Nelsonville School
1880-1947
The town of Nelsonville was named in honor of D. D. Nelson. In 1865 he started a mercantile business in the location of Nelsonville. He erected a small frame building with 2 rooms, one of which he used for a dwelling and the other for a store.
Nelsonville was one of the Original 13 School districts created by the Austin county Commissioners Court in Novenber 1884. It contained Nelsonville, Nelsonville Salem, Oak Hill-Oak Hill Wards Chappel, Santa Anna, and Scranton Grove. It had 17,020 acres in its boundaries and 210 students and received $1411.20 in State aid for 6 schools
