Materials:
Water
Oil
Food coloring
Tall clear glass
Another cup or glass
Fork
Instsructions:
Fill the tall glass almost to the top with room-temperature water. Warm water is ok, too.
Pour a little oil into the other glass (1 to 2 tablespoons).
Add a couple of drops of food coloring.
Briefly stir the oil and food coloring mixed with a fork. You want to break up the food coloring drops into smaller drops, but not thoroughly mix the liquid.
Pour the oil and coloring mixture into the tall glass.

Materials:
Baking soda
Paper
Water
Light bulb (heat source)
Paintbrush or swab
Measuring cup
Purple grape juice (optional)
Instructions:
Mix equal parts water and baking soda.
Use a cotton swab, toothpick, or paintbrush to write a message onto white paper, using the baking soda solution as "ink."
Allow the ink to dry.
One way to read the message is to hold the paper up to a heat source, such as a light bulb. You can also heat the paper by ironing it. The baking soda will cause the writing in the paper to turn brown.
Another method is to paint over the paper with purple grape juice. The message will appear in a different color. The grape juice acts as a pH indicator that changes color when it reacts with the sodium bicarbonate of baking soda, which is a base.

Notes
It may take a couple hours so be patient
The water moves up the paper towels through a process called capillary action
The gaps in the paper towel act like capillary tubes and which help pull the water upward
This is what helps water climb from a plant’s roots to the leaves at the top of the plant or tree.
