Union Center Colored School

Union Center Colored School After It Closed

The Union Center Colored School was the former Cochran School building.  It was remodeled and turned into a very attractive building at the time.  There were 113 students in Union Center.   Mrs. Elthenia Teal was the principal.  There were five other teachers on the staff that taught grades 1 through 8.  After eighth grade, the students attended Austin County Negro High School in Sealy.

After integration, Mrs. Teal taught at O’Bryant Elementary until she retired.

HAWKS Football

In 1957 the Austin County Hawks claimed the 'Class A' Title where they defeated Hawkins for the crown.  There was a downtown Sealy parade on Saturday after the game.  This was before integration, and the Hawks were the negro high school team.  They were made up of youngsters from all over Austin County.  The school was located in Sealy, Texas. They played there home games at Tiger Stadium on Saturday nights.
