Basic Security Features
Step-by-step instructions describing the basic security features provided by Bodyguard.
Follow the instructions and the suggested actions highlighted in yellow.
Once you have your Personal Security Network configured, you can easily use the basic security features of Bodyguard.
Starting from the HOME PAGE, tap the Security Shield button in the lower right corner to switch to the SECURITY MEASURES page.
The SECURITY MEASURES page has an equivalent Home button that can be used to switch back to the HOME PAGE.
These two buttons provide a convenient way to switch back-and-forth between these two main pages.
You will notice that the two pages have a similar layout.
Each page has a feature in the center that is surrounded by a set of colored buttons.
The HOME PAGE, in its center, features the list of active Virtual Defenders, while the SECURITY MEASURES page features a set of three large buttons.
We will discuss the three large buttons in the middle in a minute, but first let's look at the surrounding buttons.
The three buttons on the top row have dual functionality. First, they allow you to select which multimedia to share with your Virtual Defenders, and second, they allow you to manually activate and deactivate the corresponding media function without sharing the associated multimedia.
The first function is activated by tapping the button. The second function is activated by pressing and holding the button.
Each button also indicates the current status of the sharing function.
For example, tap the first button, as shown, which controls the video function.
Whenever you touch any of the multimedia buttons, a privacy notice pops up to help remind you that you should be mindful of privacy concerns of other individuals that may be around you while you are using Bodyguard's recording functionality for your personal security.
Please read the notice to understand the concepts presented and optionally check the Don't show again checkbox, if you don't need to see this reminder in the future.
Tap the OK text to proceed to the next step as shown in the screenshot.
The next notice explains how the associated button operates and what to expect next. It also allows you to cancel the operation.
Again, if you don't want to see these notices in the future, check the Don't show again checkbox.
A checkbox on any such notice applies to all multimedia and location control buttons.
You can reverse this action by choosing the appropriate option in the General Options section.
Tap the OK text to proceed to the next step as shown in the screenshot.
In our example, please notice that the text of the purple video button has changed to indicate that video capture has been enabled by the previous action.
Also, please notice that the text of the sharing button on the bottom left has also changed from SHARE LOCATION to SHARE VIDEO, indicating that along with location data, video data will also be shared when sharing is activated.
Similar steps apply to the audio control button and the photo control button.
Tapping each button again reverses the previous action.
Next, let's look at the GPS control button in the lower row, next to the sharing button mentioned before.
This button also has dual function.
Tapping this button modifies the preferred method of location data collection, selecting either the SMART GPS or the PERIODIC GPS mode.
Pressing and holding this button initiates location data collection together with whatever multimedia data was selected using the three top buttons discussed earlier.
Tap the location mode button as shown in the screenshot.
This notice will pop up only if you did not select the Don't show again checkbox on the previous notice pop-up. Otherwise, you can skip directly to the next step because that is the screen you will see next.
This notice informs you that a change in location gathering mode will occur if you tap the OK text. You also have the option of canceling that action.
Please notice that in our example, the text of the location button has now changed to PERIODIC GPS to indicate the new location gathering mode.
The GPS mode is an important parameter. It dictates the rate of multimedia capture, which is tied to the location data acquisition function.
The periodic mode simply collects data at regular intervals, while the smart mode attempts to filter out redundant data.
You should experiment with these modes to choose the one that works best for your circumstances.
Next, let's discuss the three large buttons in the center of the SECURITY MEASURES page.
These buttons allow you to quickly and easily communicate with your chosen Virtual Defenders in three key situations.
Routine security monitoring: there is no clear and present danger. For example, you are out for a walk, but you wish someone from your circle of friends is ready in case you need help.
You are under attack, and you wish to inform your friends.
You wish to lock your phone, so that the attacker is not able to cancel your call for help.
Tap the SECURITY button as shown.
Operation of the three large security measures buttons is designed to prevent accidental activation.
Therefore, these buttons activate when pressed and held down. When you merely tap a button, an informational notice pops up to explain the button's method of operation.
You can choose not to see this notice again by checking off the Don't show again checkbox. In that case tapping any of the three large security measures buttons will be handled in the same way as pressing and holding the button, which activates the underlying function.
If you press and hold the SECURITY button instead of merely tapping it, you will see a notice describing in detail exactly what will occur should you proceed with the operation.
However, before this function activates, you are given a choice to proceed with the activation, or to cancel the operation.
If you choose to suppress this notice in the future by checking off the Don't show again checkbox, then the underlying operation will be activated immediately without notice.
To cancel the operation, you will need to press and hold down the corresponding button again.
If you are in danger, or you need to declare an emergency for any reason, you can activate the emergency mode by pressing and holding down the EMERGENCY button.
The EMERGENCY button operates in a way similar to the SECURITY button, where a tap of the button pops up an informative message as shown in the screenshot.
Pressing down and holding the EMERGENCY button activates the emergency mode.
Activation of the emergency mode also automatically activates the security mode, if that mode is not already active.
The main goal of the emergency mode is to notify your circle of active Virtual Defenders that you need assistance. Ideally, your friends should already be aware that you have requested a routine monitoring session when you previously activated the routine security mode. Thus, they should already be checking your status.
The device lock mode is a security feature that enables you to quickly lock your device after activating the emergency mode.
Press down and hold the LOCK button to enable this mode.
The main idea behind the lock mode is to prevent someone canceling your call for help without your consent.
To cancel the lock mode, you will need to first unlock your device and then press and hold down any of the three security buttons, which will deactivate any and all security measures.
If you choose to tap the LOCK button, rather than press and hold it, you will be shown a message describing the button's operation just as with the other three security measures buttons.
The message will describe in detail what happens when you activate the lock mode. Please see the screenshot.
After you successfully activate any of the modes described above, the button corresponding to that mode will begin to blink indicating that the corresponding mode is active.
To deactivate any and all active security measures mode(s) you can press down and hold any of the blinking buttons.
The informational messages described above can also be enabled and disabled using the General Options menu items.
To get to the General Options menu items tap on the ellipsis symbol in the top right corner of the screen as shown in the screenshot.
Then tap the General Options menu item to open the pop-up dialog.
This dialog lists all the available General Options.
The two highlighted options shown in the screenshot control whether the information messages appear when you tap or press down and hold the security measures buttons.
If you disable both of these options, then the buttons will operate in a different manner.
Please watch the video for the demonstration of the alternate operation of any of the security measures buttons.
To activate or deactivate a button in this regime touch anywhere on the button's face, then drag your finger across the face of the button making sure that your finger stays inside the button's boundaries.
In response, the size of the button will grow. The assigned function will activate as soon as the button grows to its original size.
Moving your finger off the face of the button will cancel the activation, just as lifting your finger off will.
