Diverse Speakers and Language Learners

Children are exposed to many different languages, and their "languaging" and language knowledge are products of their experiences with languages. Here, we share some transcripts and videos of children speaking multiple languages in addition to English.

GERMAN-ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

These videos show a little girl named Leah getting interviewed by her mother. Leah is bilingual and speaks both German and English.

In the video to the left, she is 2 years old. In the video to the right, she is 5 years old.

Hindi - ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

To the left is a video of Hindi children participating in spoken English class.

French-ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

To the left is a video of a mom prompting her French children to speak English. To the right is a video of a mom prompting her 6 year-old French son to speak English!

SPANISH-ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

Here is a video of a three-year-old boy who is bilingual speaking Spanish and English. He lives in Spain with his parents. His father is also bilingual, but most of the people he is surrounded by speak Spanish. He is learning English from his father and media delivered in English.

Mandarin- ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

This is a video of a child from Datong, China whose first language is Mandarin, Chinese, communicating in English.

POLISH-ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

This is a video of a bilingual child from Poland, whose first language is Polish, speaking in English.

Italian-ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

This video is of an Italian child listening and understanding Italian but responding in English!

Russian-ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

To left is a video of a girl whose primary language is Russian. She is describing drawings of each family member in English.

VietNamese-ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

Quang Binh, the Vietnamese child featured in this video is conversing with a tourist family. He is six years old and is speaking English as a second language.

Portuguese (Brazil)--ENGLISH SPEAKING CHILDREN

Alice Seco lives in London with her parents and younger sister. Portuguese is their primary language, however, Alice is bilingual and speaks English as well. In the video to the left, Alice is 2 years old and sings children's songs in English. In the other video, Alice is about 4 years old and plays "restaurant" with her parents.
