The people of this community decided that they wanted a school, so they raised money and donated time to build the school. Mr. Herring donated the land and it was completed in 1896. The school opened for its first term on September 29, 1896 for an 8 month term.
Professor Engelking was the first teacher; his salary was $400.00 per year. There was one subject taught in German until 1917 when World War I began. There were 60 to 65 pupils at that time and one teacher taught them all. There were no buses at that time so students had to walk or ride horses to school. The boys had to haul wood in for the wood stove and water had to be carried in with a dipper for everyone to drink from. It was the girls job to sweep the floor and clean the classroom. Everyone bought their lunch to schools in pails. At recess they played baseball or basketball. They also had competitions with other schools.
Everything changed in 1947 with the passage of the Gilmore Adkins Act. Four schools in the area consolidated. Mr. Hubert Rinn loaded up the school and the teacherage building and moved them up the road about a mile where it became Welcome District #12. After the consolidation, the school had 3 teachers. They even had a bus. The bus was a converted old hearse.
