Test of Early Language Development - Fourth Edition (TELD-4)
Age range: 3:0-7:11
Time: 15-40 minutes
Creators: Wayne P. Hresko, D. Kim Reid, Donald D. Hammill
What does it test? The TELD-4 is a norm-referenced assessment that measures the child’s receptive and expressive language abilities. Two subtests (receptive and expressive) measure abilities related to the child’s same-aged peers.
The Test of Early Language Development - fourth edition (TELD-4) is an assessment that evaluates a child’s oral-language ability. The test includes the manual, picture book, and examiner booklet forms A and B. The TELD-4 has two subtests, receptive and expressive language. Each subtest requires both forms A and B. The receptive subtest measures the children’s understanding of spoken language by pointing to pictures or following simple directions (e.g., “Show me the boy with more balloons”, “stand up, turn around, and sit down”). The expressive subtest measures the child’s verbal output when viewing pictures as well as responding to questions familiar to the child (e.g., “what is your name”, and “who is in your family”). The record booklet is broken down by age, making it easy to follow. Scoring is 1 point for correct and 0 for incorrect, circled in the examiner record booklet.
The TELD-4 is a relatively short assessment, which benefits younger and low-ability children who have trouble withholding attention or sitting still for extended periods of time.
The test follows a picture book but requires identifying and conversations outside of the test book and small movements to engage the child further.
While there are several strengths of the TELD-4, a weakness of this assessment may be the demographics as it was normed on a smaller than expected population (1,074 children representing 32 states and 292 different zip codes).
This test has a small age range it can be used with and many other assessments that also test receptive and expressive language skills have a wider age range. Standardized assessments are expensive and speech and language therapists would prefer to purchase a test that has a wider age range to test.
