My code of conduct is built around four core values: Ownership, Professionalism, Communication, and Risk. These values shape the structure of my classroom and guide student expectations. I want students to take ownership of their learning—this includes their behavior, effort, growth, and contributions to a positive classroom environment. The code also emphasizes professionalism and communication, which are essential skills that support students’ development both inside and outside the classroom. I include risk because meaningful learning often requires students to step outside of their comfort zones and try new things.
When students are encouraged to take ownership, it fosters a safer and more respectful classroom culture. They begin to understand that their words and actions reflect who they are, which helps create an environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel comfortable sharing their experiences and perspectives. These values also provide a clear foundation for me as a teacher when holding students accountable.
As an educator, I recognize the importance of holding students to high standards while also holding myself to those same expectations. I must model the professionalism, communication, and accountability I expect from my students. For example, if a student cannot afford an FFA jacket, it is my responsibility to help find solutions—such as connecting them with scholarship opportunities—so every student has access to the same experiences. My goal is to create a classroom community where students feel supported, respected, and challenged to grow, while ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
