tools. Refer to the Media Help section for information regarding operations of the Audio Library and the available tools. It is also worth pointing out that changing to another audio file format may make your audio files unusable by a fellow associate of your Personal Security Network, if their device does not support the chosen format. It is for this reason, that changing of the audio file format from its default value is not recommended. The default value of this option is THREE_GPP, which is the audio file format supported by all device manufacturers. Because this setting does not add much to the overall quality of the audio experience, it is generally not recommended to modify this setting.
• Audio Codec Type
This setting allows modification of the default audio codec type. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box presenting all available audio codec types supported by your device. Not every Android device supports every audio codec type listed in the dialog. Therefore, caution is recommended when changing to another audio codec type. After changing audio codec type, please test the audio recording subsystem to ensure correct operation by creating a test audio recording using the Audio Library's recording tools. Refer to the Media Help section for information regarding operations of the Audio Library and the available tools. It is also worth pointing out that changing to another audio codec type may make your audio files unusable by a fellow associate of your Personal Security Network, if their device does not support the chosen codec. It is for this reason, that changing of the audio codec type from its default value is generally not recommended. The default value of this option is chosen by your device manufacturer from a list of required codecs, but may vary from one manufacturer to another. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve audio quality, or to reduce the amount of audio data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Extensive testing is recommended.
• Audio Codec Input Channel Count
This setting allows modification of the default number of audio codec input channels and is determined by the selected audio codec type. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box presenting all available selections related to the number of audio codec input channels supported by the selected codec. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve audio quality, or to reduce the amount of audio data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Generally, increasing the number of input channels improves audio quality at the cost of audio file size. Some testing is recommended after adjusting this setting.
• Audio Codec Bitrate
This setting allows modification of the default audio codec bitrate and is determined by the selected audio codec type. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box displaying the valid range of available audio codec bit rates supported by the selected codec, and the current value of this setting. The default value was chosen by your device manufacturer to provide a balance between audio quality and the resultant file size. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve audio quality, or to reduce the amount of audio data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Generally, increasing the bitrate improves audio quality at the cost of audio file size. Some testing is recommended after adjusting this setting.
• Audio Codec Sample Rate
This setting allows modification of the default audio codec sample rate and is determined by the selected audio codec type. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box displaying a list of available audio codec sample rates supported by the selected codec, and the current value of this setting. The default value was chosen by your device manufacturer to provide a balance between audio quality and the resultant file size. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve audio quality, or to reduce the amount of audio data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Generally, increasing the sample rate improves audio quality at the cost of audio file size. Some testing is recommended after adjusting this setting.
The Image Options
This section contains all of the options available to control still image creation and display. Some of the options in this section also apply to video media. Some of the options in this group are in the "advanced" category and are available for modification only by those users who have selected the Unlimited Tier -- Tier I or have access to the Unlimited Usage Model supported by the Sponsored Tier -- Tier IV. The primary function of these options is to control the quality of still image snapshots created by the system. Extensive testing is recommended following modification of these options, as not all devices may support the selected values. In some cases, even if your device supports a particular setting, a device used by another member of your Personal Security Network may not support it. Please test the entire system end-to-end.
Tapping the Image Options section header opens the Image Options page displaying the current state of the following settings.
• Media Aspect Ratio
This setting allows selection of the preferred media aspect ratio when the system automatically chooses the best size of visual media for recording purposes. This setting applies to both -- still images and video recordings -- the same setting is shared between the two. Tapping the text of this setting opens a media aspect ratio selection dialog, that displays the available options. The default value of this option is "Any Aspect Ratio," which disregards aspect ratio when searching for the best available image or video size. Every user device supports a certain number of image and video sizes in hardware. These sizes are completely independent and are chosen arbitrarily by each device manufacturer. These sizes come in a variety of image aspect ratios, which specify the relationship between the width and the height of the image, or a video recording. The Bodyguard Application allows the user to choose from a small list of popular aspect ratios a preferred setting. When set to a value other than the default setting, the automatic search for a suitable image or video size is biased by the value of this option.
• Zoom Magnification
The Bodyguard Application's image and video preview widget allows zooming in on an image at ten times (10X) the normal resolution. That is the nominal zoom resolution supported by the Application. The Zoom Magnification setting can be used to extend the nominal zoom by a factor ranging from two (2X) to a factor of ten (10X) for a combined zoom level between 10X and 100X nominal magnification. This setting determines the initial value of the zoom tool rendered, while previewing an image or a video clip. That initial zoom setting can be temporarily increased while previewing the media, but that temporarily setting does not change the value of this field once the preview session is done. This setting applies to both -- still images and video recordings -- the same setting is shared between the two.
• Media Preview Type
This setting allows selection of the preferred still image and video recording initial preview type. This setting is discussed extensively in the Media Help section, under the Image Library Page subsection. This setting controls the PHOTO PREVIEW and the VIDEO PREVIEW display modes discussed in detail in that help section. The default value of this setting is BEST FIT. This setting applies to both -- still images and video recordings -- the same setting is shared between the two.
• Image File Format Type
This setting allows modification of the default image file format. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box presenting all known image file formats supported by Android. Not every Android device supports every image file format listed in the dialog. Therefore, caution is recommended when changing to another image file format. After changing image file format, please test the image recording subsystem to ensure correct operation by creating a test image using the Image Library's photo snapshot tools. Refer to the Media Help section for information regarding operations of the Image Library and the available tools. It is also worth pointing out that changing to another image file format may make your image files unusable by a fellow associate of your Personal Security Network, if their device does not support the chosen format. It is for this reason, that changing of the image file format from its default value is not recommended. The default value of this option is JPEG, which is the image file format supported by all device manufacturers. Because this setting does not add much to the overall quality of the image experience, it is generally not recommended to modify this setting.
• Camera Number
This setting allows the user to select the camera to be used when photo snapshots are collected on devices that support multiple cameras. This setting is useful when you want to select the front-facing camera, for example, as the Bodyguard's main camera for taking still images. This setting is independent of the Camera Number setting used by the video subsystem (see below). Tapping the text of the setting opens up a pop-up dialog presenting a selection of all available cameras on the device suitable for taking photo snapshots.
• Enable Manual Controls
This is a toggle switch setting that allows modification of all of the remaining settings described in this subsection. When this setting is grayed out, the user is not able to modify any of the settings below it. The value of this setting is determined by the user's subscription tier as discussed earlier. Manual controls described below are available only to those users who have selected the Unlimited Tier -- Tier I or have access to the Unlimited Usage Model supported by the Sponsored Tier -- Tier IV.
• Available Photo Formats
This setting allows modification of the default photo encoding format. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box presenting all known image encoding formats supported by this particular device. Not every Android device supports every image encoding format listed in the dialog. Therefore, caution is recommended when changing to another image encoding format. After changing the format, please test the image recording subsystem to ensure correct operation by creating a test image using the Image Library tools. Refer to the Media Help section for information regarding operations of the Image Library and the available tools. It is also worth pointing out that changing to another image encoding format may make your photo files unusable by a fellow associate of your Personal Security Network, if their device does not support this particular encoding format. It is for this reason, that changing of the image encoding format from its default value is not recommended. The default value of this option is JPEG, which is the encoding format supported by all device manufacturers. Because this setting does not add much to the overall quality of the photo experience, it is generally not recommended to modify this setting.
• Available Photo Sizes
This setting allows the user to replace the default image size, automatically selected by the system for use by the still image media collection subsystem, with another choice supported by their device's hardware. Tapping the text of this option opens up a pop-up dialog pre-populated with a listing of all available photo sizes supported by the hardware of this particular device. The size of each image recorded and stored in the cloud during automatic media collection sessions can have a noticeable impact on the costs associated with usage of the Bodyguard Application. It is therefore, suggested that the user carefully consider these implications when choosing a preferred image size.
The Video Options
This section contains all of the options available to control video recording and display. Some of the options in this section also apply to the still image media. Some of the options in this group are in the "advanced" category and are available for modification only by those users who have selected the Unlimited Tier -- Tier I or have access to the Unlimited Usage Model supported by the Sponsored Tier -- Tier IV. The primary function of these options is to control the quality of video recordings created by the system. Extensive testing is recommended following modification of these options, as not all devices may support the selected values. In some cases, even if your device supports a particular setting, a device used by another member of your Personal Security Network may not support it. Please test the entire system end-to-end.
Tapping the Video Options section header opens the Video Options page displaying the current state of the following settings.
This setting controls the PHOTO PREVIEW and the VIDEO PREVIEW display mode discussed in detail in that help section. The default value of this setting is BEST FIT. This setting applies to both -- still images and video recordings -- the same setting is shared between the two.
• Video Preview
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether video clips are played back using the built-in VIDEO PREVIEW tool when accessed from the Video Library. Refer to the Media Help section for a discussion of the Video Library. When this setting is disabled, only the audio portion of the recorded video clip is played back. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Camera Preview
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether a camera preview is available on the device's display when the user taps the video button while reviewing the list of available clips in the Video Library. When this setting is enabled, a CAMERA PREVIEW page appears on the display, and the user is able to control the camera using the built-in controls. Otherwise, when this setting is disabled, the camera begins automatic video capture as soon as the video button is tapped, without further user interaction. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Show Zoom Slider
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the zoom slider and the zoom multiplier widget, which controls the Zoom Magnification setting (see above), are visible when previewing either a still image, or a video clip. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Pause On Zoom
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether the video clip automatically pauses anytime the zoom slider is tapped. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Constrained Image View
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether a photo image, or a video clip image being previewed is constrained within the margins of the display while resized, or panned. When this setting is disabled, it is possible to center a corner of an image on the display, using the pan and zoom functions. The default value of this option is DISABLED. This setting applies to both -- still images and video recordings -- the same setting is shared between the two.
• Camera Number
This setting allows the user to select the camera to be used when video clips are collected on devices that support multiple cameras. This setting is useful when you want to select the front-facing camera, for example, as the Bodyguard's main camera for taking video clips. This setting is independent of the Camera Number setting used by the still images subsystem (see above). Tapping the text of the setting opens up a pop-up dialog presenting a selection of all available cameras on the device suitable for making video recordings.
• Video Quality Profiles
This setting is visible only to users who have selected the Unlimited Tier -- Tier I, or have access to the Unlimited Usage Model supported by the Sponsored Tier -- Tier IV. This setting is visible only when the Enable Manual Controls setting (see below) is DISABLED. This setting allows quick adjustment of a variety of video parameters based on the desired quality of video recordings. Tapping the text of this setting opens a pop-up dialog presenting the available quality profiles. The profiles are categorized as Standard Quality, High Quality, and Best Quality. The Bodyguard Application automatically selects the underlying parameters for each quality profile based on the device's hardware capabilities. It is possible to review the automatically selected parameters by switching on the Enable Manual Controls setting discussed below.
• Available Video Profiles
This setting is visible only to users who have selected the Unlimited Tier -- Tier I, or have access to the Unlimited Usage Model supported by the Sponsored Tier -- Tier IV. This setting is visible only when the Enable Manual Controls setting (see below) is DISABLED. This setting allows quick adjustment of a variety of video parameters based on the desired size of video recordings. Tapping the text of this setting opens a pop-up dialog presenting the available video profiles. These profiles have been defined for your device by the device manufacturer. It is possible to review the automatically selected parameters by switching on the Enable Manual Controls setting discussed below. Modifying this setting may adjust the Video Quality Profile setting discussed above.
• Enable Manual Controls
This is a toggle switch setting that allows modification of all of the remaining settings described in this subsection. When this setting is grayed out, the user is not able to modify any of the settings below it. The value of this setting is determined by the user's subscription tier as discussed earlier. Manual controls described below are available only to those users who have selected the Unlimited Tier -- Tier I, or have access to the Unlimited Usage Model supported by the Sponsored Tier -- Tier IV.
• Video File Format
This setting allows modification of the default video file format. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box presenting all known video file formats supported by Android. Not every Android device supports every video file format listed in the dialog. Therefore, caution is recommended when changing to another video file format. After changing video file formats please test the video recording subsystem to ensure correct operation by creating a test video recording using the Video Library's recording tools. Refer to the Media Help section for information regarding operations of the Video Library and the available tools. It is also worth pointing out that changing to another video file format may make your video files unusable by a fellow associate of your Personal Security Network, if their device does not support the chosen format. It is for this reason, that changing of the video file format from its default value is not recommended. The default value of this option is THREE_GPP, which is the video file format supported by all device manufacturers. Because this setting does not add much to the overall quality of the video experience, it is generally not recommended to modify this setting.
• Video Codec Type
This setting allows modification of the default video codec type. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box presenting all available video codec types supported by your device. Not every Android device supports every video codec type listed in the dialog. Therefore, caution is recommended when changing to another video codec type. After changing video codec type please test the video recording subsystem to ensure correct operation by creating a test video recording using the Video Library's recording tools. Refer to the Media Help section for information regarding operations of the Video Library and the available tools. It is also worth pointing out that changing to another video codec type may make your video files unusable by a fellow associate of your Personal Security Network, if their device does not support the chosen codec. It is for this reason, that changing of the video codec type from its default value is generally not recommended. The default value of this option is chosen by your device manufacturer and is required to be supported by all devices, but may vary from one manufacturer to another. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve video quality, or to reduce the amount of video data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Extensive testing is recommended.
• Video Codec Bitrate
This setting allows modification of the default video codec bitrate and is determined by the selected video codec type. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box displaying the valid range of available video codec bit rates supported by the selected codec, and the current value of this setting. The default value of this option varies by device manufacturer. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve video quality, or to reduce the amount of video data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Generally, increasing the bitrate improves video quality at the cost of video file size. Some testing is recommended after adjusting this setting. Caution, adjusting this value may dramatically affect the size of generated video files.
• Video Codec Frame Rate
This setting allows modification of the default video codec frame rate and is determined by the selected video codec type and the hardware capabilities of your device. Tapping on the text of this setting opens a dialog box displaying the valid range of available video codec frame rates supported by the selected codec and your device's hardware, and the current value of this setting. The default value of this option is device-specific. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve video quality, or to reduce the amount of video data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Generally, increasing the frame rate improves video quality at the cost of video file size. Some testing is recommended after adjusting this setting. Caution, adjusting this value may dramatically affect the size of generated video files.
• Video Frame Width
This setting allows the user to select an arbitrary video image frame width within a valid range supported by the selected video codec, but not necessarily by the device's hardware. Tapping the text of this option opens up a pop-up dialog pre-populated with a range of supported video frame widths. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve video quality, or to reduce the amount of video data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Extensive testing is recommended after adjusting this setting. Caution, adjusting this value can dramatically affect the size of generated video files.
• Video Frame Height
This setting allows the user to select an arbitrary video image frame height within a valid range supported by the selected video codec, but not necessarily by the device's hardware. Tapping the text of this option opens up a pop-up dialog pre-populated with a range of supported video frame heights. You may want to experiment adjusting this setting either to improve video quality, or to reduce the amount of video data generated by the Bodyguard Application, if that becomes a concern. Extensive testing is recommended after adjusting this setting. Caution, adjusting this value can dramatically affect the size of generated video files.
The Map Options
Tapping the Map Options section header opens the corresponding page displaying the current state of the following settings.
• Media Filter Type
This setting allows selection of a Media Filter to assist with narrowing down which media is visible on a map when reviewing location data of another member of your Personal Security Network. Tapping the text of the setting pops up a dialog box displaying the available options. This filter is described in detail in the Location Help section. Please refer back to that section for full details.
• Map Type
This setting allows selection of the type of the map displayed when reviewing location data. Tapping the text of the setting pops up a dialog box displaying the available options. This setting is described in detail in the Location Help section. Please refer back to that section for full details.
• Animated Maps
This is a toggle switch setting that controls how maps are rendered on the device's screen. When this setting is enabled, transitions from one location on a map to another are animated and appear smooth. When this setting is disabled, the transitions are instantaneous. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Live Tracking
This is a toggle switch setting that controls how the current location tracked on a map is treated. When enabled, the current location of whoever is being tracked is identified with a blue pulsating circle which remains centered on the map. Thus, when the location changes the map appears to shift beneath the current location being displayed. The default value of this option is ENABLED. This setting can also be controlled in real-time while viewing a map. Please refer to the Location Help section for a more detailed discussion.
• Always Show Map Pins
This is a toggle switch setting that controls how and when location map pins are displayed on a map. Location map pins are used to pin-point the precise position of a location point. They may also be used to identify whether and which media data is available for a particular location point. And they provide a means of accessing the details of the corresponding location point, and the associated media, when available. When this setting is enabled, the map pins are displayed in almost all situations. Specifically, the map pins are shown in the "Live Tracking Mode," and the "Detailed View Mode." The map pins are always hidden in the "Blank Map Mode." Conversely, when this setting is disabled, the map pins are shown only in the "Detailed View Mode." The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Location Trace
This is a toggle switch setting that controls whether a location trace path is displayed on a map when reviewing location data. The location trace is displayed as a dashed line connecting consecutive location points. The last location point, chronologically, is identified with an arrowhead. If location trace is enabled, then tapping on the trace itself temporarily hides it in order to help unclutter the map. The trace remains hidden until either the map is refreshed in the "Live Tracking Mode," or the Map Display Mode is changed, or the trace is tapped again to restore it. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Dynamic Zoom
This is a toggle switch setting that selects whether the Dynamic Zoom feature is active while in the "Live Tracking Mode." When enabled, the Dynamic Zoom automatically selects a map zoom level based on the calculated speed of the target in the "Live Tracking Mode." Please refer to the Location Help section for more details. The Dynamic Zoom option can be temporarily disabled by manually selecting a zoom level while viewing a map. The default value of this option is ENABLED.
• Fast Playback
This is a toggle switch setting that controls how fast location point playback occurs in the "Detailed View Mode". Please see the Location Help section for a full discussion of the Detailed View Mode. When enabled, the speed of the playback is set to one second between location updates. When disabled, the pause between location updates is increased to three seconds. The default value of this option is DISABLED. While location playback is active, tapping anywhere on the map toggles this setting.
• Show Traffic
This is a toggle switch setting that selects whether the map pages display traffic information when rendered. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Show Buildings
This is a toggle switch setting that selects whether the map pages display three dimensional representations of buildings when rendered. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
• Indoor Location
This is a toggle switch setting that selects whether the map pages display indoor locations, if available, when rendered. The default value of this option is DISABLED.
