The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, 5th Edition (PPVT-5) is a norm-referenced assessment that evaluates the receptive language, specifically receptive vocabulary capabilities, of individuals from 2 years, 6 months old to 90+ years old. The PPVT-5 consists of picture stimulus cards with a field of 4 pictures which the clinician uses alongside prompts that ask the individual to match what they hear to a picture in the stimulus book. The clinician can choose to start the assessment with the training materials at the beginning of the assessment to get the client familiar with the format and layout of the assessment or choose to start the assessment at the age of the individual. The clinician can either score the individual's response as a 1, meaning correct, 0 meaning incorrect, or NR, meaning no response. At the end of the assessment, the clinician will calculate a raw score which can then be transferred into a standard score which they can use to achieve a percentile rank. The clinician can also use the standard score that the individual obtained to chart it onto a normal bell curve distribution as well as a description of how they performed such as below expected, average, and above expected. The PPVT-5 also reports on test-age equivalent scores and growth scale value scores, which are infrequently used when writing up a diagnostic report for a client.
Administration time is short, which is beneficial for younger children and individuals with decreased attention span
Easy to administer and score
Quick to evaluate receptive vocabulary without having to do any reading or writing tasks
Might be too easy or too hard for certain clients depending on their age
Some objects/items younger kids may not have been exposed to and therefore might impact their scores
It does not measure overall cognitive or language ability
It is only available in English
